Sounder At Heart Injuries plagued the Seattle Sounders' starting 11 against the Philadelphia Union on Saturday despite nearly two weeks since their last league game. Osvaldo Alonso and Shalrie Joseph were the most conspicuous absences. The formation was familiar, but Brad Evans and Servando Carrasco couldn't keep control of the game as well as Alonso and Joseph have shown this season. Lamar Neagle dropped into midfield often to find the ball as a result, leaving Eddie Johnson to fend for himself up top. Philadelphia had a similar look — and similar problems — in its 4-4-2 with one holding midfielder. B...

Brotherly Game First Half Despite missing Obafemi Martins (knee), Shalrie Joseph (hamstring), Steve Zakuani (groin) and Osvaldo Alonso (birth of daughter), the Seattle Sounders certainly did not look like a depleted team early. In the tenth minute, the always explosive Eddie Johnson scored on a corner kick service from Mauro Rosales, and Seattle were up 1-0. Johnson found himself all alone in the middle of the box, as Amobi Okugo lost his assignment. The tide would begin to turn midway through the first half, with Philadelphia spending a lot of time in the final third. The Union found woodwork twice,...

Sounder At Heart The primary non-game related storylines are that Shalrie Joseph is facing the team with which he was one of the best midfielders to take the pitch in MLS. This is also the first match that Kevin Alston will miss while he steps aside and receives treatment for cancer. That is a much bigger tale than soccer. We of course wish Alston the best. He is one of us. On the field the match will be determined, as all have been for Seattle so far, by finishing. The Sounders are struggling in the finishing department. There are lineup questions and a shift in defensive tactics as well. Since the cl...

Sounder At Heart It is a basement battle as the Eastern Conference bottom fish travel west to take in their rare visit to CenturyLink Field. The 1 PM match is on KONG 6/16 (KIRO FM radio) as well as usual Spanish language TV and Radio. Enjoy the last home game for nearly a month as Shalrie Joseph plays against his old side. As the Seattle Sounders sit with zero points they get their best opportunity for a win when they take on the New England Revolution, another team struggling as the season begins. Amid injuries and fitness the lineup for Seattle is in question. This is also true for the Revolution, b...

Sounder At Heart After a week with a roster depleted by injury and national team calls Sigi Schmid may get to pick an ideal XI based solely off of form and tactics when the Sounders travel to face Real Salt Lake on Saturday. Both Brad Evans and Shalrie Joseph returned to full training today, with Tuesday's training being major test in how healthy they will be through the week. "Always when you go through the practice you feel OK during practice and afterwards you are going to say ‘I'm fine' but the thing is how do you feel after you rest, go home and the next morning," Sigi told the media after Monday'...

Seattle Sounders FC March 21, 2013Sounders FC Blog | Seattle Times I had meant to get to these notes earlier, but better late than never... --- It looks like everyone in camp was a participant in Tuesday's warmups for the Sounders, which is a good sign in the recoveries of Brad Evans (calf strain), Patrick Ianni (foot fracture), Shalrie Joseph (calf strain) and unsigned rookie Will Bates (knee surgery). --- Once drills got going in earnest, those guys trained off to the side. He had been with Philadelphia after being was drafted by the Union in the second round of the 2013 MLS SuperDraft. "He was a guy that we liked at our combine," coach Sigi Schmid told reporters after Wednesday's preseason game.
