Mets bullpen implodes in 6-run eighth for nightmarish loss to Nationals

Just when the 2017 Mets seemed dead and forgotten came a flashback to that team’s not-so-greatest-hits. These Mets can only hope Monday night was a blip and not an omen for a bullpen that is excelling, but has often been stretched to the brink. In a gut punch, the Mets blew a five-run, eighth-inning lead...

Final Score: Nationals 7, Mets 6—Bullpen implosion

Final Score: Nationals 7, Mets 6—Bullpen implosion

Welp. Jacob deGrom was brilliant, but the Mets’ bullpen totally imploded, blowing a five-run lead en route to an 8-6 loss. deGrom went 7.1 innings and departed with two men on base. Seth Lugo, Jerry Blevins, AJ Ramos, Jeurys Familia, and Hansel Robles then combined to face 13 batters and record only five outs. The loss is officially charged to AJ Ramos, who had a truly dismal performance. Todd Frazier provided the early offense for the Mets, driving in runs in the first and the third off of Jeremy Hellickson. Late in the game, the Mets’ aggressive baserunning led to a couple more runs,...

Bryce Harper just hit a home run with a broken bat...

THE RULES DO NOT APPLY. THE RULES DO NOT APPLY. Entering his first at-bat in the bottom of the first inning against the New York Mets tonight, Washington Nationals’ slugger Bryce Harper was probably thinking about how he would deal with New York Mets’ pitcher Jacob deGrom, or maybe about some missed opportunities from the game on Sunday, or perhaps debating if the Vegas Golden Knights would benefit from sweeping the Kings, or if the series going longer would be better for the team. Then, on the first pitch he saw — a 95.8 MPH fastball up and in — Harper found a way to jam himself...

Nationals’ lineup for series opener with the Mets + Davey Martinez on Ryan Zimmerman’s slow start...

Last April, Ryan Zimmerman was tearing the cover off the ball and off to a red-hot start. This season, Zimmerman’s making some solid contact, but he’s started slow. What does Davey Martinez see? After going 0 for 8 with runners in scoring position in Sunday’s loss, Washington’s Nationals have a .210/.335/.364 line with runners in scoring position after 16 games, 13th/10th/10th in the National League. Davey Martinez’s club went 5 for 21 overall in their recently-completed four-game set with the Colorado Rockies over the weekend, dropping 3 of 4 by 5-1, 2-1, and 6-5 scores. Did...

Mets Morning News for April 16, 2018

Your Monday morning dose of New York Mets and MLB news, notes, and links. Meet the Mets It seemed the Sunday curse would once again rear its head when the Mets left a ton of runners on base against Brewers’ starter Jhoulys Chacin. Noah Syndergaard was dominant, but the slim 1-0 lead he left the game with was immediately erased after some sloppy play by the infield. However, the Brewers’ lead didn’t last long once again. Brandon Nimmo tied it up with a solo home run which set the stage for Wilmer Flores to send everyone home happy with a walk-off home run. The Nationals now come to...

Davey Martinez talked after the Nationals’ 6-5 loss to the Rockies about turning things around after a disappointing 3-7 homestand. Washington Nationals’ skipper Davey Martinez was blunt in his assessment of the recently-completed 3-7 homestand, which left the defending NL East champs 7-9 so far this season, 6.0 games out in the division heading into this week’s three-game series with the New York Mets in Citi Field. “We’re going to win games, I know that, we’ve just got to capitalize in big moments. We haven’t done that.” - Davey Martinez “It wasn’t good,” Martinez...
