Joao Plata scores twice for Ecuador against El Salvador, both in audacious fashion

Joao Plata's goalscoring antics are continuing apace, and he's doing it now for Ecuador. He scored his first and second international goals today against El Salvador, and both of them had an air of the fantastic to them — sort of like every goal he scores for us. The first — his first — came around the 15th minute against El Salvador. It takes a pretty wicked deflection, but it's still a good look towardgoal. The second came in the first half, too, and while it's not as ostentatious, it's every bit as beautiful as he slides the ball between the goalkeeper's legs. The second half...

Joao Plata had a great second half against the United States

Joao Plata played the second half for Ecuador against the United States in a 1-1 draw tonight, giving him 45 more minutes than either Real Salt Lake player with the USMNT. Plata was an impressive attacking option on the left side for Ecuador, and he had two distinct opportunities that could have resulted in goals. The first saw him break past a horrible, static American defense, only to be whistled incorrectly for being offside. Tim Ream — who inexplicably keeps getting minutes for the U.S. — kept Plata very well onside, and Plata was through one-on-one with Guzan. The second saw him...

Joao Plata called in to Ecuador again for matches against United States, El Salvador

Ecuador and Real Salt Lake's Joao Plata, leading scorer for the season and the only striker that's been dangerous through the entire season, has been called up to his national team again. It's the second time in the last little bit that Plata's been called up, a deserved plaudit for his play and a reassurance that he's playing at a genuinely high level. It's worth considering that Plata is still only 22 years old, and the experience he gains playing with the Ecuadorian national team is significant. Plata will undoubtedly miss the Oct. 11 match against San Jose Earthquakes. Ecuador plays...

Plata, Gil, Garcia all named to MLS 24 Under 24 list

In a move that shocks basically nobody, RSL had three players named to MLS's 24 Under 24 list: Joao Plata, Luis Gil, and Olmes Garcia. #7: Joao Plata In case you've forgotten, Joao Plata is really great. And honestly, there's no way you could forget that, because we simply won't stop talking about him here at RSL Soapbox. It's reassuring, though, to see that other people at least somewhat recognize his talent, but it's a little surprising to see him so low on the list. Plata has been on the outer edge of 2014 MVP talks, such has been his importance to Real Salt Lake. At only 22, that's not...

Expected goals and what the stats say about Joao Plata's goalscoring efforts

We've been writing a lot about Joao Plata this week. Really, it's probably hard to blame us, but if, for some reason or another, you don't love the little guy, turn around now. We're still waxing poetic about his abilities. We're not talking dancing ability, either - we're instead going to focus on Joao Plata's shooting ability and how it impacts our play. If you follow MLS ‘advanced analytics' - a fluffy term to be sure, but something we should at least look toward - Joao Plata is not just Real Salt Lake's most efficient shooter, but the most efficient in all of MLS. American Soccer...

Vote for BWP: MLS Goal of Week 28

How many goals must he score before he wins one of these things? Another week, another Red Bull in the running for a MLS accolade. BWP's third goal of his third hat-trick of the season is a nominee for Goal of Week 28 - vote here. If you need a little help deciding, consider the following synopses: - Jose Mari's goal was a fluke. - Joao Plata's was a hit-and-hope effort of the sort we see most weeks. - Luis Silva's was the twin of Federico Higuain's, which didn't make the shortlist. How good is a goal if its twin can't make the same list? - Diego Valeri's is the twin of BWP's. For real:...

How and why Joao Plata might be the best Real Salt Lake player

Joao Plata's season has been not just good, but great. In his fourth MLS season to date, Plata has taken himself from a young prospect at a perennially struggling Toronto FC to a key cog in Real Salt Lake's machinations. It's been a remarkable rise for the 22-year-old, who is certain to feature high up the list in MLS's 24-under-24, which starts today. In 22 games, he's scored 13 goals (0.6 per game) and penned five assists. As a point of contrast, Alvaro Saborio's last full season —  2012 — saw him score 17 goals in 31 games (0.55 per game). It's clear that Plata is very good, but...

What we learned from Real Salt Lake's resounding 5-1 win over Colorado Rapids

Real Salt Lake's 5-1 win over Colorado Rapids provided plenty to learn as the team gained important ground in the Western Conference. Weston Jenson takes us through three things we learned in that victory. 1. Plata is among the best in MLS When the MLS brass likes to drop names of the best strikers in the league they name Martins, Dempsey, Keane, and Wright-Phillips — but there is a new name to add to their list: Joao Plata. When discussing the MVP race, production is certainly on the side for Plata. Joao has enjoyed a great year with Real Salt Lake, tallying 13 goals and five assists to...
