Chicago Bulls 2012-13 season in review

Blog a Bull — Grit. It was a word we often used mockingly when referring to Kirk Hinrich. But in the end, it's a perfect word to describe the 2012-13 Chicago Bulls, even though the Prodigal Son with a house in the area wasn't on the floor for a good portion of the season. Despite the Derrick Rose injury and what seemed like an absolutely horrendous offseason, I expected the Bulls to be pretty good this year. I predicted 47 wins and if things worked out right, a possible Eastern Conference Finals appearance. The caveat of course was that the Bulls would get Rose back and that they would enjoy mostly ...

Bulls still short-handed going into Game 4 against Heat

Chicago Sun-Times — The “most likely out’’ from Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau usually means no chance, no how, so with both Luol Deng (complications from spinal tap) and Kirk Hinrich (bruised left calf) categorized like that after the Monday morning shootaround, it appears the Bulls will once again be short-handed for tonight’s Game 4 at the United Center.

Bulls’ supreme effort isn’t enough this time

Chicago Sun-Times — You aren’t supposed to be able to do this in the NBA. You aren’t supposed to be able to lose your best player (Derrick Rose), another All-Star (Luol Deng) and an accomplished point guard (Kirk Hinrich) and still give the league’s defending champion fits. And yet, that’s what the Bulls did for the longest time Friday before losing 104-94 and falling behind 2-1 in this Eastern Conference semi-final series. “We fought hard,’’ Joakim Noah said. “I’m disappointed we lost the battle, but we didn’t lose the war. There’s a lot...

  • Bulls' Luol Deng, Kirk Hinrich, Derrick Rose out for Game 3 against Heat: NBA Playoffs

  • Bulls vs. Heat: Luol Deng needs to shut it down, Kirk Hinrich getting another MRI and other notes
Just about a week ago before Game 6 against the Nets, we thought that Luol Deng simply had "the flu." Since then, we've found out that he had a spinal tap, had complications from that spinal tap that involved leaking spinal fluid, and that he has been in and out of the hospital over the past few days. Today, Deng spoke to the media, and after reading his comments, I simply can't imagine the guy playing basketball again this season. He said that he tried to do some shooting, but really struggled and couldn't do it for long. He admitted to losing 15 pounds over the last week (from some i...

  • Bulls vs. Heat injury update: Luol Deng out, Dwyane Wade in, Kirk Hinrich doubtful for Game 1
Luol Deng still has not joined his Bulls teammates and will be out for Monday night's Game 1 against the Heat due to these pretty scary complications from a spinal tap procedure that went a bit haywire. After being released from the hospital on Saturday, he returned to the ER on Sunday morning and it's unclear if and when he'll fly to Miami. Not having Lu against the Heat stinks, because it's one less great defender to throw at LeBron James. Yes, James has had plenty of success against Deng over the course of his career, but Lu does make LeBron work. Jimmy Butler will now take on the ...
  • Nets comeback falls short, season ends as Bulls take Game 7, 99-93
BROOKLYN -- There's nothing more important than Game 7. Nothing. So when the Nets suited up tonight to take on the Bulls, who were without Kirk Hinrich, they knew exactly what they needed to do -- win -- and had no excuses, none, to get to the second round of the playoffs against the Miami Heat. After the first half, the Nets found themselves down my 17 points and looking like they wanted nothing to do with the Heat in the next round. It was one of the more underwhelming performances of the season. The second half, however, was a different story as Gerald Wallace and Reggie Evans led t...
  • Bulls vs. Nets Final Score: Bulls decimate Brooklyn, advance to face Miami
Unbelievable. No Luol Deng, no Kirk Hinrich, and the Bulls led this Game 7 from start to finish. They won fairly comfortably with a 99-93 score. Just...insane. We all knew the Nets were a good matchup for this team and it was proven yet again tonight. They had every handicap they could ask for to win this series, but the remaining Bulls wouldn't let it happen. The biggest game was from Joakim Noah, who guaranteed a win in this game and finished with a line to back it up: 24 points, 14 rebounds, and 6 blocks. He has improved every game this series, and brought out the best for last as h...
  • Bulls vs. Nets: Fitting that banged up Bulls pushed to brink like this
This entire Bulls season has been about overcoming adversity. Between The Derrick Rose Saga, the overhauling of the Bench Mob and an absurd rash of injuries, it certainly has been a trying year for the team. Which is why it's pretty fitting that everything will come down to a Game 7 against the Nets on the road with a roster that has no business competing in a playoff game. Kirk Hinrich has been out the last two games because he can barely walk. Luol Deng was out last night because he looked like the walking dead. Dude had a freaking spinal tap the night before. Like, seriously? And De...
