Hawks John Collins Snubbed, Named to NBA All-Rookie Second Team

In the midst of 2018 NBA Draft prognostication, news broke today via the NBA of what players were named to the All-Rookie teams, and the Hawks John Collins made the Second Team. We have campaigned heavily for JC to be named to the first team, but the Hawks young big man was lacking the counting […] Hawks John Collins Snubbed, Named to NBA All-Rookie Second Team - Soaring Down South - Soaring Down South - An Atlanta Hawks blog

John Collins selected to NBA All-Rookie second team

John Collins selected to NBA All-Rookie second team

An honor for the first-year big man. John Collins enjoyed a tremendous rookie season for the Atlanta Hawks and, at this point, it is safe to proclaim GM Travis Schlenk’s first draft pick as a success. To that end, the NBA announced its 2017-2018 All-Rookie teams on Tuesday afternoon and, unsurprisingly, the first-year big man from Wake Forest made the cut. Collins fell short of the first team but finished eighth overall in total voting, joining Mavericks point guard Dennis Smith Jr., Lakers guard Lonzo Ball, Kings wing Bogdan Bogdanovic and Suns wing Josh Jackson on the second team. The...

Initial mock drafts lean toward Marvin Bagley III for Hawks at No. 3

Initial mock drafts lean toward Marvin Bagley III for Hawks at No. 3

It’s not unanimous but there is a theme. Travis Schlenk and the Atlanta Hawks have more than a month to decide what to do with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft. The most obvious answer is to simply select the best player available but, of course, there is the possibility of a trade (up or down) and potential roster concerns, particularly through the prism of 2017 first round pick John Collins and fit with prospects in this year’s crop. To that end, there are a number of players that could be in consideration when Atlanta comes on the clock in late June but initial mock...

Atlanta Hawks 2017-18 Season Review: John Collins

In a forgettable season for the Atlanta Hawks, there was one player who provided plenty of highlights of the most jubilant variety. No, it wasn’t point guard Dennis Schröder, who led the team in scoring. No, it wasn’t second-year player Taurean Prince, who dominated the post-All Star Break period for the Hawks with multiple 30-point […] Atlanta Hawks 2017-18 Season Review: John Collins - Soaring Down South - Soaring Down South - An Atlanta Hawks blog

ESPN ranks John Collins as top-10 rookie for ‘future potential’

Some love for Atlanta’s soon-to-be sophomore big man. John Collins was tremendous as a rookie for the Atlanta Hawks, to the point where it is universally accepted that the No. 19 overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft was an absolute steal for the organization. With that in mind, Mike Schmitz and Kevin Pelton of ESPN set out to “rank their top 10 rookies in terms of their future potential” this week and Collins was treated quite favorably. Both analysts placed Collins at No. 7 overall and Schmitz had this to say about his ranking of the former Wake Forest standout: Next I have Collins,...

Hawks 2017-18 player review: John Collins

Hawks 2017-18 player review: John Collins

The rookie delivered an impressive first season with more to come. Travis Schlenk made his first draft selection as an NBA general manager when he chose John Collins with the No. 19 pick in the 2017 draft. One season into Collins’ career, it appears Schlenk chose wisely when making that pick, as Collins was a bright spot in a rebuilding season during which the Atlanta Hawks won just 24 games. Collins posted impressive numbers among the players in his draft class ranking in the top ten in numerous statistical categories including scoring (9th), total rebounding (2nd), offensive rebounding...
