Chad Marshall makes 4th MLS Best XI

Chad Marshall makes 4th MLS Best XI

His other appearances were the year he won the Chad Marshall Defender of the Year (2008, 2009, 2014). While Chad Marshall was not named 2019 MLS Defender of the Year, writers, players and club executives did reward him with a 4th appearance on the MLS Best XI. Marshall’s first appearance was back in 2008 with the Columbus Crew. He now has two Best XIs with each of the two teams he’s played for from 2004-present. Marshall is joined on the backline by Aaron Long (Defender of the Year) and Kemar Lawerence, both of the New York Red Bulls. Zach Steffen (Keeper of the Year for some reason)...

Second leg will center on Roman Torres for Sounders

The Panamanian centerback will play a crucial role in Seattle’s hopes to advance past the Portland Timbers. TUKWILA, Wash. — In the wake of Chad Marshall’s knee surgery Tuesday, Seattle’s playoff hopes will center around the defensive capabilities of centerback Roman Torres in Thursday’s second leg against the Portland Timbers. While Torres has fallen out of the starting XI for most of the 2018 season, he returns at a critical moment in Seattle’s hopes to thwart the Timbers and advance to the conference finals. Torres replaced Marshall in the first leg of the playoff at...

Aaron Long pays homage to Chad Marshall after winning Defender Of The Year Award

The New York Red Bulls Defender knows what an honor it is to win the award in Marshall’s presence. Former Seattle Sounders FC and current New York Red Bulls defender Aaron Long was deemed Major League Soccer’s Defender of the Year on Wednesday morning. It certainly was well deserved, but 3-time award winner Chad Marshall, who finished second in this year’s voting, took to Twitter to respond to Long winning the award. A huge congrats to @A_LoLo12 on Defender of the Year! Well deserved. Been a big fan since 2014 and it’s amazing to watch your rise. Us old guys will try again next...

Aaron Long wins Chad Marshall Defender of Year award

Former Sounder edges out the man the award will eventually be named after. Aaron Long has edged out Chad Marshall to win the 2018 MLS Defender of the Year, carrying the player and media voting blocs. Although Marshall won the club vote, Long won the overall vote 26.52%—20.93% despite his teammate Kemar Lawrence also finishing in the top five. Long anchored a Red Bulls backline that led the league in goals allowed and won the Supporters’ Shield. Long, who played for the Sounders in 2014 and for S2 in 2015, has been on a rather impressive trajectory since joining the New...

Nos Audietis, Episode 289: Not quite a disaster

Sounder head home trailing 2-1. Not exactly the result the Sounders were looking for, but a 2-1 loss in Portland is not the end of the world. The Sounders got the away goal and history tells us that heading one witha one-goal deficit isn’t that big of a disadvantage. Of possibly more concern is the injuries to Cristian Roldan and Chad Marshall. Roldan looks like he might be able to suit up on thursday, but Marshall could be out for the rest of the year after undergoing surgery. We talked all about that while also taking questions on such subjects as Frei-day and favorite French...

Chad Marshall undergoes surgery for meniscus injury

Cristian Roldan will be a “game-time decision.” TUKWILA, Wash. — Seattle Sounders centerback Chad Marshall underwent surgery Tuesday morning for a meniscus injury, head coach Brian Schmetzer told the media at training. Marshall, 34, was forced into an early exit from Seattle’s 2018 MLS Cup Playoff match against the Portland Timbers at Providence Park Sunday due to the injury. “Marshall is having surgery this morning for a meniscus injury,” Schmetzer said. “I will give you further updates once the surgery is successful and he is back on his feet.” Schmetzer was quoted after...

Winners & Losers: Sounders 1, Other Team 2

Unforeseeable bad things happened in the first half of a tense playoff rivalry match. I never know what to expect when we play Portland. I’ve seen the Sounders go to Portland and get trounced. I’ve seen the Sounders go to Portland and score with ease. I’ve seen all sorts of things happen when we play in Portland and I still have no idea what to expect. I’ll tell you what, my soul might as well have been injured when Chad Marshall was laying there. It was one of those “life flashes before your eyes” moments. I saw it all in that moment. Thankfully that moment was the worst that...

Chad Marshall, Cristian Roldan injury updates

Chad Marshall, Cristian Roldan injury updates

Neither player is likely to be available for Leg 2. PORTLAND, Ore. — Perhaps more dispiriting than the result itself was the Seattle Sounders losing two of their most important players to injury in the first half. Cristian Roldan hurt his hip flexor when being taken down by goalkeeper Jeff Attinella in the 6th minute and Chad Marshall suffered a knee injury around the 36th minute. “It’s not a ligament tear for Chad,” Sounders head coach Brian Schmetzer said. “He’s a tough kid. He’ll be back. Cristian had a right hip flexor on the penalty. That’s where it came from, but...

Stefan Frei’s constant desire for improvement drives his Goalkeeper of Year candidacy

Goalkeeper is also quick to credit the play of his teammates for honor of being award finalist. TUKWILA, Wash. — The theme of improvement has pushed the Seattle Sounders to unlikely comebacks for the past three seasons, propelling them past slow starts to a pair of MLS Cup Finals. The same theme has pushed three players: Chad Marshall, Stefan Frei and Osvaldo Alonso, onto the shortlist for MLS’ player of the year awards. “I told them today at film, I said ‘yeah, these guys are being considered — Frei, Chad and Ozzie — but they can’t do it without the rest of you guys,’”...

Three Sounders named among MLS award finalists

Stefan Frei, Chad Marshall and Osvaldo Alonso all up for awards. Three Seattle Sounders were named among the finalists for various end-of-season MLS awards on Wednesday. Stefan Frei (Goalkeeper of the Year) and Chad Marshall (Defender of the Year) were largely expected to be finalists and should probably be considered the favorites to win their respective awards. Osvaldo Alonso’s bid as Comeback Player of the Year was a little bit more of a surprise and is likely a considerably longer shot; the other finalists are Gyasi Zardes (19 goals) and Zlatan Ibrahimovic (1.34 goals + assists per...
