3 Points: Sizing up the Bulls-Wizards series

Every week, Nick Friedell is joined by two other ESPN writers to weigh in on three questions that are on the minds of Chicago Bulls followers. 1. What about the Wizards should concern the Bulls? Friedell: How will the Bulls be able to contain John Wall and will Tom Thibodeau be willing to use Kirk Hinrich more than his customary 25-30 minutes a night? Nene and Marcin Gortat have given the Bulls problems in the past. They can score and they know how to play on the blocks.

While the Pacers and Heat struggled, the Bulls gained confidence

The Bulls are well aware that they had no business even contemplating a spot in the Eastern Conference finals a few months ago. Not enough star power, a bit too gritty, and when it really came down to it, they just weren’t good enough in the win-loss column. No, it was a table for two back then, and only the Heat and Pacers were having chairs pulled out for them. “We all get it,’’ guard Kirk Hinrich said. “Indiana and Miami were having unbelievable years,...

The D.J. Augustin-Kirk Hinrich pairing has been great

The Augustin-Hinrich duo has been a staple down the stretch of games, and it has worked extremely well. When the Bulls signed Kirk Hinrich, we heard all about how they liked his ability to play both guard positions and how he was a guy who could mesh well playing alongside Derrick Rose. We of course never got to see the tandem in action last year, but heading into this season, we once again heard all about how dangerous the pairing could be. I kind of scoffed at all of the talk surrounding the duo's "dangerous" potential (mainly because of my lack of faith in Hinrich), and things certainly...

Rapid Reaction: Bull 105, Hawks 92

ATLANTA -- Let's take a quick look at how the Chicago Bulls earned a 105-92 win over the Atlanta Hawks on Wednesday night at Phillips Arena. How it happened: D.J. Augustin had another big game for the Bulls, going off for 23 points and five assists. Kirk Hinrich added 17 points, six assists and three rebounds, as the Bulls grinded out another win. Paul Millsap paced the Hawks with 22 points and 11 rebounds, but it wasn't enough for an Atlanta team that continues its late-season slide.

Bulls getting a lot from fearsome fivesome late in games

It’s still too soon for a nickname. Backup big man Taj Gibson will entertain suggestions, but he said, ‘‘Let’s see how this ends first.’’ Coach Tom Thibodeau is never shy about using any of his players at any time, but he seems to have settled on a closing group. Gibson, Joakim Noah, Jimmy Butler, Kirk Hinrich and D.J. Augustin have been his players of choice in the fourth quarter and when games are on the line. And they have provided pretty good...

Hard for Bulls’ stars to align when they don’t have any

It took all of about 10 minutes Monday night for the Bulls to realize there was no phone booth on the hardwood of the United Center. Certainly no one was throwing on a red cape. Taj Gibson missed a shot that would have given the Bulls the lead against the Oklahoma City Thunder at the 9:19 mark of the fourth quarter. Then Jimmy Butler missed on a 25-footer. D.J. Augustin missed a long jumper. And so on and so forth . . . Kirk Hinrich couldn’t do it, nor could...
