Arizona Diamondbacks sign Wilmer Flores

Arizona Diamondbacks sign Wilmer Flores

It’s a one-year deal with a club option for the infielder Jeff Passan of ESPN [I’m still having consciously not to type Yahoo!] was the first to report the news, following up on a report by colleague Pedro Gomez. It’s pending physicals, and there’s no word to this point on the price. Flores was non-tendered by the Mets at the end of November: he was in his third year of arbitration eligibility and was probably going to have received a sizeable increase on his $3.4 million salary for 2018 (MLBTR estimated $4.7m). He appeared in 126 games for New York, hitting .267/.319/.417, for a...

Diamondbacks Pitcher of the Year: Nominations

Diamondbacks Pitcher of the Year: Nominations

These five were head and shoulders above everyone. Probably because they were standing on a mound... Clay Buchholz I hope Buchholz doesn’t win, simply because I’ve already had to write two articles about him, and a third would have me leaning heavily on the thesaurus! So, pardon me if I simply repeat what I said about Clay all the way back... on Sunday: “No-one who endured the Lovecraftian sense of creeping dread which was Kris Medlen’s outing, can have any doubts about the saving throw Clay Buchholz provided for Arizona fan sanity this season.” We’d have been delighted had he...

Less than one month left: Where do the Diamondbacks stand?

Less than one month left: Where do the Diamondbacks stand?

It still seems like there’s work to be done, but let’s not panic. There’s no formal date yet for pitchers and catchers reporting to Salt River Fields for the Diamondbacks. But the teams which have announced their schedule are around the February 12-13 point on the calendar, which means there’s probably about four weeks left to go. Arizona still has a number of questions that need to be answered with regard to its Opening Day roster. We’ll be looking at each of these between now and P&C Report day, but it seems a good point to have a quick overview, and see where the team stands....

Diamondbacks Pitcher of the Year: Nominations open

Diamondbacks Pitcher of the Year: Nominations open

At least there’s no-one with an infinite ERA this season! 30 Diamondbacks took the mound this season, though I’m taking an executive decision to exclude Daniel Descalso, Alex Avila and Jeff Mathis from qualifying for this award. We do not want a whole ‘Boaty McBoatface’ situation here, thank you very much. Though I note sadly, all three of the position players to pitch for the D-backs in 2018 had a better ERA than Shelby Miller had over his sixteen innings of work... [And Kris Medlen too, though at least he had the wisdom to retire from the game] And Alex Avila had a better...

Arizona Diamondbacks – Manny Machado’s mystery suitor?

The Arizona Diamondbacks are a team that exists under the radar, so it would be fitting if they were the team secretly involved in the Manny Machado sweepstakes. The Arizona Diamondbacks are in a weird place right now. For most of last season the Diamondbacks were serious contenders for the NL West crown, but after […] Arizona Diamondbacks – Manny Machado’s mystery suitor? - Call to the Pen - Call to the Pen - A Major League Baseball Fan Site - News, Blogs, Opinion and More

Unsung Diamondbacks Hero of the Year: Clay Buchholz

Unsung Diamondbacks Hero of the Year: Clay Buchholz

Party like it’s 2013 I was kinda hoping someone else would win the award, mostly because I already wrote about Buchholz in detail. I toyed with the idea of simply copy-pasting my previous article, and seeing if anyone noticed. After all, this was a pitcher who, when the D-backs got him on May 6, was deemed not even worth an article here reporting on the news. At the time, we we far more concerned about Paul Goldschmidt’s slump. The sole mention of the signing was a secondary note in Snake Bytes during a paragraph about us sending down Kris Medlen. “Mike Hazen also went out and...

Snake Bytes, 1/11: Arbitration day

Why ask for billions, when you can ask for... millions Team news As we discussed last night, today’s the day for teams and arbitration-eligible players to exchange numbers. After the signing of John Ryan Murphy, the D-backs have ten players left in that category. We may well see a whole bunch of further agreements before the deadline, so here’s the full list with service time and MLB Trade Rumours estimates: we’ll update with numbers as appropriate. David Peralta (4.120) – $7.7MM Robbie Ray (4.007) – $6.1MM Taijuan Walker (4.142) – $4.825MM Jake Lamb (4.053) –...

Arizona Diamondbacks avoid arbitration with John Ryan Murphy

Arizona Diamondbacks avoid arbitration with John Ryan Murphy

So that’s nice. The deadline for teams to exchange arbitration figures with the players eligible for the process is tomorrow at 11 am, Arizona time. It doesn’t necessarily mean a great deal: doing so doesn’t commit either side to going through the process, with an agreement capable of being reached up to the very door of the arbitration hearing. However, it appears to be the case of late that teams have adopted what MLB Trade Rumors calls a ‘file and trial” approach: “halting negotiations on one-year contracts once figures have been exchanged and simply going to a hearing at...
