Depth Assessment: Despite struggles, squad depth offers encouragement

RSL Soapbox — We've seen enough matches now - with enough of a variety in squad - to really start to assess our depth, even if there is a certain amount of prematurity to it owing to the inexperience of several players within the system. Goalkeepers: ANick Rimando, Josh Saunders, Jeff Attinella, Lalo Fernandez Our quartet of keepers is perhaps the best in the league, and this is largely because of the addition of Josh Saunders. This isn't to say that Attinella and Fernandez aren't quality, or that they won't be top players in a few years, but they're certainly not here yet. Saunders has only played ...

Player Ratings: RSL Reserves 1-0 LA Galaxy

RSL SoapboxJosh Saunders: 7 ... Saunders didn't have much to do, but was good in the air to pick out crosses and prevent dangerous play from developing. He did well to keep a young back line focused and organized, though they certainly helped in that regard. Match Report: RSL Reserves the victor in 1-0 defeat of LA Galaxy Rich Balchan: — ... Balchan didn't stay on the pitch long enough for a verdict to be reached after injuring his shoulder during a fall early on. (SUB) Jordan Allen: 7.5 ... Allen was at the center of repeated attacks for RSL, and he spread play very effectively. Importantly, h...

State of the Squad: After four matches, depth shows through

RSL Soapbox — After four matches, we can finally start to evaluate how exactly our depth is faring thus far; given we just played a match in which we were missing approximately 1,374 players, it's been made even more relevant and/or possible. Goalkeeper: Rimando, Saunders, Attinella, Fernandez. Nick Rimando is tried and true and will be our first-choice goalkeeper for the foreseeable future. Josh Saunders showed quite well but made a pretty crucial error on Saturday, but he's owned up to it and showed some real stability. We've yet to see much from the other two yet. Central defense: Borchers, Schul...

Player Ratings: FC Dallas 2-0 Real Salt Lake

RSL SoapboxJosh Saunders - 5.5 Saunders had a bit of rust on him, and that is forgivable as a backup GK. The first goal was tough to save. It was well taken and it's not like Saunders was out of position or anything. For the second goal, you can assign some of the blame to Saunders but not all of it. Maybe 1/3rd of the blame. I would assign just as much responsibility to Palmer for not just clearing the ball when he had a pesky forward breathing down his neck. The rest of the blame is on that pesky forward, Jackson. Lovel Palmer - 4.5 In my humble opinion, most of the blame for both goals could b...

Depth Chart: RSL squad nears final look as season rushes into view

RSL Soapbox — Goalkeepers (4) Nick Rimando, Josh Saunders*, Jeff Attinella, Lalo Fernandez The potential addition of Josh Saunders plumps up the goalkeeping ranks to something stronger than we've seen in some time. There's no doubt that Saunders is a good option to have, really, and if he wants to be here and not necessarily playing every week, we'll be happy to have him. Defenders (9) Central: Nat Borchers, Chris Schuler, Kwame Watson-Siriboe, Aaron Maund, Carlos Salcedo Right back: Tony Beltran, Lovel Palmer Left back: Chris Wingert, Kenny Mansally How exactly this look shifts and changes throug...

Opportunity, nervousness add up for potential Saunders signing

RSL SoapboxJosh Saunders arriving for Real Salt Lake's preseason training surprised nearly everyone, and the response since has been understandably varied. Saunders, of course, comes from LA Galaxy — that provokes some negative reactions — and isn't rated by some — provoking further reactions — and doesn't represent a true challenge to Nick Rimando's "throne," as it were. Those three concerns, among others, are particularly interesting. Reaction from the Real Salt Lake staff has been largely positive, but indications he could sign have been few until recently. Yesterday, during an ESPN700 intervi...
