Sebastian Jaime will be an important figure in 2015 with formation change, Plata injury

Sebastian Jaime's 2014 season garnered some mixed reviews from across the Real Salt Lake base — despite producing some very strong performances. The primary complaint seemed to rest on his lack of goalscoring, which really, wasn't all that surprising. Midseason additions are rarely hot, goalscoring figures, especially not when they only play six matches (starting only three of those). What we did see was a player with strong technical skill, speed, and strength — he ticks all the boxes we need for a forward to complement players like Joao Plata or Alvaro Saborio, which speaks to the...

RSL's designated players, and why Plata contract indicates a shift in status

When Real Salt Lake signed Joao Plata to a new long-term deal that made him a Young Designated Player under MLS roster rules, it indicated a shift in the makeup of our roster as it conforms to MLS rules. Plata, 22, qualifies for the designated player rule under a specification for players 23 and younger. According to 2014 roster rules — and we say this knowing that things could change in 2015 — a designated player from 21 to 23 has a salary cap charge of $200,000, placing them at just over half the hit of an older designated player. We know from this that Plata's new salary combined...

Four players that could get early chances after Plata injury

Looking toward the start of the 2015 regular season, it's become increasingly apparent that we'll need to look at our forward corps with increasing amounts of scrutiny. With Joao Plata facing a three to four month absence after a successful surgery to repair a broken fifth metatarsal, the day-one lineup certainly won't include his sprightly play. It's a blow to Real Salt Lake's plans, especially with talk of a three-forward lineup, but it's also a chance for some players to step into more prominent positions. While Sebastian Jaime and Alvaro Saborio are basically certain-starters, we'll...

Major Link Soccer: Sounders working on new lease

Also, Joao Plata just got a raise, but will be taking an unwanted vacation along with it. Seattle It doesn't look like the Sounders are going to be getting any new turf in 2015, but they may be getting a new lease that improves the turf replacement process. Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman speaks the truth. Whether or not you believe his "conflict of interests" comments about Roger Goodell and Robert Kraft, it's certainly true that Sherman's comments reflect a greater distrust in the NFL. MLS The soccer gods have acted ambiguously concerning the future of Joao Plata. On one...

Monday Roundup: TV deals, Plata, the Monarchs stadium and everything else

Alright, it's confession time. I almost forgot about the Monday roundup. Maybe it was that Monday started off with news streaming from the rosters, with three big news items coming out in quick succession. And since that was probably it, let's start with those first. You probably already know, but in case you don't: Joao Plata has a fractured fifth metatarsal. The injury took place in the first training session of the season. Item number two: Joao Plata has officially agreed a new deal with Real Salt Lake. Dell Loy Hansen has said before that it's a five-year deal, and the acquisition cost...

On back of injury, RSL announces new Plata deal finalized, will be young designated player

The news around Joao Plata today has been — shall we say — mixed. It was revealed by Real Salt Lake today that Plata suffered a fifth-metatarsal fracture, and that could see him miss three to four months of action. But in decidedly more positive news, the club also confirmed that he's signed a new contract — one that will make him a young designated player because of acquisition cost. It's difficult to say who has stepped down from a designated player spot this season, given current roster rules (subject to change, certainly, especially given the probability that a new collective...

Joao Plata suffers fractured fifth metatarsal in first training session, out 3-4 months

Joao Plata, Real Salt Lake goalscorer and one of the vital players to last season's campaign, is set for a 3-to-4 month after suffering a fracture of his fifth metatarsal during Sunday's open training session, according to reports from Salt Lake Tribune reporter Chris Kamrani. Plata suffered an injury of indeterminate magnitude at the training session, which took place at the Soccer City complex in Draper, Utah, on artificial turf. Plata will undergo surgery today. He's one of several players in recent memory to suffer from the same issue: Alvaro Saborio, Chris Schuler, Devon Sandoval, and...

Tales from the Draft: The best and worst of Real Salt Lake's draft history

Remember when Real Salt Lake got Joao Plata for a second-round draft pick? Or Luis Gil for one of those, too? Or how about when our first-ever pick — the first in the 2005 SuperDraft — didn't make it at the club or in MLS? We're profiling some of the best stories around the draft since our inception. In January 2013, Real Salt Lake took their second-round draft pick in 2015 and handed it to Toronto FC in exchange for one player who, to that point, hadn't met the expectations hoisted upon him. It wasn't really Joao Plata's fault -- at least not entirely -- that Toronto FC wasn't the...

Tales from the Draft: When RSL got Joao Plata in exchange for a 2015 second-round pick

In January 2013, Real Salt Lake took their second-round draft pick in 2015 and handed it to Toronto FC in exchange for one player who, to that point, hadn't met the expectations hoisted upon him. It wasn't really Joao Plata's fault -- at least not entirely -- that Toronto FC wasn't the place for him. He'd been bouncing around between Ecuador (LDU Quito, to be precise) and Toronto, and he never really found his feet there. He was a young player, and it was his first time at a foreign club. It can't have been easy. Anyway, that second round draft pick? We're more than happy to see the back of...
