Arizona Republic SAN DIEGO -- So this is what it's like when Paul Goldschmidt doesn't have the offense on his back. For the first time this season, Goldschmidt is in something of a slump. His at-bats haven't looked especially bad and his funk hasn't been too prolonged, but his dropoff has been noticeable for the Diamondbacks.

Arizona Republic SAN DIEGO -- The Diamondbacks can look back on this weekend and lament a belt-high sinker from Trevor Cahill, a misplayed ground ball by shortstop Didi Gregorius and an apparent missed call by the home-plate umpire. While all of those moments contributed to the San Diego Padres' three-game sweep at Petco Park, where Sunday's 4-1 loss represented the coup de grace, the fact was the Diamondbacks' razor-thin margin for error was their own creation, a product of an offense that managed just six runs in three games.

Arizona Republic SAN DIEGO -- After the beanball war that broke out at Dodger Stadium on Tuesday night, Diamondbacks right-hander Ian Kennedy bounced around online, curious about what kind of punishment he could expect from the commissioner's office. "The guys in the past, with their first offense, have gotten around a five-game suspension, five or six," he said. "I don't understand why mine would be any different, why mine would be 10 when some people's second offense was even less."

Arizona Republic Padres 6, Diamondbacks 4 Recap: Left-hander Wade Miley had another shaky outing, and the San Diego Padres beat the Diamondbacks to pull their record to .500 for the first time since April 10, 2011, a span of 383 games. The Padres' Yasmani Grandal hit a three-run home run to cap the Padres' five-run fourth against Miley, and right-hander Jason Marquis pitched into the seventh inning in the win.

Arizona Republic SAN DIEGO -- Diamondbacks hitters have been making more contact this season than they have in previous years, striking out at a lower clip than at any point in the past five years. Their 18.8 percent strikeout rate is the club's lowest since 2007, and while the team hasn't had too much trouble scoring runs, all those extra balls in play have had at least one drawback: The Diamondbacks have grounded into 67 double plays, the most in the majors.

Arizona Republic Padres 2, Diamondbacks 1 Recap: One strike away from getting out of a bases-loaded, nobody-out jam in the sixth inning, Diamondbacks RHP Trevor Cahill made one mistake, and the Padres took advantage. Logan Forsythe's two-run single to center on a high sinker put the Padres ahead for good, and LHP Eric Stults took care of the rest, tossing a complete-game two-hitter to beat the Diamondbacks in the opener of a three-game series at Petco Park.

Kennedy, who grazed Dodgers outfielder Yasiel Puig's face with a pitch in the sixth inning and then drilled pitcher Zack Greinke with another fastball an inning later, received a 10-game suspension.

Arizona Republic LOS ANGELES -- Once Diamondbacks pitcher Ian Kennedy's 92-mph fastball grazed the nose of Los Angeles Dodgers rookie Yasiel Puig Tuesday night at Dodger Stadium, it was not hard to envision what might happen next. Whether it was intentional or not, it wasn't surprising that it drew a response, and in this case, the response erupted into one of the more raucous brawls in Diamondbacks history.
