Already a playoff lock, FC Dallas isn't taking it easy: 'We have ... the possibility in our hands to control our destiny'

FRISCO -- With two matches left in the MLS regular season, the math can get a little complicated as teams try to figure out what they need to happen to get their preferred playoff seed - or get into the postseason at all. FC Dallas knows it will be playing on and now has its sights set on finishing atop the Western Conference. With a one point lead atop the table, FCD isn't doing any calculations ahead of Sunday's showdown with second-place Sporting Kansas City. "I think it's quite simple. It's the final of the conference, so we're going to approach it like that," center back Reto Ziegler...

Outside The Box: Week 33 in the world of Soccer

They grow up so fast! Reggie Cannon, who had just one MLS minute to his name prior to this year, made his US Men's National Team debut last night. If you want to read a little more about his year, I covered it for MLSsoccer.com and let his own words do the talking right here at Third Degree.Lightning Strikes TwiceThe fastest man on earth, Usain Bolt, had a make or break moment as he stepped on to the field for the only time with the Central Coast Mariners' first team in a friendly as his trial period expired with the Aussie team. The eight-time Olympic gold medalist moved from his usual right...

FC Dallas notebook: How coach Oscar Pareja is trying to solve his team's scoring troubles

FC Dallas notebook: How coach Oscar Pareja is trying to solve his team's scoring troubles

FC Dallas took 19 shots to D.C. United's 14, put six on target to DCU's three but scored zero goals to DCU's one on Saturday, dropping a result despite creating more chances than the home side. That's how soccer goes, of course, but the team is spending this week working on finishing to make sure the same thing doesn't happen against conference rival Sporting Kansas City on Sunday."I think that there's a bit of worry. We know that goals are what win the games and if those of us up front, the forwards, aren't scoring, who is going to?" said Michael Barrios, who played as a lone forward at the...

Michael Barrios has been a constant for a FC Dallas roster in flux this season

Michael Barrios has been a constant for a FC Dallas roster in flux this season

Through twists and turns, new arrivals and trades, injuries and international absences, FC Dallas has had a constant this season: Michael Barrios. The winger is on pace to play in every match this season, which would remarkably match the 34 games he played in last season as well. The year before he played in 32, missing only a pair of matches. Only Chris Wondolowski, whose San Jose Earthquakes have played one more game than FCD at this stage of the season, has a longer active streak in MLS than Barrios' 83 straight appearances."I think it's a reflection of the work I put in all week, the time...

FC Dallas Roster Ranking: October 12, 2018

Playoffs secured and a chance at a third 60-point season in four years. It's been a good week for FC Dallas, as the team had a few international call-ups and some USL honors too. Unfortunately, we did see Cristian Colman sustain a season-ending ACL injury last Tuesday, which means he's off the list for the remainder of the year. Let's get down to it.Starting XI1 - Reggie Cannon (+3) He may not call himself a member of the USMNT just yet, but we will. Add to that 7th in MLS' 22 Under 22, what should have been a penalty in the first minute of last week's game, then earning the free kick that...

Let's talk about the FCDTV Network

One of the best off the field developments this season has been the creation of the FCDTV Network. The FCDTV Network consists of seven over-the-air TV stations, so far, that are carrying FC Dallas games in DFW, Amarillo, Bryan-College Station, Lubbock, Tyler, Waco and Wichita Falls. One of the problems with any cable TV deal is cable penetration. Not everyone has cable TV or satellite. Dallas has one of the lower cable TV penetration rates in the nation (AKA a high "broadcast only" market) and those numbers are often dropping due to cord cutting or "alternative delivery systems" (ADS) where...

After Santiago Mosquera scored the opening goal, he and Maxi Urruti held up a Cristian Colman jersey after the striker suffered a season-ending ACL injury in practice last week.Double TroubleSpeaking of grabbing spare jerseys, Carlisle United fans saw double this weekend as both Tom Parkes and Gary Liddle emerged from the tunnel in Parkes' shirts. FC Dallas' Oscar Pareja wants better coordination between FIFA and MLS schedules

FC Dallas' Oscar Pareja wants better coordination between FIFA and MLS schedules

While most leagues around the world aren't in action this weekend because of a FIFA international window, when national teams can call up players for matches and clubs must release the players, MLS is continuing on.It's been standard practice for the league as it looks to balance its non-traditional schedule and commercial concerns with the demands of international play. FC Dallas coach Oscar Pareja hasn't seen his team hit as hard by international call-ups this season but said in a perfect world he wouldn't have to cope with the challenges created by playing games during FIFA...
