Derrick White’s rise brings new upside to the Spurs’ present and future

Derrick White’s rise brings new upside to the Spurs’ present and future

The versatile guard is putting together a breakout sophomore season that few people, including his coach, saw coming. The starting point-guard spot in San Antonio has found new stewardship this season in the most Spurs way possible, with one promising 29th overall pick stepping up after a major injury to another. Over the last dozen games, second-year guard Derrick White has averaged 15.1 points, 4.3 rebounds and 3.5 assists, 63.5% from the field and 50% from three, playing a pivotal role in the franchise’s stubborn cling to relevancy after totaling just 139 NBA minutes his rookie...

Spurs take gritty road victory over Timberwolves

Spurs take gritty road victory over Timberwolves

On a DeRozen-less night in Minnesota, the Spurs rose to the challenge and came out on top. Another slow start should have doomed the Spurs to their 15th road loss of the season on Friday night against the Timberwolves. The late scratch of DeMar DeRozan left the team with a starting lineup of Derrick White, Bryn Forbes, Rudy Gay, LaMarcus Aldridge and Pau Gasol. That lineup hadn’t seen the floor for a single minute so far this season and it showed. Fortunately, the Timberwolves didn’t exactly explode out of the gate either, with both squads starting off 1 of 5 from the floor. It...

Derrick White makes manufacturing points look effortless

Derrick White makes manufacturing points look effortless

San Antonio’s young point guard is excelling in setting up easy buckets. The Spurs’ offense looks a little broken right now. Over their last four games, the Spurs are scoring just 107.2 points per 100 possessions, far below their season average of 113.5, and that’s including their offensive explosion against the Thunder. Without Rudy Gay over that period, and with DeMar DeRozan in a slump, the team has struggled to score. In the three of those games that didn’t include outright dominance from LaMarcus Aldridge and what may have been the best team-wide three point shooting night in...

Our community guidelines apply and basically say be cool, no personal attacks, don’t troll and don’t swear too much. Welcome to the game thread. The Spurs played an incredible game against Russell Westbrook and the Thunder on Thursday, but LaMarcus Aldridge’s 56 point offensive explosion assisted by Derrick White’s best game...

Derrick White has become a legitimate two-way player

Derrick White has become a legitimate two-way player

We didn’t see it coming, but maybe we should have. One of the key talents of the San Antonio Spurs organization is the ability to identify players, bring them out of relative obscurity, and turn them into solid rotational pieces on winning teams. Whether searching oversees, among NBA castoffs, or even from G-League tryouts, the Spurs have signed and transformed players from seemingly everywhere. For those who follow the Spurs, their success at finding these players shouldn’t come as a surprise. The Spurs typically look to add high-character players, or as Coach Gregg Popovich likes...

Welcome to the Game Thread. Veterans of the Game Thread know how we do things around here, but for all you newbies we have a few rules. Our community guidelines apply and basically say be cool, no personal attacks, don’t troll and don’t swear too much. Welcome to the game thread. The Spurs had a rough night last night against Memphis, with Davis Bertans getting ejected for muttering something under his breath, and Derrick White picking up 5 fouls for breathing hard on Mike Conley, and having to play short minutes. With Rudy Gay out with a wrist injury, it just wasn’t enough against...

The Grizzlies defense exacerbated the Spurs poor night

The Grizzlies defense exacerbated the Spurs poor night

Sometimes you eat the bear; sometimes the bear eats you The Spurs’ offense was lost in the woods for much of Wednesday night’s game against the Grizzlies. Without Rudy Gay (or Derrick White and Davis Bertans for much of the 2nd half), the team never found its rhythm, scoring just 88.7 points per 100 possessions, their worst output of the season. The first half, in particular, was rough. They struggled to generate open shots, and even when they did, they missed. The Spurs are averaging about 11 open and wide open shots per quarter so far this season, but took only 7 in the first quarter...

Mike Conley put the Spurs young guard through the grinder If you’ve missed the last few games, Derrick White has been quite impressive. Derrick White is shooting 76.2% from the floor in the last five games (17.8 ppg) - highest field goal percentage in a five-game span by a Spur since Artis Gilmore in 1986 (min. 40 attempts).— Jordan Howenstine (@AirlessJordan) January 9, 2019 Derrick White has averaged 20.0 points while shooting 82.8% the last three games.Only other Spur in history to average 20+ while shooting 80+ in a three-game stretch: Gene Banks in 1983.— Jordan Howenstine...

The Spurs brought in the new year with a bang

The Spurs brought in the new year with a bang

Looks like the Spurs New Year’s resolutions involved continuing the solid camaraderie and team building that started with December’s big home stand and has taken them out of the hole they dug through November. After the win over the Boston Celtics, talking about Kawhi Leonard became unavoidable as the anticipation of The Klaw’s return was all anyone in the league could seem to focus on. But just as quickly as the Raptors landed in the Alamo City, they left — and much quieter than they entered. A standout in San Antonio’s last wins has been the impressive play of Derrick White, who...

Spurs Power Rankings - Week 12: Great End and Great Start

The Spurs started 2019 the same way they ended 2018. The San Antonio Spurs had a good week. They are on a four game win streak that displayed their new version “Beautiful Game” offense and improved defense. The guys in silver and black are gaining momentum and steadily making their way up the standings. Anyone else thinking “from good to great” isn’t far behind? Week 12 -New Year, New Spurs: To close out 2018 Derrick White continued his excellent play against one of the top teams in the East. He has shown many levels of improved play on both sides of the ball, putting up a...

Open Thread: Derrick White gets pranked

An old Big 3 tradition is reignited On December 29th, the Spurs exacted a little hurt on the Los Angeles Clippers on their “Redemption Tour”. The fellas were leading with just over a minute left in the game when this happened: Hard to tell from the camera angle, but as Derrick White went to sit down, someone slipped a cup on his seat. Long time Pounders may recall this was a gag between Manu Ginobili and Tim Duncan: Good to know that the “traditions” instilled by the Big 3 aren’t limited to killer basketball. When the Spurs are having fun, we are all having fun. It’s great to...

San Antonio vs. Memphis, Final Score: Spurs hold off pesky Grizzlies for 108-88 win

San Antonio vs. Memphis, Final Score: Spurs hold off pesky Grizzlies for 108-88 win

A big second quarter won this game for the Spurs. It wasn’t always pretty, but the Spurs took care of the Memphis Grizzlies, staving off a late comeback attempt for a 108-88 win. Five Spurs scored in double-figures, led by 19 from Derrick White. Mike Conley had 21 points for Grizzles. The Spurs have now matched their season-high of four-straight wins and move to 23-17, good for sixth in the West. Random Observations The Grizzlies have three former Spurs: Kyle Anderson, Garrett Temple, and JaMychal Green, which is nice, but the Spurs can top it with four former Grizzlies: Pau Gasol,...

Lonnie Walker IV explodes for 34 in his latest G-League game

In assignment for Austin, the rookie went off against the Grizzlies. Lonnie Walker IV is back with the Austin Spurs, and he started today’s game against the Memphis Hustle right where he left off from his NBA debut: with a pull-up three. He would go on to explode for 34 points on 12-22 shooting, including 4-6 from three. While Austin ultimately lost the game 110-97, Walker is continuing to blossom before our eyes. With his growth as well as that of other Spurs youngsters like Derrick White and Bryn Forbes, the future is looking brighter by the day.
