Sounders FC Blog | Seattle Times — Two goals for Eddie Johnson in Saturday's 4-2 home win against FC Dallas has led to another prize. The Sounders FC forward was voted MLS Player of the Week by the North American Soccer Reporters for Week 12. It marked the third time Johnson has earned the award with Seattle, having also claimed the honor in Week 22 and Week 27 last season after wins against the Los Angeles Galaxy and Chivas USA, respectively. The 29-year-old received 17 of the 25 first-place votes. Teammate Lamar Neagle got two votes. Johnson has a team-leading four goals in league play and five in all competitions, when incl...

Eddie Johnson introduces FC Dallas to the boom boom(s). (animated)

Sounder At Heart — Hard to complain when things are rolling for your team. The Seattle Sounders FC are rolling as of late, and last night's 4-2 victory over FC Dallas could be more evidence that this team is waking up and smelling points. Eddie Johnson scored two go-ahead goals, Lamar Neagle scored in his second consecutive match, and Obafemi Martins came off the bench and sealed the game with an emphatic goal and flip(s). I present the animated gifs of EJ's goals with little comment. Just watch the quick feet. The speed, the strength, and the touch of EJ is on display on this first goal: Eddie's ...

MLS explains why Eddie Johnson wasn't suspended for actions in the Philadelphia game

Sounders FC Blog | Seattle Times — http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ymyke6rBjAI *     *     * Many wondered if Sounders FC forward Eddie Johnson might earn a one-game suspension from the MLS Disciplinary Committee for actions late in Saturday's tie in Philadelphia. Johnson appeared to shove over Union forward Antoine Hoppenot with his knee as he got up from a tackle in the final minutes of the game. It was a move that Nelson Rodriguez, the league's executive vice president of competition and game operations, addressed in the video above in comparison to suspension-worthy plays by San Jose's Steven Lenhart and Sporting KC's Paulo ...

Eddie Johnson scores and shows us the Boom Boom Slide. (Animated)

Sounder At Heart — The goal that Eddie Johnson scored to put the Seattle Sounders FC up 1-0 against the Philadelphia Union was fairly pedestrian. With a free run, EJ was able to rise up on the corner kick and head it towards the Union's goal. Goalkeeper Zac MacMath was late to react to the low header and got tangled up with Jack McInerney as the ball went beyond the line. And then EJ celebrated in a way only EJ could celebrate. Let's let the gif do all the talking: The pièce de résistance is the little pose he throws on at the end of the slide. Bonus gif - the goal that spawned the Boom Boom Slide: ...

Injury Update: Eddie Johnson returning, Obafemi Martins on path back

Sounder At Heart — Bye weeks are a time of healing, but there is no magic spray or spell that gets players back to full health after X days off. Sigi Schmid gave the breakdown on the various players with issues at this point. Obafemi Martins - Oba's on the plan, in terms of what we did with him last Wednesday so he's progressing as we thought he should, probably a little bit ahead. • Injury Update: Johnson should play, Evans questionable, Martins still out
Obafemi Martins is clearly not going to play on Tuesday night in Torreon as the Seattle Sounders try to upset Santos Laguna and continue to make history in the tournament. But the team may, or may not, have the services of Eddie Johnson and Brad Evans. "Eddie did more today," head coach Sigi Schmid said following a rainy day of training on Sunday. "So we'll see how he is. The anticipation is that we have 48 hours so he'll be close to being ready. I don't know if that's start ready or sub ready." Seattle traveled via a charter to Torreon, Mexico in hopes to increase their chances of p...
  • Obafemi Martins out next week, Eddie Johnson does fitness work
Seattle Sounders FC will likely be without at least two of their four listed forwards for the match at Santos Laguna next Tuesday. Obafemi Martins is getting his knee looked at by a foreign specialist and David Estrada's eye is still healing from a non-foul incident in the RSL game. Eddie Johnson may be back for the next match. "We'll see how Eddie is tomorrow," Sigi Schmid said after Thursday's practice. "Oba's situation is that after consultation with our doctors and our trainers they didn't feel he could play on Tuesday. He's had this injury before and he's been treated by a doctor ...
  • Filling the Creative Hole
Teams are going to face choices on how to defend the speedy duo of Obafemi Martins and Eddie Johnson. It gets even more complex due to Steve Zakuani sitting on one flank. Sigi Schmid says the Seattle Sounders will need to react to the open space as it is given. "Do they want to play a high line? Do they want to take that risk? Do they drop off a bit more because they respect the speed?" Responding to the highline for a team with this much speed will be easy. The ball will be going up and over, or through, that line when it is offered. In some cases this will mean more direct play. In o...
  • Obafemi Martins practices with team for first time, should play against Salt Lake
Obafemi Martins and Eddie Johnson logged significant travel miles over the past week in order to help club and country. After today's practice session it seems likely that both will be able to feature in the two matches that are causing Sigi Schmid to juggle lineups. Mario Martinez is unlikely to start on Saturday. "Obviously Mario played both games pretty much in their entirety only short like seven minutes. Eddie had less minutes so I think Eddie's availability is good for both games Saturday and Tuesday," Schmid told the gathered media on Thursday. "For Mario it might be a situation...
  • Johnson plays 35 and Martinez goes 90 in National Team duty
The United States earned their extraordinarily rare point at Azteca with Eddie Johnson putting in 35 minutes all the way up top unlike his past matches for Jurgen Klinsmann. Midfielder Mario Martinez played the full 90 for Honduras in their road loss to Panama. The two performances may help long term recruiting for Hanauer & Co, but right now they create lineup questions for Sigi Schmid. "That's something that we're still looking at. Obviously we want to wait until we see how the National Team games go today, to see how many minutes people put on their backs," Schmid said after Tue...
