Gordon: Collins acceptance was 'important'

Derrick Gordon, a native of nearby Plainfield, N.J., on Wednesday became the first openly gay player in Division I men’s college basketball. Gordon said seeing Jason Collins come out and then sign with the Brooklyn Nets helped him a lot with his decision to publicly reveal his sexuality. “That was important to me, knowing that sexuality didn’t matter, than the NBA was OK with it,” Gordon said. Jason Collins, the first openly gay basketball player in the NBA and member of the Brooklyn Nets, told Stefan Bondy of the Daily News that so far in his time with the Nets only one opposing player has used "gay taunts" against him. Of course that's one too many, but Collins told Bondy that he didn't want to reveal who the "knucklehead" was because he didn't want to give him any further attention. "One player, one knucklehead from another team," Collins said in an interview with the Daily News. "He's a knucklehead. So I just let it go. Again, that goes back to controlling what you can...
