Goal Breakdown: Joao Plata does it again with his head against Seattle Sounders

It seems a little routine by this point, doesn't it? Joao Plata scoring with his head was supposed to be a once-in-a-lifetime event. Thanks to a bit of magic on Saturday against Seattle Sounders, we saw it again. The magnificence of Plata's play hasn't typically included headed goals, but it's worth noting that he's been challenging players in the air. He's playing well outside of his size. While the goal against DC United was a clinical free header in the area, this one was a bit more difficult. We broke down his first headed goal, and let's break down his second, too. It's a fairly simple...

Around MLS: Joao Plata, Andrea Pirlo to MLS, New England wins lottery, more

Smallest dude in MLS scores another header, silly season is still in full swing, and former US youth international joins New England. FC Dallas dismantled San Jose in an impressive 5-0 outing last week. But, I won't talk about them. As much as I want to, I'll leave that to everyone else here on Big D. Let's take a look at what else is going on around MLS. Joao Plata The smallest player in MLS is standing tall. Possibly the hottest striker in MLS at the moment (other than Tesho Akindele), Plata has scored 11 goals and notched five assists in only 18 appearances for Real Salt Lake. Even...

RSL “really up for” game with Sounders

Here’s some of what RSL had to say today after taking a 2-1 win from the Sounders and passing them in the MLS standings: Real Salt Lake Head Coach Jeff Cassar On where the club would be without FW Joao Plata: “I think the team would be in a similar position. Obviously, it’s not about one individual, for sure, but Joao [Plata] is playing at an extremely high level every game. He’s being consistent. Obviously, I love balls going in the back of the net, but I appreciate his work on the defensive side as well. Whether it’s … Read more »

Goal Breakdown: Joao Plata scores with his head to open game against D.C. United

Joao Plata scored perhaps the first headed goal of his career (maybe — I haven't checked, but we can be dead certain he didn't score one in such a spectacular way in any other Real Salt Lake game) last weekend, and as we ease out of the celebrations around beating D.C. United, it seemed as good a time as any to break down that goal. You'll note that this is in the buildup to the play that led to the goal, not that play itself. That's purposeful: The disruption of marking started here. Joao Plata has dropped into a position between the DC United midfield and defense, while Olmes Garcia...

Is Joao Plata the most efficient scorer in MLS?

Plata has figured out how to finish his chances and is possibly the most efficient finisher in the league. Joao Plata has done an about face in 2014 from his 2013 season. That is not to say that he was not very good in 2013, but his scoring rate was inefficient at best. Plata ended the 2013 season having converted 12% of his shots into goals. In other words, it took him nearly 10 shots to get a goal. That's not very good. That is not to say that he did not have a great season last year. He brought great energy to the club and had eight assists which is very respectable. But 2014 has been...
