Sunday kickaround

Washington Post — *Today's D.C. United preview focuses on goalkeeper Bill Hamid, who has shown greater maturity amid the club's terrible season and is headed to U.S. national team training camp later this month. *Today is defender Robbie Russell's farewell to pro soccer after 12 seasons. Medical school awaits. I would expect to see him in the 18 against visiting Sporting Kansas City but playing time will depend on the course of the match. In addition to praising Russell's longevity and leadership, Brandon McDonald said about his brainy teammate: Read full article >>

Black And Red United — Hey, our team has a functioning website again. Way to go, D.C. United! Even with their help, this daily links post is a bit tougher than I anticipated it would be. I estimate that this blog contains half of the D.C. United content on the internet on a daily basis, and that's an estimate that is generous to the rest of the internet. But you probably already knew that. Today's edition of Freedom Kicks implores you to help Bill Hamid get some national love. D.C. United Player of the Month for March 2013

Black And Red United — We may be under new management here at B&RU;, but like the Starks of Winterfell, ours are the Old Ways, and the monthly choosing of the best is an established tradition we're going to keep going. Keep your eye out later today for a new addition to our traditions, but for now, I'll leave you with the nominees for March Player of the Month: Bill Hamid - Let's be honest; United's backstop is going to win this month's contest in a walk. He's been among the best goalkeepers - hell, the best players at any position - in all of MLS this year, and he's the biggest reason D.C. United have only ...

D.C. United vs. Columbus Crew Recap and Highlights: Goalkeeping showcase ends 2-1 for the visitors

Black And Red United — Nobody in D.C. United's locker room was happy with the team's 2-1 home loss to the Columbus Crew on Saturday night. Not only did the loss snap their 17-game home unbeaten streak; not only did the two goals double the number conceded by United on the season; not only was Bill Hamid forced to stand on his head again to keep the score as low as it was. It was also the case that this was a winnable game. Despite being outshot by the Crew, it took Columbus goalkeeper Andy Gruenebaum's own shot-stopping clinic to save a draw for the visitors. The game started slowly for United. Forced to aba...

Goalie Bill Hamid does his part but D.C. United falls to Columbus, 2-1

Washington Post — The fact that D.C. United’s Bill Hamid made five marvelous saves Saturday was both heartening and troubling for Coach Ben Olsen. The 22-year-old goalkeeper remains in fine form, but the amount of work required of him is a sign of United’s deficiencies elsewhere. Read full article >>

Filibuster Podcast: D.C. United's draw in New Jersey, previewing Columbus with Rick Gethin of Massive Report

Black And Red United — In this week's episode of Filibuster - the Black & Red United Podcast, we talk about what went right in D.C. United's draw against the New York Red Bulls (Bill Hamid) and what went wrong (everything else). We also question ChestRockwell's Old Person Cred, much to his dismay. The fact that he suffers from dismay is probably good enough to restore what Old Person Cred he might have lost in the show, actually. So good week for him. In the second segment, we've got audio from Monday morning's training session, where we got a chance to chat with goalkeeper Bill Hamid, centerback Ethan W...

Two D.C. United players called up for national team duty; neither of them is American

Black And Red United — There's no doubt in anybody's mind that Bill Hamid had the best week of any goalkeeper in MLS during Rivalry Week this past weekend (actually the best player this week, as he's just been named MLS Player of the Week). Nor is there any doubt that many American soccer fans have been pining to see Chris Pontius don the Red, White & Blue. But neither of them will be traveling to Denver or Mexico City this week for the U.S. Men's National Team's World Cup Qualifiers, as they have both been left off of Jurgan Klinsmann's 23-man roster for the matches. That actually isn't all that bad for...

MLS weekend in review

Washington Post — Player of the week: Goal-scorers receive a disproportionate amount of accolades, so this week we salute D.C. United goalkeeper Bill Hamid, who made breathtaking slap saves on Tim Cahill's sliding one-timer and Brandon Barklage's deflected header to secure an undeserved away point for his possession-deficient club. The Last Word: D.C. United and Bill Hamid Steal a Point in New Jersey

Black And Red United — On their first return to New Jersey's Red Bull Arena since D.C. United dispatched the New York Red Bulls in the 2012 Major League Soccer playoffs, both teams faced similar circumstances to last November's match: snow, lots of empty seats, and the Red Bulls desperate for a home win. This time, however, D.C. United wasn't able to pull out any offensive magic, although Bill Hamid was nothing short of Houdini-esque in keeping the Red Bulls off the scoreboard and preserving a 0-0 draw. And, as has become the trend early in the 2013 season, this game left many D.C. United fans questioning ...

  • New York Red Bulls 0-0 D.C. United: Recap and highlights - Good guys escape Jersey with a scoreless draw
Outside of Bill Hamid and Dejan Jakovic - and maybe second-half substitute Marcos Sanchez - nobody playing for D.C. United had a particularly good day on Saturday. Nevertheless, the Black-and-Red escaped New Jersey with a scoreless draw against the New York Red Bulls. When I say that Bill Hamid - sorry, make that Man of the Match Bill Hamid - had a good day, I'm not kidding. He may have won himself his second Save of the Week in this 3-week-old season, and is a surefire lock to keep his spot as top fantasy keeper in MLS for another week. If only his teammates had been as up to speed as...
  • MLS First Kick 2013 Countdown: 28 days - Will Bill Hamid still be with D.C. United a year from now
Just a few days ago, Andy Najar became the first MLS homegrown player to be sold abroad - and to a perennial Champions League team, no less. It was almost enough to make us momentarily forget D.C. United's first ever homegrown signing, Bill Hamid. You know, the guy who had the best saves percentage in MLS last year. The 22-year-old with a better goals against average than Nick Rimando, Tally Hall or Josh Saunders (not to mention Sean Johnson - not that I'm pushing any agenda there). The guy who holds the record for the youngest goalkeeper to record a win in Major League Soccer history....
