Joao Plata stands out in RSL’s 1-0 win

Joao Plata stands out in RSL’s 1-0 win

In which I summarily eat my hat. Over the last two weeks, my level of exasperation with Real Salt Lake attacker Joao Plata raised to a near-boil. He’d been, to my mind, a negative force on the team, even if he was scoring goals. Maybe I was right about that — and maybe I wasn’t right at all. But across 90 minutes of action (87, actually, but who’s counting?), Plata made me eat my words, and I can’t be happier about it. Was he the best player of the match? Maybe, maybe not. I’m not here to tell you who my man of the match was. (It was Jefferson Savarino. I think.) I’m here to...

Why RSL couldn’t fill their bench against FC Dallas

Why RSL couldn’t fill their bench against FC Dallas

With 12 absences, RSL just couldn’t fill a seven-man bench. Real Salt Lake was unable to fill their bench for tonight’s match on the road against FC Dallas, with only five players meeting the call for substitutes. If that doesn’t tell you a lot about the state of things for RSL, then perhaps looking at the causes for absences would be efficacious. Starting lineup Matt VanOekel; Chris Wingert, Aaron Maund, Chris Schuler; Tony Beltran; Omar Holness, Kyle Beckerman, Luke Mulholland, Joao Plata; Albert Rusnák; Yura Movsisyan Substitutes: Lalo Fernandez, Justin Schmidt, Reagan Dunk, Jose...

Waibel: It’s all about confidence for Plata, Movsisyan

GM Craig Waibel isn’t cutting a worried figure over RSL’s strikers. If you’ve been wondering what’s up with Yura Movsisyan sitting on the bench, Joao Plata misfiring, and Real Salt Lake’s general goalscoring malaise, you’re not alone. But RSL general manager Craig Waibel says it’s more about confidence and adjusting to change that’s affected Movsisyan and Plata — the latter of whom he says is really starting to fire on all cylinders. In an interview on ESPN700 with commentator Bill Riley, Waibel talked about how change has affected his strikers in 2017. Change affects...

Plata’s agent says he’s a target for two Mexican clubs

Is Joao Plata’s agent agitating for a move away from RSL? That rumor we wrote about Joao Plata being a target for Liga MX side Monarcas? Well, that specific link doesn’t seem to be going anywhere, but a new one just landed on Monday. This time, it’s Joao Plata’s agent, Gonzalo Vargas, who apparently also represents Plata’s Ecuadorian compatriot, Enner Valencia. He’s told Ecuadorian outlet Estadio that Plata is a target for two Mexican clubs, but that any move is apparently complicated. "Es jugador franquicia, al nivel de Pirlo, Villa en la MLS, siendo el jugador más...

Goal Breakdown: Movement, understanding give Plata first goal of 2017

Did Joao Plata score RSL’s best goal of 2017? Joao Plata’s first goal of 2017 was more than just a moment of relief for the striker — it was a demonstration that his movement and understanding with the attackers around him is progressing at a real clip. First, we have to go back to a failed cross from Philadelphia and a nice bit of hard work from Tony Beltran. We talked about Beltran’s effort here and how his hard work makes a difference — and there’s no better place to start when we’re talking about this goal. Beltran feeds Savarino on the left flank. Let’s...

Three things RSL can improve upon against Houston

Three things RSL can improve upon against Houston

Loss-Win-Loss-Win is a habit we can't get into. I'm trying not to let myself get excited but it seems like the real Joao Plata has returned to the Real Salt Lake starting line up. That was the kind of dynamic performance that he's capable of that, along with the return of long underrated right back Tony Beltran, spurred RSL onto a 1-0 win. Goals, chances, clean sheet. Perfect performance, right? Well, almost. This is always three things we can do better and sometimes they might be little things but it's always the little things. I'm not every trying to rain on the parade but we're a team...

RSL vs. Philadelphia: Joao Plata, Man of the Match

RSL vs. Philadelphia: Joao Plata, Man of the Match

Plata is back. If there was one player that we all wanted to return to form, it was Joao Plata. Well, good news. He came through against Philadelphia. Plata was the beset player on the field for either team putting in the work on both ends, making sprints back and forth when necessary. He was hungry to score, but he wasn’t taking poor shots just to take shots. He took good chances when they came and his build up with Savarino was a thing of beauty which ultimately led to the goal that got him off the schneid. If Plata can maintain this type of play, RSL will have a very good chance of...
