Paul Zeise: The Pirates' pitching success hinges on Joe Musgrove

Jameson Taillon hasn’t been anything close to the ace he was supposed to be. Ivan Nova seems to be a couple more bad starts away from either being DFA’d or traded for whatever anyone is willing to give the Pirates. Chad Kuhl is extremely inconsistent and seems to struggle beyond the fifth inning. Steven Brault has already flamed out and is in the bullpen, a role that seems to fit him well.

Joe Starkey: Joe Musgrove inspired by his father’s harrowing journey

There’s no telling what might cross Joe Musgrove’s mind Friday when he makes his Pirates debut at PNC Park, but I can promise you this: At some point, he will think of his father, Mark, a long-time San Diego police officer whose brush with death 10 years ago changed Joe’s life for good.

CINCINNATI — Ivan Nova’s spring of discontent continued.

The 'Pirate Way' is working out for Kyle Crick

Pirates win extra-inning affair over Reds, end losing streak

CINCINNATI — For most of the season, the Pirates have beat up on worse teams. The ability to come back late in games, particularly against those sub-.500 squads, seems to have been a calling card. The first game of their season, an extra-inning affair against the Detroit Tigers, set the tone for this early part of the season, and the Pirates have made a habit of scratching their way back into games against the Tigers and the Chicago White Sox of the world.
