Locked on Hawks podcast: MLK Day recap and more

Ep. 513 is here. Good evening, friends. The Atlanta Hawks took the floor on MLK Day and, while the result wasn’t favorable, there was plenty to discuss about the festivities. Episode 513 of the Locked on Hawks podcast does just that and it tackles the following subjects: Kevin Huerter was a late scratch and that placed the Hawks in a tough spot The first quarter was favorable... but that was the end of that Lloyd Pierce didn’t see much to be happy about after game Will Taurean Prince be returning to the starting lineup? Dewayne Dedmon enjoyed a barrage of three-point...

Hawks fizzle in 122-103 loss to Magic on MLK Day

Hawks fizzle in 122-103 loss to Magic on MLK Day

The first quarter was encouraging. The rest wasn’t great. The Atlanta Hawks continued an annual tradition of hosting a game on MLK Day and, after the first quarter, things looked promising with regard to the team’s potential to close a four-game homestand with a victory. However, the Orlando Magic flipped the script from that point forward and the Hawks fell by a final score of 122-103. Just before tip-off, word broke that Kevin Huerter would miss the game with a sore neck and that placed Atlanta behind the eight-ball, especially with Kent Bazemore already on the shelf with injury....

Tempers flare, Hawks falter late in physical bout against Celtics

Tempers flare, Hawks falter late in physical bout against Celtics

It was a rough second half for the home team. The Atlanta Hawks (14-31) hosted the Boston Celtics (28-18) on Saturday night at State Farm Arena in what started out as a fast-paced, action-filled contest at the formerly-christened highlight factory. Quite a bit was going on for a game that featured only four total lead changes, with the score never being tied again following the first basket of the contest. Head coach Lloyd Pierce went with a starting lineup of Trae Young, Kevin Huerter, DeAndre’ Bembry, John Collins and Dewayne Dedmon. Dedmon returned to the lineup after missing time...

Why Kevin Huerter is the perfect backcourt mate for Trae Young

Why Kevin Huerter is the perfect backcourt mate for Trae Young

A look at how a pair of rookies fit together on the court after their first half-season. Tuesday night, when the Oklahoma City Thunder came into State Farm Arena, few could have expected what happened to take place. Atlanta exploded for 142 points in an upset win, with 67 of them coming from the “big three” of Trae Young, Kevin Huerter and John Collins. For the second time in five days, the Hawks’ young core did the heavy lifting in a take-down of one of the NBA’s elite franchises, and for a night, looked elite themselves. When the Atlanta Hawks selected sophomore shooting guard...

How Taurean Prince will fit in with the Hawks when he returns

How Taurean Prince will fit in with the Hawks when he returns

The third-year forward should be back on the floor soon. The Atlanta Hawks are now 13-29 for the season and currently No. 12 in the Eastern Conference. As compared to the rest of the league, the Hawks are still firmly in the basement, but this year isn’t about the wins and losses that can be shown in the standings. Rookies Trae Young and Kevin Huerter are starting to figure out how to be serviceable NBA players. Sophomore John Collins has taken an enormous leap from his rookie season and is averaging close to a 20-point double-double. Despite their overall record, they’ve found ways...

Preview: Hawks look to avenge recent blowout against Bucks

Preview: Hawks look to avenge recent blowout against Bucks

Back at home for a matinee against a (very) good team. The Atlanta Hawks put together a memorable performance on Friday evening, stealing a road win over the Philadelphia 76ers behind strong play from Kevin Huerter and John Collins. After a travel day on Saturday, the Hawks face a quick turnaround, as the Milwaukee Bucks arrive for a Sunday matinee at State Farm Arena. In another notable showing (for all the wrong reasons), the Hawks recently flopped against the Bucks, with a disastrous first quarter setting the stage for a blowout defeat. However, there have been plenty of encouraging...

Kevin Huerter and John Collins shine in Hawks win over 76ers

Kevin Huerter and John Collins shine in Hawks win over 76ers

An impressive victory. The Atlanta Hawks are in the midst of a brutal January schedule. The team entered play in Philadelphia on Friday night set to face the Philadelphia 76ers, a squad that possessed the best home record in the league. Atlanta suffered a 21-point loss in October during their first visit to Wells Fargo Center. With that as the backdrop, a win for the visitors looked unlikely even after it was announced, before the tip-off, that All-NBA big man Joel Embiid would not be playing for Philadelphia due to ankle soreness. This Sixers roster is significantly different than the one...

Right before the second quarter buzzer, Atlanta Hawks rookie guard Kevin Huerter sunk in a pretty trick shot from behind the backboard. Though it didn’t count, Huerter’s shot was still ridiculous. The Atlanta Hawks defeated the Atlanta Hawks on the back of some clutch buckets from two of the team’s most important young players. Hawks stun Embiid-less 76ers in Philadelphia with 123-121 victory

Kevin Huerter and John Collins starred in the upset win for Atlanta. A reunion was on the schedule for the Atlanta Hawks and Philadelphia 76ers on Friday night. Atlanta head coach Lloyd Pierce spent the last five years in the City of Brotherly Love under Philadelphia head coach Brett Brown, while on the floor two of the players traded for one another over the summer were reunited with old teammates in the Hawks’ Justin Anderson and the 76ers’ Mike Muscala. Muscala made his fourth start in his new home after Joel Embiid was scratched a few minutes before game time with an ankle injury,...
