Kris Benson works out for D-Backs

Nick Piecoro's Dbacks Blog | Arizona Republic — Free-agent right-hander Kris Benson threw a simulated game today in Tucson, facing minor league hitters for five innings. Diamondbacks General Manager Josh Byrnes confirmed that Benson was in camp – his workout was first reported by KTAR – but wouldn’t provide many details about how he threw, including his velocity. That Byrnes wouldn’t say probably means it wasn’t very hard. "He came here to work out and we certainly afforded him the opportunity," Byrnes said. "Every club is always wanting to ensure pitching depth. It’s an evaluation worth do...

Non-roster spotlight: Evan Frey

Nick Piecoro's Dbacks Blog | Arizona Republic — Outfielder Evan Frey’s confidence was sky-high coming out of spring training last season. He hung around big league camp for most of March, drawing praise from coaches and club executives for his tremendous defense and his tough at-bats. And before that, he turned in an impressive fall league campaign, hitting .288 with a .350 on-base and making even the best pitchers -- like Atlanta’s Tommy Hanson -- work to get him out. But from the beginning his 2009 season didn’t go as planned. In Double-A Mobile, he hit.236 in April and just .196 in May, and though he rebounded in the .....

Time running out for Webb

Nick Piecoro's Dbacks Blog | Arizona Republic — Manager A.J. Hinch wouldn’t come out and say it, but it’s becoming more and more clear that right-hander Brandon Webb will start the season on the disabled list. “We are running out of time,” Hinch said. General Manager Josh Byrnes said last week that Webb likely will need to appear in a Cactus League game by this weekend in order to have time to build his innings total to be ready to start the season. “We’re getting to the point where we’re going to need to address that,” Hinch said. “Is it a couple of days away? Probably. We’re goin...
