Stop Shark Finning, Dammit

Sons of Steve Garvey — Just this Son's opinion: I was disappointed to read that Manny Ramirez enjoyed some shark's fin soup while in Taiwan. While shark's fin soup is a traditional Chinese dish and, yes, it is tasty, it's not difficult to give up once you see how it's made. Basically they cut the fins off and throw the rest of the shark back in the ocean. From Stop Shark Finning: Every year tens of millions of sharks die a slow death because of finning. Finning is the inhumane practice of hacking off the shark's fins and throwing its still living body back into the sea. The sharks either starve to death, are ...

Sons of Steve Garvey — Here it is, your bare-bones spring training game thread. I think Aroldis is pitching. UPDATE 11:28a (Sax): Dodgers go with Clayton Kershaw, followed by Monasterios, Broxton, Sherrill, and Ayala. Reds start Bronson Arroyo and also have Chapman somewhere in the mix.

Dodgers Continue To Stick It To Cubs

Sons of Steve Garvey — Two years after summarily dispatching the Chicago Cubs in the 2008 postseason, 3-0 in the NLDS, the Dodgers are still sticking it to the Cubs, who are threatening to leave Arizona if they don't get financial incentives. The Arizona government, oddly enough, is trying to get other Cactus League teams to fund the Cubs' ransom. And the Dodgers, thankfully, have the balls to stick up against this malarkey. First, the Dodgers (along with three other teams) boycotted the kickoff breakfast (hopefully it wasn't a Denny's Grand Slam breakfast): Four teams boycotted the annual Cactus League kickoff b...

Dodgers' Taiwan Delegation Welcomed By Paparazzi, Karaoke Fans, Bookies, Gangsters

Sons of Steve Garvey — The Dodgers have landed! The Dodgers have landed! TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Camera flashbulbs lit up the concourse as the Dodgers deplaned their EVA 777 charter Thursday. From the hundreds of autograph seekers that greeted the team at Taloyuan International Airport to the police escort through rush-hour traffic, to the hundreds who lined the sidewalk in front of The Sherwood Taipei Hotel. From the standing-room-only press conference to the rollicking cocktail reception -- where several players were coaxed into sinagalongs with the band -- there's already a heightened excitement before any of the ...

Spring Training GameThread: March 11 12:05p @ Royals

Sons of Steve Garvey — The Dodgers have one win in five spring training games, which is only ahead of Washington Nationals (0-8). So Surprise (Stadium), and bring on the lowly (4-2) Royals! James McDonald looks to rebound from a shaky start against the White Sox last week, and he faces Gil "Man of La" Meche. Also scheduled to appear for the Dodgers today are Russ Ortiz, Ramon Toncoso, Travis Schlichting and Javy Guerra and lefty Armando Zerpa.

  • Non-roster spotlight: Evan Frey Nick Piecoro's Dbacks Blog | Arizona Republic Outfielder Evan Frey’s confidence was sky-high coming out of spring training last season. He hung around big league camp for most of March, drawing praise from coaches and club executives for his tremendous defense and his tough at-bats. And before that, he turned in an impressive fall league campaign, hitting .288 with a .350 on-base and making even the best pitchers -- like Atlanta’s Tommy Hanson -- work to get him out. But from the beginning his 2009 season didn’t go as planned. In Double-A Mobile, he hit.236 in April and just .196 in May, and though he rebounded in the .....
