Major Link Soccer: All Star Picks, Bag Checks

Sounder At Heart — In a month and a half, the best(ish) of MLS will face perpetual Italian stalwarts (and future MLS side?) AS Roma in the MLS All-Star Game. Among those (eligible) who seem to have some support are Michael Gspurning, DeAndre Yedlin, Osvaldo Alonso, and Djimi Traore. All worthy choices, though certain absences are still noticeable. While not a candidate, Servando Carrasco has become a key piece of the Sounders starting lineup. The United States' most popular sports league has instituted a change that could very well be coming to other leagues in the near future. Now, normal bags and purse...

Fan voting opens for MLS All-Star Game

Sounders FC Blog | Seattle Times — Six Sounders FC players are on the fan ballot for the 2013 MLS All-Star Game: GK Michael Gspurning D Djimi Traore D DeAndre Yedlin M Osvaldo Alonso M Mauro Rosales F Eddie Johnson The notable omissions for the Sounders appear be forwards Lamar Neagle and Obafemi Martins, as well as midfielder Brad Evans, but the ballots were determined by media selections several weeks ago. Here's coach Sigi Schmid on the All-Star process: “If you’re doing well, people are looking at why you’re doing well, who’s playing well, who’s having an impact, who’s helping the team perform. When  you’re not doing well,...

Tactics Analyst: Michael Gspurning vs. Count Dracula

Sounder At Heart — A big indicator of success in Major League Soccer for goalkeepers is how well they deal with crosses and aerial challenges. It's one of the reasons I was never cut out to be an MLS player: I just didn't have good enough command of my penalty area. It looks simple enough — just reach over an attacker's head and grab the ball; you've got hands, he doesn't. But in reality, crosses are about making several split-second decisions in quick succession, and the longer you wait, the worse your odds are of coming out on top. Key points The basic aspects of claiming a cross are, in order: Prope...

Mauro Rosales: 'Today we did everything wrong.'

Sounders FC Blog | Seattle Times — Here is some postgame reaction from some of the Sounders FC players after Sunday's 4-0 road loss to the Los Angeles Galaxy at The Home Depot Center... *      *      * MICHAEL GSPURNING, goalkeeper* (What happened tonight?) "That was the most shameful first half since I've been here. Four goals in one half is absolutely unacceptable. We were so bad that we just had a nice friendly in the second half -- that's not possible. We all know that everybody makes mistakes and we have to stay together as a group. It's not time to point fingers. Everybody is part of the team and we completely got crushed...

Nos Audietis, Episode 91: Featuring Michael Gspurning

Sounder At Heart — Finally we get to do a show following a victory. The Seattle Sounders didn't look their best against the Colorado Rapids, but they still managed to pull out a 1-0 victory. The highlight of the match was probably Obafemi Martins scoring his first goal, as well as the defense picking up its second straight shutout. Dave Clark joins Jeremiah and Aaron on the show this week, and he provides his own insight on the game. Among the discussion points are the play of Martins, the growing position battle between Lamar Neagle and Steve Zakuani and the upcoming stretch of matches. This week's gues...

Monday notes: the Sounders are winning, and the sun is shining

Sounders FC Blog | Seattle Times — Here are some quick notes from Sounders FC practice Monday: *     *     * --- Goalkeeper Michael Gspurning said it would've been a long two weeks if the Sounders hadn't have won Saturday in Colorado. So did he see any change in practice after the first win? "It was more fun, more smiling faces here, of course," he said. "You feel a lot of pressure is now away from the team." --- And then Gspurning got poetic: "The weather was just waiting for the first win, I think. There were no clouds today. At the moment, it's very sunny in Seattle." Meant literally and figuratively, in case that wasn't obv...

A stop and chat with goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann before he starts Tuesday's CCL game

Sounders FC Blog | Seattle Times — Sounders FC's starting goalkeeper, Michael Gspurning, won't be available for Tuesday's start to a CONCACAF Champions League semifinal against Mexico's Santos Laguna. The news was covered last week, when it was revealed Gspurning received his second yellow card of the tournament in a quarterfinal game against Tigres UANL -- and thus an automatic one-game suspension. That means Seattle native Marcus Hahnemann (right) will get the call in Tuesday's big game. Reporters got a chance to catch up with the veteran after Monday's practice, and here is a transcript: *     *     * (How are you feeling g...

Gspurning sits after too many yellows

Gspurning out of next CCL match, other practice notes

Sounder At Heart — Yesterday's weekly notes from Seattle Sounders FC said that Michael Gspurning earned his second yellow card (he is listed with two on official tournament site) of the current CONCACAF Champions League cycle and will miss the first leg against Santos Laguna. If you are surprised by this don't worry, most everyone is - including Sigi Schmid. "It was a little unclear because normally Yellow Cards wipe clean after the Group Stage. CONCACAF has a rule that it wipes clean after the Quarterfinal Stage," Schmid said to the media after Tuesday's practice session. After explaining that it is an ...

Michael Gspurning suspended for first leg of CCL semifinals against Santos Laguna

Sounders FC Blog | Seattle Times — *     *     * There was a surprise, and not a good one, in Sounders FC's weekly notes package. Goalkeeper Michael Gspurning actually picked up a yellow card for delaying the game in the 86th of the second leg in the CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinal win against Mexico's Tigres UANL. The caution wasn't listed in the postgame stat sheet, and I missed it watching in live action. That gives Gspurning two yellow cards in the tournament -- he got one in a Sept. 19 group-stage game against CD Marathon of Honduras -- and, thus, a one-game suspension. Here is rule 6.29 in the CCL rulebook: Any pla...

Sounders fall to Chris Wondolowski strike

Sounder At Heart — Seattle Sounders FC falls to 0-2-1 -2 GD after a Saturday night loss to the San Jose Earthquakes. It was one of their five shots from outside the box that Chris Wondolowski deftly slotted past Michael Gspurning, but it was the only one that will matter. Seattle would take nine shots from outside the box, only two on target and none would reach the net. There were many problems for the Sounders. It was one of the rare times with Osvaldo Alonso playing that they lost the 50/50 battle. But it was also a night on which they depended even more than usual on open play crosses. Unlike 2012 th...

Mere days before the opening kick, those on hand were presented with each a Rave Green and Shale option, just as last year.
