10 man RSL tie 2-2

A back and forth game left each team with a point. There was a clear sense of purpose and urgency from the home side from the beginning. A clear chance came off a set piece for Phanuel Kavita in his first MLS start but he hit it high. RSL had quite a few good chances to score but their goal would come off of a beautiful executed free kick play with Luke Mulholland going to Kyle Beckean who found Joao Plata who flicked it to Olmes Garcia who scored his second goal of the season. It was a beautiful play to behold. Unfortunately for Salt Lake, Tchani found an equalizer at yet end of the first...

Chris Schuler set for Real Monarchs run-out in fitness bid

Chris Schuler's return to soccer will come on Saturday, but it won't be for Real Salt Lake. In a bid to increase his fitness as he works his way back from another long-term injury, he's set to play at least one match for Real Monarchs. One of the originally proposed benefits for a USL team, as Real Monarchs are, was in bringing players back from injury, but it hasn't been used for that express purpose yet. This is somewhat surprising, with both Joao Plata and Sebastian Jaime coming back from longer layoffs this season. Schuler underwent meniscus surgery in April after suffering a knee...

Talking Tactics: From cookie-cutter to fresh out of the oven, the transformation of Joao Plata

Joao Plata's qualities as a striker are well-known, but he's tasked with finding his role again in Real Salt Lake's new setup — and he has the perfect set of skills to do it. Transformation is a process, something Real Salt Lake has found itself at the mercy of in recent history.  From a mishmash starting lineup week end and week out, to players adopting new roles in the squad, this season has already held a ton of ups and downs for the Claret-and-Cobalt.  Still, through the valleys and mountains, RSL has continued on this journey of discovery. No one understands this sentiment better...

Real Salt Lake vs. Sounders 2 recap: Open Cup loss lies at feet of referee

The first half between Seattle Sounders FC 2 and hosts Real Salt Lake was relatively even. S2 would breakout and threaten a touch more often, but the match was even. Then Sam Garza took a long throw and worked magic in first half added time. It was the magic of the cup, and hope for a Cinderella run. That hope would not last. The second 45 ratcheted up the tensions, the violence and the referee incompetence. Damion Lowe run over Joao Plata. It was an NFL style tackle. There was no call, which was good for S2, but inspired Plata, who got in Lowe's face. And then scored in the 63rd...

Glad to make first MLS start, Plata back in RSL XI

Justen Glad, 18, will make his first MLS appearance today with a start against Vancouver Whitecaps as Jeff Cassar rolled out a lineup that featured a number of surprises — including starts for Sebastian Jaime and Joao Plata. Glad signed with Real Salt Lake mid-2014 but hadn't made a first-team appearance to date. He had, however, made several appearances with Real Monarchs, playing well during that time. His first start comes with the resting of Tony Beltran, who has played nearly every minute in 2015 to date, sitting only for seven minutes against Vancouver Whitecaps earlier this year,...
