Black And Red United Despite the result, I think that the lineup template that Ben Olsen put out in the game against Sporting Kansas City is the right formation for D.C. United right now. Injuries to Marcelo Saragosa, Lewis Neal, and John Thorrington forced Olsen to play Raphael Augusto, and his performance in the first half left me wanting more. If he can take that performance and string it out over the course of an entire game, he could really be that number 8 that we want beside Perry Kitchen. With the (hopeful) return of Dwayne De Rosario, someone has to be relegated to the bench. I, like many of you,...

Black And Red United We'll get a chance to see how D.C. United copes with some early-season adversity this year. After losing Dwayne De Rosario for this first two games of the season due to a suspension and watching John Thorrington suffer a long-term injury just as he was starting to round into form, United received some more bad news today. Midfielder Nick DeLeon fell victim to a grade-two hamstring strain and is expected to miss the next six weeks. DeLeon's injury occurred in the 31st minute of Saturday's 2-1 loss to the Columbus Crew at RFK Stadium. When DeLeon came off the field on Saturday, he was re...

Black And Red United We knew it would happen sooner or later, John Thorrington was always going to miss some time this year due to injury. It just happened to be "sooner." Thorrington will miss the next 8-12 weeks with an injury very similar to the one that sidelined Dwayne De Rosario for the last 2+ months of last season, a severely sprained MCL, suffered during a sliding challenge with RSL forward Alvaro Saborio. Thorrington was the direct replacement for De Rosario - who served a suspension for violent conduct for the first two games of the year - in the season-opener in Houston, a role he is not site f...

Black And Red United For all our talk about the missing pieces in D.C. United's lineup this off-season, we've said the name John Thorrington surprisingly little. The South African was acquired by the Black-and-Red during this winter's Re-Entry Draft/Mechanism/Doodad/Thing when his option was declined by the Vancouver Whitecaps. Thorrington has been capped by the USMNT, though only four times, non since 2008, and seems to be well-respected by players in MLS. He's got the defensive ability to keep the midfield solid if paired with Perry Kitchen, and he's got the attacking chops to help the offense keep from ...
