Easy road win? Why FC Dallas isn't taking upcoming match vs. struggling Toronto FC for granted

Easy road win? Why FC Dallas isn't taking upcoming match vs. struggling Toronto FC for granted

Look at the MLS standings, and FC Dallas' trip to face Toronto FC this weekend looks like exactly the kind of match in which the club could come back with a rare away win. TFC sits ninth in the Eastern Conference and has just 10 points from its 10 matches, having lost six.FCD, on the other hand, has lost just once this season and has 17 points from its 10 matches. The standings tell only part of the story, though. Toronto reached the final of the CONCACAF Champions League, falling to Chivas on penalties. It's also a team that has been hit hard by injuries early in the season. Forward Jozy...

FC Dallas & NTX Rayados learn 2018 US Open Cup 4th Round opponents

FC Dallas & NTX Rayados learn 2018 US Open Cup 4th Round opponents

Two-time US Open Cup winners FC Dallas and local amateur side NTX Rayados had something in common today, both advanced to the 4th round of the 2018 US Open Cup and were placed in the same geographical draw group along with Houston Dynamo (MLS) and San Antonio FC (USL).That meant going into the draw, FC Dallas and Rayados had a 50% chance of drawing each other as 3rd Round winners, including Rayados, must face an MLS team.Unfortunately for local fans, the Dallas dream matchup didn't happen. Instead, NTX Rayados, who did not apply to host a 4th Round game, were drawn as the road team again the...

FC Dallas Practice Observations: May 23

FC Dallas training has moved up again, this week it's been starting at 8:30 in the morning, up from 9. That's common for FCD over the course of the season. In the winter training starts at 10, as the days get hotter it moves up and up. It's only 78 degrees when the session starts this morning but is almost 90 by the time it ends.Training was also different today because it took place on field 8. The normal training ground, field 1, is being converted from winter grass to summer grass. Bermuda is the new grass going in I'm told. The same thing is also happening in the main stadium right now.I...

Maxi Urruti's evolution in FC Dallas

Maximiliano Urruti received a pass from Mauro Díaz with his back on the area's edge, securing the ball. He aimed his right leg and solidly kicked the ball mid-height to the first pole for a score. The DC Dallas forward is reaching one of the goals he set for himself at the start of the season: improving his game with his back against the goal and trying to score more.Urruti's score, considered by the MLS one of the best of the week, put the scoreboard in motion Saturday in DC Fallas' 3-2 win over the Los Angeles Galaxy at Toyota Stadium in Frisco."I think until recently I was working more...

'They can't handle the heat': How brutal Texas summers give FC Dallas an upper hand over its opponents

'They can't handle the heat': How brutal Texas summers give FC Dallas an upper hand over its opponents

FCD's training sessions continue to edge earlier and earlier into the morning as temperatures in Frisco go higher and higher. Though the team is traveling Wednesday ahead of Friday's match against Toronto FC, players already are hoping their bodies begin adjusting to the heat, which can give them the edge in future matches at Toyota Stadium."It's definitely something we're used to. Every summer in Texas gets brutal," defender-midfielder Ryan Hollingshead said. "We train at a good time in the morning and make sure we get in as cold as it can be throughout the day. But it's huge for us because...

Mauro Rosales trains with FC Dallas before returning for final professional season in Argentina

Mauro Rosales was back in training with FC Dallas this week, but the 37-year-old made it clear he's just stopping by."I'm passing through before returning to Argentina. I'm going to play my last season as a professional in Argentina," he said. "I've been training with Vancouver up to now and I was going to stay until the end of the year but now the transfer market is opening and everything, so I want to get there in Argentina to see what I can do."The midfielder, who helped FCD win the Supporters' Shield and U.S. Open Cup in 2016, said FCD's coaching staff welcomed him with open arms when he...

How FC Dallas' Reggie Cannon proved he deserves more scoring opportunities

How FC Dallas' Reggie Cannon proved he deserves more scoring opportunities

Reggie Cannon ended up frustrated after his debut MLS goal came in a match that ended 2-2. The FC Dallas right back couldn't shake the disappointment that his debut goal came in a match during which the team let a two-goal lead slip away. The good news for FCD fans is it may not take much more time for Cannon to find the back of the net once again. After encouraging the 19-year-old to focus on defending for the first quarter of the season, FC Dallas coach Oscar Pareja says he's more and more comfortable with the right back pushing up to join the attack."It has been good," Pareja said of the...

Academy players FC Dallas should sign to homegrown and USL deals

With the news that FC Dallas is finally bringing in a USL team, subsequently identified as a USL III team, I thought it might be worth discussing who FC Dallas might target to sign from their Academy as MLS homegrowns or to the USL.Now I'm very aware there are a LOT of names here on this list. But we are talking about stocking an entire USL III team. The U19s alone may provide a handful of players for that process. But I'm also listing here players that might be signed as homegrowns or USL players over the next two or three seasons. As you read this, you may also wonder why I'm talking about...

What FC Dallas' future USL team might look like

What FC Dallas' future USL team might look like

Last week at training, FC Dallas Head Coach Oscar Pareja mentioned the upcoming USL team the club is going to field. While it's not exactly been a secret (I've literally had about five different front office people mention it in passing, including Technical Director Fernando Clavijo with whom I've talked to about it quite a bit) this was the first mention in front of a microphone.Much remains to be determined about an FC Dallas USL team. Questions about a name, colors, kits, stadium venue, and even which league the team will play in, USL or USLD3, have yet to be answered. But in the meantime,...

The Breakdown: Vancouver Whitecaps at FC Dallas

The Breakdown: Vancouver Whitecaps at FC Dallas

FC Dallas hosted fellow Western Conference playoff contender Vancouver Whitecaps at Toyota Stadium in Frisco on Saturday. But despite overall strong play, things didn't go as planned for FCD as they allowed the Caps to come back and tie the game in absurd fashion. If ever a home tie felt like a loss, it was this one. This was a game full of interesting tactics form FCD. Let's break it down.Formation and TacticsFor the first 30 minutes, FC Dallas was in their most common 4-2-3-1 formation. With Reto Ziegler out for a game due to his red card against LA Galaxy, Maynor Figueroa slotted in at...

FC Dallas loans Brandon Servania to Tulsa Roughnecks

FC Dallas has loaned homegrown signing Brandon Servania to the Tulsa Roughnecks. Servania was made immediately available for Tulsa and started in Saturday night's match in San Antonio. Sevania, wearing #81, played the full 90 minutes as a deep midfielder in Tulsa's 4-2-3-1 formation.Servania was signed this preseason by FC Dallas after his freshman year at Wake Forest where he started 20 games. Servania has been excelling in FCD training and really pushing for playing time. This loan deal should get Servania the high-level action he needs to continue his development. Here are the Tulsa vs...

Why FC Dallas coach Oscar Pareja says some circumstances were unfair in draw against Vancouver

FRISCO -- A stoppage-time penalty kick from Kei Kamara earned the Vancouver Whitecaps a 2-2 draw against FC Dallas, adding another draw to a list of home stalemates the club already feels is too long.In the 98th minute, FC Dallas goalkeeper Jimmy Maurer came for a ball over the top. It escaped his grasp and an attempted clearance by a defender headed for Whitecaps forward Anthony Blondell. Maurer ran toward the Venezuelan forward, whose header was off-target, but took him out with his follow-through. Referee Ted Unkel pointed to the spot with Kamara stepping up to convert the equalizer in the...

Jimmy Maurer earns spot as FC Dallas' starting goalkeeper ... just don't tell him that

Jimmy Maurer has arrived. After starring for South Carolina in college, the goalkeeper had a series of near misses earning a job in a first division. He signed an emergency contract with the New York Red Bulls in 2011 but wasn't needed. The next year, he headed to Chile but ultimately played just 65 league minutes for Universidad de Concepcion. Eventually he latched on with the New York Cosmos, starting for the NASL side from 2014 until the league went on hiatus after the 2017 season.Maurer signed with FCD in the winter. Not only is he staying on an MLS roster, he has won the starting job from...
