Winter Meetings Day 2: Will the Sale trade hasten a McCutchen exit?

NATIONAL HARBOR, Md. – We are all waiting to see if the Washington Nationals missing out on Chris Sale hastens the departure of Andrew McCutchen. Nationals GM Mike Rizzo confirmed Tuesday he has talked to the Pirates about McCutchen, but added he’s talked to a lot of teams about a lot of players. Stay tuned.  […]

Winter meetings day 2 thread

By Rob Biertempfel NATIONAL HARBOR, Md. — There were no surprises from GM Neal Huntington this morning when he chatted with Mike Ferrin and Jim Duquette on MLB Network Radio on XM. Although talks with the Nationals appear to have cooled, it still seems likely Andrew McCutchen eventually will be traded. “If we can trade two […]

With Chris Sale off the board, are Nationals turning their attention to Andrew McCutchen?

OXON HILL, Md. — While Pirates general manager Neal Huntington has been relatively mum at baseball’s winter meetings this week regarding a possible Andrew McCutchen trade, Washington Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo told reporters Tuesday that McCutchen is one of the players the Nationals are focusing on now that left-hander Chris Sale is off the board.

Monday Mop-Up Duty …. Live from the winter meetings: A no man’s land

NATIONAL HARBOR, Md. – In the ballrooms and lobbies of the Gaylord National, everyone remains on #McCutchenWatch. The Pirates outfielder is one of the most compelling players available on the trade market. If the Pirates were coming off a 90-win season, if McCutchen hadn’t dropped off so dramatically in 2016, if the Cubs hadn’t arrived […]
On the Pirates: Andrew McCutchen a hot topic at Winter Meetings

On the Pirates: Andrew McCutchen a hot topic at Winter Meetings

OXON HILL, Md. — General manager Neal Huntington prefers to be far from the center of conversation in Major League Baseball’s hot-stove season. He has learned over the past week, however, that rumors run rampant when Andrew McCutchen is reported to be on the trading block. So, Monday, after a baseball insider suggested a “mystery team” was in on McCutchen, Huntington, not one to comment on such speculative reports, showed he was in on the joke.

Winter meetings day 1: Let’s talk pitching

By Rob Biertempfel NATIONAL HARBOR, Md. — Let’s talk pitching. You don’t have to be Bill James to know that finding a veteran starting pitcher is the Pirates’ top priority this offseason. The rotation was their biggest disappointment last season. It doesn’t have to be a No. 1 guy. It’s about time Gerrit Cole starts […]

Winter Meetings, Day 1: Meetings set, deals done

NATIONAL HARBOR, Md. — Greetings from the banks of the Potomac, the epicenter of the baseball world for the next four days. On the docket: Questions surrounding Jung Ho Kang’s latest DUI, the Pirates’ search for pitching, Andrew McCutchen and more.

Giants, Mark Melancon getting record deal done

On the first day of the winter meetings, the Giants were about to sign the closer they desperately needed. Melancon saved 47 games and posted a 1.64 ERA last season with the Pirates and Nationals. Aroldis Chapman and Kenley Jansen also are free agents, and the Giants expressed some degree of interest in Greg Holland, who’s coming off Tommy John surgery, but Melancon, who turns 32 in March, was the target. Santiago Casilla lost the closer’s job in September, and the Giants’ bullpen woes were exposed in the ugliest inning of the season — the ninth inning of Game 4 of the Division...

Rich Hill gets his L.A. payday: 3 years, $48 million

“I think it’s something that has been an incredible journey to get to this point, but never did I ever think that I would pack it in,” Hill, 36, said at the winter meetings in suburban Washington. Hill was 1-1 with a 3.46 ERA in three postseason starts for the NL West champion Dodgers, throwing six scoreless innings to win Game 3 of the NL Championship Series against the Cubs. The Blue Jays signed versatile Steve Pearce and Philadelphia added reliever Joaquin Benoit. There has been no movement yet on the top trade targets — White Sox left-hander Chris Sale, Pirates outfielder...

Cardinals news and notes: Holliday, Maness, and Garcia

We are still processing recent moves, so catch up before the Winter Meetings possibly blow everything so far away. On Saturday evening, longtime Cardinals left fielder Matt Holliday signed a one-year, $13 million contract with the New York Yankees. It is the second time in recent years that an aging Cardinals corner outfielder headed to New York, after Carlos Beltran following 2013. The news was hardly surprising; the final weekend of the Cardinals’ season against the Pittsburgh Pirates was as much a victory lap for their veteran outfielder as it was a critical series in a playoff race....
