Soccer Insider: D.C. United visits depleted Seattle Sounders

Tempting as it is, D.C. United Coach Ben Olsen and his road-weary players will not take much comfort from the Seattle Sounders’ depleted roster ahead of Friday’s match at CenturyLink Field.Forwards Clint Dempsey and Obafemi Martins, who have combined for 14 of the club’s 24 goals, are not available. Neither is defender Brad Evans and midfielder Marco Pappa, second on Seattle in assists. Osvaldo Alonso, the stalwart defensive midfielder, is questionable with a bum hamstring.Read full article >>

Sounders Lineups- Chad Barrett to build a bonfire

Still no Alonso but Barrett and Lamar Neagle are paired up top. Brad Evans is back before going to the gold cup. Chad Barrett and Lamar Neagle will start up top and look to set fire to this weakened Timbers backline. Still no Osvaldo Alonso in this one as Michael Azira and Gonzalo Pineda start together in the middle of the park. Andy Rose and Marco Pappa will facilitate the attack from the wings as we've seen in about half of the matches this season. The backline sees one change from the one the typical shutout line with Oniel Fisher starting at LB tonight, instead of RB like he did in...

Sounders go very young with ramshackle lineup

The big-name absences were well known. We knew Clint Dempsey, Obafemi Martins and Osvaldo Alonso were out. We suspected Brad Evans and Chad Barrett were doubtful. But still seeing the Seattle Sounders lineup for Wednesday's match against the Philadelphia Union was a bit shocking. Andddd your @SoundersFC XI for #PHIvSEA: Frei Fisher Ockford Scott - C Remick Azira Pineda Roldan Pappa Kovar Neagle — Sounders Matchday (@LIVESounders) June 24, 2015 Bench: Perkins (1), Mears (4), Marshall (14), Rose (5), Thomàs (18), Jones (17), Mansaray (80) #PHIvSEA — Sounders Matchday...

Marco Pappa called up by Guatemala for Gold Cup

As expected, the Sounders will be down one more starter during most of July. Marco Pappa is a mainstay on Guatemala's national team, so it comes as no surprise, but he indeed made the final roster for his home country for the upcoming Gold Cup. Brad Evans, Clint Dempsey and now Marco Pappa are confirmed as the three roster casualties for the Sounders, and, depending on how the squads fare, Sounder FC could be without the trio until the August 1 match against the Vancouver Whitecaps. Guatemala is scheduled to face Trinidad, Mexico and Cuba in the first stage of the CONCACAF competition, and...

Marco Pappa will miss FC Dallas match for World Cup qualifying

Pappa is coming off some of his strongest Sounders performances. The 2018 World Cup may be nearly three years away, but CONCACAF's qualifying is already well underway and taking a toll on the Seattle Sounders roster. Marco Pappa will lead Guatemala into a pair of matches against Bermuda on Friday and Monday, meaning he won't be available for Saturday's Sounders match against FC Dallas. Pappa is Guatemala's top offensive player and one of their most experienced, claiming 10 goals and 44 caps. Four of those goals came in last year's Copa Centroamericana in which he led Guatemala to a...

Marco Pappa named to Guatemala's provisional Gold Cup roster

Sounders could be without their midfielder for a few weeks in July. The Sounders already had two players named the provisional Gold Cup roster for the USA with Clint Dempsey and Brad Evans and now Marco Pappa will likely be leaving for the Gold Cup. Guatemala released their 35-man roster minutes after we learned about Deuce, Evans, and Jordan Morris, and as expected Marco Pappa will be called upon to run the Guatemalan attack. Pappa has become a standard in national team games for Guatemala and the Gold Cup will be no different. While being on the provisional roster does not guarantee a...

Marco Pappa had one of the best passes of the year

Marco Pappa was a boss against Sporting Kansas City. The Seattle Sounders midfielder appeared to take the absences of Clint Dempsey, Obafemi Martins and others as an opportunity to step up his game. Pappa had two good looks on goal himself, had a bunch of dangerous set pieces and totally deserved an assist on Lamar Neagle's incorrectly disallowed goal. But Pappa's best moment was this: This @marcopappas16 pass, tho. pic.twitter.com/uT3fzPOxR7 — Jeremiah Oshan (@JeremiahOshan) June 7, 2015 Nothing to see here, really, except for Pappa flicking a bouncing ball with the side of his foot...

Lamar Neagle has goal incorrectly called back

It looked like Lamar Neagle had finally finished one of his numerous chances. But it was apparently too good to be true. Just as he expertly redirected Marco Pappa's cross into the back of the net, the offside flag went up. Replay sure looks like Neagle was on. pic.twitter.com/ud3i1Tw5Sc — Sounder At Heart (@sounderatheart) June 7, 2015 That's a tough break as Neagle appears to have timed his run perfectly, looking even with the second-to-last defender when Pappa unleashed his pass. Not only that, but he also appears to have been behind the ball when Pappa struck it.

Pappa wins MLS Goal of the Week, Frei nabs Save of the Week

Sounders grabbed six points in two matches, and now they add Goal and Save of the Week to a tidy list of accomplishments in this round. Marco Pappa scored his first goal of the season with a beautiful right-foot chip from the top of the box against Colorado, and now he is being recognized with MLS Goal of the Week. The win marks the Sounders 4th win in 13 weeks, but the first by a non-Clintafemi player. Sounders lead the league when it comes to goals scored (20) and Goal of the Week awards (4), with the next closest teams Real Salt Lake and Sporting Kansas City having two each. Pappa took...
