CINCINNATI – The precipitous decline of Braves first baseman Troy Glaus has become a glaring issue, never more than the first two games of the weekend series with the Reds.
After going 0-for-5 with five groundouts on Friday, Glaus went 0-for-4 with two groundouts, a pop-up and a strikeout in Saturday’s loss.
Glaus has hit .158 (17-for-107) with no home runs and six RBIs in his past 31 games, including 4-for-30 on the nine-game trip that ends Sunday.
What’s puzzling to some Braves officials and teammates is that Glaus’ skid began immediately after a torrid stretch in which he ...
CINCINNATI – Braves second baseman Martin Prado has a fractured right pinky and will miss at least one week and possible require a stint on the 15-day disabled list.
The news could have been a lot worse for the Braves, who feared their All-Star leadoff man might be out a lot longer after he was hurt sliding head-first at home plate in the 10th inning of Friday’s 6-4 win against the Cincinnati Reds.
“There was a hole right beside home plate,” Prado said Saturday. “My finger stuck in it. I didn’t see the hole. I was just trying to reach for home plate, and that fing...
( Date ) TORONTO: On his way out the door, Jake Westbrook did the Indians a favor. The veteran right-hander gave up a portion of a trade bonus to help ease the way for the Tribe to complete a three-team deal that sent Westbrook to the St. Louis Cardinals. In return, the Indians acquired right-handed minor-league starter Corey Kluber from the San Diego Padres.

Relief pitcher Will Ohman has been on the Marlins' radar at least since 2008. On Saturday, they finally got him - at the expense of some starting pitching depth.
MARLINS MINUTE Scouting Report Roy Oswalt, P, Phillies Barring a rotation change, the Marlins should face Oswalt on Wednesday at home in his second start for the Phillies after losing his debut Friday.
On the day franchise icon Lance Berkman was officially traded to the New York Yankees, the Astros relied heavily on the new guard to pound the Milwaukee Brewers in a 6-0 victory Saturday before 38,824 at Minute Maid Park.
Royals hitting coach Kevin Seitzer watches closely as Alex Gordon works on his swing. It’s 4:40 p.m. on Thursday, hours before a game against Baltimore, and Gordon — who has already worked up a good sweat — is almost in a robotic trance now, ripping line drive after line drive in the indoor batting cages at Kauffman Stadium. In many ways, this is Gordon’s inner sanctum. When he’s here, he can’t hear the whispers about his future. He can’t hear the scouts who question his approach at the plate or whether he’ll ever ...
Twins outfielder Michael Cuddyer was the ninth overall pick in the 1997 draft but didn’t live up to expectations until he was 27 and hit .284 with 24 homers and 109 RBIs in 2006. Alex Gordon will turn 27 next season. Here’s a comparison of their careers:

Even after sending veterans Rick Ankiel and Kyle Farnsworth to Atlanta in a five-player trade that just beat Saturday’s non-waiver trading deadline, the Royals might not be done dealing. General manager Dayton Moore reiterated plans to recall first baseman Kila Ka’aihue in the near future — a move that only seems likely if the Royals find a new home for designated hitter/outfielder José Guillen.
SAN FRANCISCO -- Can Ted Lilly hit? How about Octavio Dotel?
The Dodgers may have reason to believe they needed pitching first and foremost at the trade deadline, but if the team doesn't start producing some runs, it's hard to imagine the new acquisitions can boost the team back into playoff contention.
Another meager offensive day -- producing just three hits for the second time in three days -- set the stage for a particularly painful loss, this time by a 2-1 score when the Giants' Pat Burrell hit a two-run homer off Jonathan Broxton in the bottom of the eighth.
"When you aren't scoring runs...

If you’re looking for ways to describe Robinson Cano, here’s a suggestion from Alex Rodriguez: Most valuable player.
“That’s certainly the look and taste and feel of an MVP,” Rodriguez said. “That was a huge, huge hit against their closer, on the road, trying to protect first place. It doesn’t get any bigger than that.”
For five [...]
For a while, it seemed Robinson Cano was the only Yankees hitter who could solve Matt Garza tonight, but his biggest hit came off all-star closer Rafael Soriano. Cano’s ninth-inning home run gave the Yankees a 5-4 win that kept them in the lead in the American League East. The Rays could have moved into [...]
Brett Anderson's return from the disabled list wasn't a start he'll savor much, but Anderson appears healthy, if rusty, and that's the main consideration for the A's when it comes to their young ace-in-the-making. Anderson was making just his seventh...

The Padres newest acquisition, outfielder Ryan Ludwick, will be flying from St. Louis to San Diego Saturday evening as the Padres host the Floirda Marlins in the second game of a three-game series at Petco Park (5:35 p.m.; TV: 4 San Diego).
Top Rays pitching prospect Jeremy Hellickson will be called up to start Monday's game against Minnesota.
Hellickson, 12-3, 2.45 at Triple-A Durham, may be making just a cameo appearance. Manager Joe Maddon said they aren't planning to drop any of the five starters from the rotation, and will just push each back a day to gain some extra rest in the stretch of 20 games in 20 days.
Hellickson could go into the bullpen, but it appears more likely he will go back to Durham.
Saturday night's great start by right-hander Rich Harden was helped by the fact that Harden didn't over- analyze things between pitches. He said he's never been that type of pitcher before in his career, but fell into that routine this...
By Anthony Andro ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Jarrod Saltalamacchia created a buzz in 2007 when he was the most recognizable name in Texas' trade with Atlanta for Mark Teixeira.Exactly three years later, Saltalamacchia was again part of a deadline-deal trade, only this one didn't create as much buzz.Saltalamacchia simply hopes his new start with the Boston Red Sox creates a much-needed change of scenery."It was just one of those things where it was time to leave Texas," Saltalamacchia said.
