Tuesday Twins: Byron Buxton wins Fielding Bible Award

Tuesday Twins: Byron Buxton wins Fielding Bible Award

Yes, that’s a real thing I didn’t just make up. Plus, comparing the 2017 World Series to 1991, defense, and prospects. Happy Halloween! Here’s the links: We all know Byron Buxton plays great defense, but now it’s officially award-winning! No, Buxton didn’t win the Gold Glove yet (though he is a finalist), he won the Fielding Bible Award. No, I’ve never heard of it either, but apparently it’s been around for twelve years? Anyway, congrats, Buck! Nick Nelson, however, wonders if the Twins can add even more to their defensive prowess. Did you SEE Game 5 of the World Series...

Twins lose bench coach Joe Vavra to Tigers

Twins lose bench coach Joe Vavra to Tigers

Ron Gardenhire is getting his band back together in Detroit, apparently. When the Tigers announced last week that they had hired former longtime Twins manager Ron Gardenhire, most Twins fans seemed happy for him. There was also a healthy about of speculation that Gardy would bring in some of the long-time members of his coaching staff in Minnesota, like Scott Ullger. Ullger may still be waiting for a phone call, but Joe Vavra isn’t. News came out today that Vavra will be joining Gardy’s coaching staff in Detroit on a two-year deal—meaning the Twins now need a new bench coach....

If the 2017 Twins were a movie...

If the 2017 Twins were a movie...

What movie would they be? We’ve got a number of suggestions. Movies are great. They make you feel things. They make you think things. They don’t take an entire nine hours to watch like Stranger Things: 2 (which was so strange). Honestly, I’m not sure about how I feel about movies, because I spend most of my time watching baseball. But a bit ago, I asked the Twinkie Town community what movie title or plot best describes the Twins’ 2017 season, and why? I got some magnificent responses, including the following (with links to their explanations as to why): dwintheiser: “The Blair...

Monday Morning Minnesota: Fast balls and slippery balls.

Monday Morning Minnesota: Fast balls and slippery balls.

And other things too that don’t focus on balls as much. I’m taking a break from my regularly scheduled weekend marathon of Sailor Moon to link you guys some fun baseball stuff. I hope you appreciate the strain this lack of magical girls is putting on my psyche right now. In the name of the moon, I will link you stuff! The Twins new pitching coach Garvin Alston is, I am told, a human person who exists. He also likes the fastball. Randball (and not his stu) wonders if the Twins have much hope to win it all in the future in this new era of 100 win superteams. I mostly linked this...

Where can the Twins acquire a good bullpen?

Where can the Twins acquire a good bullpen?

The Twins’ bullpen was one of their biggest weaknesses in 2017, but why? Let’s look at how bullpens are made and figure this out. Obviously, a strong bullpen is a desirable thing to have. In 2017, the Twins did not have a strong bullpen. In an effort to understand why, and how the Twins can improve, lets take inventory of where the Twins relievers came from, and how the teams with the best bullpens acquired their relievers. There are six basic routes a team can acquire a player: free agency, waivers, trades (I’m including the purchasing of a contract in this category), amateur...

Channeling your Joe Mauer Gold Glove snub anger

Channeling your Joe Mauer Gold Glove snub anger

Of course it’s dumb. It doesn’t matter. Be strong. Be brave. The general consensus among local fans and smart baseball folk is that Joe Mauer finally grew into his post-concussion role of first baseman in 2017. This could be confirmed by both “the eye test” (if you watched the Twins even a little this year, you know) and by the maths. Regardless of how many guys with dog avis on Twitter called him a pussy, his journey from replacement-level fielder to defensive asset seemed complete. So much so, in fact, that Gold Glove consideration was expected. So, of course, he didn’t even...

Byron Buxton and Brian Dozier named gold glove finalists

Byron Buxton and Brian Dozier named gold glove finalists

Joe Mauer, however, was snubbed at first base. Rawlings Sports announced the Gold Glove finalists at each position today, a thing they do because the award is technically called the Rawlings Gold Glove. As expected, Byron Buxton was among the three AL center field finalists. Unexpectedly, however, Joe Mauer was not among the AL first base finalists, and Brian Dozier somehow made it into the AL second base finalists? This doesn’t make any sense. I don’t mean to hate on Brian Dozier or anything, but he’s not defensive standout at second base. Of the ten AL second baseman to play at...

Twins hire Garvin Alston as new pitching coach

Welcome to Minnesota! Now, who are you? Well, I didn’t see this one coming! Then again, I’m pretty sure no on did. But it’s true, the Twins have found their new ball-slinging helper man, announcing today that Garvin Alston will replace Neil Allen as the team’s pitching coach next season. The 45-year-old started the 2017 season as the Padres’ pitching rehab coordinator before the Athletics hired him mid-season to serve as their bullpen coach. He’d previously served as a minor league pitching coach in the As system for eleven years, and as the Diamondbacks’ bullpen...

Ten forgettable moments from the 1987 World Series

Ten forgettable moments from the 1987 World Series

The Twins beat the Cardinals in 1987 to win their first world championship, and here’s some crap you probably don’t remember about that. Thirty years ago on this date, the Minnesota Twins became World Series Champions for the first time. There are a lot of memories Twins fans certainly hold dear from the 1987 World Series: Danny Gladden’s grand slam. Kent Hrbek’s grand slam. Don Baylor’s home run. Kirby Puckett’s 4-for-4 game. Winning the whole damn thing, finally. You already remember those things. If you don’t, I’m sure a handful of sites have articles rehashing those...

What to do at DH for the Twins

What to do at DH for the Twins

Going into the 2018 season, there are some obvious holes that the Twins need to fill. Namely, we all know they need better pitching, both in the rotation and in the bullpen. On the offensive side though, there isn’t as much that needs to be done. Jason Castro is locked up for two more years behind the plate. Believe it or not but Joe Mauer’s contract will finally end after this upcoming season, though first base may soon be filled by Miguel Sano. Second base is of course Brian Dozier, and an improved defensive showing in 2017 suggests that Jorge Polanco is still the shortstop for at...

Twins 2017 AFL Week Two: Chris Paul wins Hitting Challenge

Twins 2017 AFL Week Two: Chris Paul wins Hitting Challenge

This is a real thing! I swear! The seven Twins prospects participating in this year’s Arizona Fall League now have two weeks in the books. Their team, the Surprise Saguaros, are 5-6, which isn’t too great, but do we really care what some rando AFL team’s record is? No, we care about the prospects. Let’s take a look at how each of the Twins prospects are doing two weeks in. Chris Paul - 1B/3B When it comes to Twins prospects, Chris Paul has been the talk of the town in week two. That’s because he won the fifth annual Arizona Fall League Hitting Challenge last weekend. If you’re...

Tuesday Twins: What the Twins can learn from the World Series

The World Series starts today, but the Twins aren’t in it. Why is that, and how can we make sure this never happens again? Here are the links: The World Series starts tonight! It’s the first time in 47 years two teams who won over 100 games during the regular season will face one another in the fall classic, so it should be some good baseball. In case you’re living under a rock, the two teams facing one another are the Dodgers and the Astros. The Dodgers are favored to win. But the Astros are still a great team! Cody Christie over at Twins Daily wrote a piece wondering if the Twins...

Monday Morning Minnesota: Roundup Edition

Monday Morning Minnesota: Roundup Edition

Not a lot on the Twins front right now. Since not a lot is going on for the Twins (or any other eliminated team really) right now, and since the Astros beat the Yankees to avoid a Yankees/Dodgers world series which would have caused me to swear off baseball for all eternity, I’ll round up a few tidbits from the last few weeks that you might of missed out on. Or maybe you didn’t. My job is harder during the off-season, I don’t know! This week’s soundtrack is from Bionic Commando, in which a man’s dead wife is actually his own arm. The Twins hired John Manuel of Baseball America...

Comparing the Twins’ homegrown pitchers and batters since 2004

Comparing the Twins’ homegrown pitchers and batters since 2004

How did the 2017 youngsters compare to years past? Let’s take a look. One of the best parts of being a Twins fan is watching the team draft a player, bring him up through the minors, seeing him break into the majors, and (sometimes) be successful. It's one of those things to take pride in. Like, look at Joe Mauer (except for you, Blame Mauer bot). Mauer is every fan's dream. He was a number one overall pick who moved through the system with ease, put up historic numbers with the big kids, and brought the team accolades and many, many victories. It's just so satisfying. The theme of the...
