It’s going to be a long journey; let’s do this together. Oct. 18 vs. Hawks The Dennis Smith Jr. era begins. Fly, rook, fly. Oct. 20 vs. Kings Salah Mejri gets a technical foul for picking up J.J. GAME THREAD: Dallas Mavericks at Atlanta Hawks (Preseason)

GAME THREAD: Dallas Mavericks at Atlanta Hawks (Preseason)

Dallas looking for their fourth win of the preseason. WHO: Dallas Mavericks at Atlanta Hawks WHAT: Almost done with the rigors of preseason WHERE: Atlanta WHEN: 6:30 p.m. CT HOW: FSSW Plus or NBA League Pass THE STORY: Well, for some reason the NBA is doing preseason back-to-backs because they're insane, so the Mavericks begin their second preseason back-to-back tonight in Atlanta. Since it's a back-to-back, almost none of the main rotation players will be on the floor. That means no Dirk Nowitzki, Harrison Barnes, Devin Harris, J.J. Barea or Wesley Matthews. So what's the point? Well, more...

3 things we learned from the shorthanded Mavs preseason loss at Orlando

3 things we learned from the shorthanded Mavs preseason loss at Orlando

With the "really old guys" staying home, the young Mavs struggled against the Magic. Following a 118-71 blowout of the Chicago Bulls on Wednesday night, Rick Carlisle stated that the Dallas Mavericks’ "really old guys" wouldn’t be making the trip to Orlando for the second night of a preseason back-to-back (can somebody explain to me why that is even a thing?). As it turned out, the not-so-old-guys, Harrison Barnes, Nerlens Noel and Dorian Finney-Smith (knee soreness) were included in that list, along with Dirk Nowitzki, Wesley Matthews, J.J. Barea, Devin Harris, Josh McRoberts, and...

The Mavericks whackadoodle bench lineup was the best part of the first preseason game

The Mavericks whackadoodle bench lineup was the best part of the first preseason game

Dallas played things pretty straightforward — except for this weird and awesome bench lineup. All things considered, the Mavericks first preseason game was pretty typical. The starters got their work all in the first half, the end of the roster hopefuls got their chance to show off in the fourth quarter. Nothing out of the ordinary there. Except that second quarter. Oh, that second quarter. Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle employed what might have been his masterpiece of a lineup, a bench mob consisting of Yogi Ferrell, J.J. Barea, Devin Harris, Dwight Powell and Nerlens Noel. It was truly...

J.J. Barea teamed up with Mark Cuban to bring aid to Puerto Rico

Barea has been raising money for relief efforts and made a huge step toward helping his country Well, it’s official — Mark Cuban has done more for Puerto Rico than Donald Trump. It was revealed at Mavs practice on Tuesday that the reason J.J. Barea wasn’t there was because Mark Cuban lent Barea the team plane so he could send supplies, food and water to the island. Rick Carlisle says @jjbareapr traveled to Puerto Rico with @mcuban's plane to pick up family and drop off supplies. He'll return tonight.— Earl K. J.J. Barea should continue to provide a steady, backup presence at point guard

J.J. Barea should continue to provide a steady, backup presence at point guard

The back-up point guard has a real opportunity to help the mavericks As J.J. Barea approaches his ninth season with the Dallas Mavericks, it’s unclear what sort of role he will have with this team as it develops and grows with its young core — including new point guard Dennis Smith Jr. Last season Barea played in 35 games for the Mavs and started six of those. He averaged 10.9 points, 5.5 assists and 2.4 rebounds per game which is a decent set of numbers for the backup point guard. *Click here to listen to the Locked On Mavericks J.J.
