The 10 best Mets minor league pitchers I saw this year: 7

Counting down the best minor league pitchers I saw in 2018. Disclaimer: This is a ranking of the best players that I saw during the 2018 season. I saw a wide cross-section of teams in 2018, seeing the Kingsport Mets, Brooklyn Cyclones, Columbia Fireflies, and Binghamton Rumble Ponies, but I did not see the GCL Mets, St. Lucie Mets, or Las Vegas 51s, nor did I attend every single game of the teams that I did see. As such, this is not a comprehensive Mets prospect list. If a player is not on the list, I either did not see him, or considered the listed ten players better. Name: Marcel...

Mets: Decision to non-tender Justin Turner continues to haunt

Five years ago, the New York Mets parted ways with Justin Turner. In 2018, the decision to non-tender him remains a major mistake. In 2013, Los Angeles Dodgers star Justin Turner began to show signs of becoming a productive everyday player. He slashed .280/.319/.385 in 214 plate appearances. The batting average was up to a […] Mets: Decision to non-tender Justin Turner continues to haunt - Rising Apple - Rising Apple - A New York Mets Blog Fan Site - News, Blogs, Opinion and More

Mets Morning News for October 15, 2018

Your Monday morning dose of New York Mets and MLB news, notes, and links. Meet the Mets The Mets are having trouble finding people who will agree to interview with them, and it could be stemming from the way the organization is currently structured. Other teams are in the process of hiring new mangers and two names associated with the Mets have popped up. Bench coach Gary DiSarcina is on the list of 40 names the Rangers have compiled as they search for a new manager, and if Mickey Callaway were to lose his job the Twins would be interested in taking him on as skipper. Around the National...

Mets should spend money on a catcher instead of trading for one

Rather than trade for a catcher, the New York Mets should spend money on a free agent backstop this winter. After a disappointing 2018 season, the New York Mets are already looking into what moves need to be made for next year. A huge dark hole on this team is the catcher position and the Mets could […] Mets should spend money on a catcher instead of trading for one - Rising Apple - Rising Apple - A New York Mets Blog Fan Site - News, Blogs, Opinion and More

Mickey Callaway struggled in his first year at the helm

Mickey Callaway struggled in his first year at the helm

The first time manager had a lot to deal with this season. When Mickey Callaway was brought on as the new manager of the New York Mets, he seemed like charming, enthusiastic hire that would bring a different skill set to the table than the previous regime. In spring training, he backed up all the promises he made at his introductory press conference and it seemed like the Mets had made the right decision with their young manager. For two glorious weeks in April, Callaway could do no wrong. Every button he pressed was the right one and the Mets were off to an 11-1 start. The reality of it...

Mets Morning News for October 14, 2018

Your Sunday morning dose of New York Mets and MLB news, notes, and links. Meet the Mets Within the Mets organization, disagreement continues over organizational structure, which is another factor holding up the GM search, in addition to the debate between old-school and new-school style candidates. Jeff Wilpon made it clear that no one within the organization is being considered for the GM job. But it’s worth noting that former Mets players aren’t the only ones going on to do great things with other organizations. Their former executives are too, writes Tim Healey. A notable example...

New York Mets 2018 Offseason Trade Target: Jonathan Villar

Potential trade target Jonathan Villar would give the New York Mets depth at all infield positions while also giving them some much-needed speed. A mission for the New York Mets this winter should include adding depth to the 25-man roster. With more doubt on the bench than last year, it’s important they find guys who […] New York Mets 2018 Offseason Trade Target: Jonathan Villar - Rising Apple - Rising Apple - A New York Mets Blog Fan Site - News, Blogs, Opinion and More

Brandon Nimmo was the best offensive player on the Mets in 2018

Brandon Nimmo was the best offensive player on the Mets in 2018

The former first round pick made great strides in his first full season in the majors Given how the 2018 season turned out, it’s hard to believe Brandon Nimmo was optioned to Triple-A just ten games into the year. The move followed Michael Conforto’s return from shoulder surgery, which resulted in fewer playing opportunities for the young outfielder. Thankfully, Nimmo was called back up three days later and left no doubt that he deserved a spot on the roster, developing into the team’s most reliable offensive threat while flashing his brilliant and infectious smile. Drafted...

Mets Morning News for October 13, 2018

Your Saturday morning dose of New York Mets and MLB news, notes, and links. Meet the Mets In a move you finally can’t blame on ownership, MLB players voted to nominate Jose Reyes for the Marvin Miller “Man of the Year” Award. Reyes, of course, was suspended for a domestic violence incident a couple of years back, and then sued for non-payment of child support by his mistress in 2017. It’s also notable that while every other nominated player’s profile on the nomination site mentions their extensive charitable endeavors, Reyes’ profile mentions none. The Mets are narrowing down...

Mets pitchers and catchers help keep stolen bases alive in 2018

Stolen bases were down in 2018 across Major League Baseball. This didn’t stop the New York Mets pitchers and catchers from allowing plenty. Home runs, strikeouts, and pitching changes were up in 2018 while many other numbers were down. One of them was stolen bases.
