ST. LOUIS — With fewer than five weeks left before the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline, the Pirates have 35 wins and 41 losses. They marched into Monday, their final day off before the All-Star break, five games behind the first-place Milwaukee Brewers in a tightly clustered National League Central Division and trailing by 11 games in the wild-card standings.

They were procured by a pitcher, the anonymous chief inspector in this undercover investigation, and were passed from player to player, each offering his opinion on whether the balls differed. One was from 2014, the year run production in the majors hit its lowest point since 1976. The other was from 2017.
