Spurs bench sparks comeback win over Mavericks

Spurs bench sparks comeback win over Mavericks

With the stars struggling, the bench did the heavy lifting to lead the Spurs to a valuable road victory. Well, that was fun. After looking lost for most of the first half, the Spurs pulled off a dramatic comeback against the Mavericks in the final two quarters to steal a much-needed win. The bench played a huge role in securing the 105-101 victory that allows San Antonio to put more separation in the standings with a fellow playoff contender. With Marco Belinelli and Rudy Gay back in the active roster, there was hope that the Spurs were going to regain the dominant form they had showed in...

The Spurs hit their first 14 three-pointers against the Thunder

The Spurs are red-hot tonight! Led by a red-hot Marco Belinelli, the Spurs hit their first 14 threes of the game, including going 10-10 in the first half, an NBA-best for any half over the last 20 years. It was the most threes the Spurs had opened a game hitting since they hit their first 11 against the Kings in 2002. Belinelli hit 5-5, including three straight off steals in a 90-second span late in the first quarter, along with two from Patty Mills, three from Davis Bertans. Squad went 10/10 from DEEP in the first half. #GoSpursGo pic.twitter.com/MEgnOct412— San Antonio Spurs...

Behold the leaning tower of ... Marco Belinelli

Behold the leaning tower of ... Marco Belinelli

The backstory of our Italian’s oddball shooting form. As we have already discussed, Spurs guard Marco Belinelli’s shooting form is crazy and enjoyable to watch. No one seems seems to have an answer for it, not even noted basketball genius and two-time coach of Belinelli’s, Gregg Popovich. “It’s not a sometimes thing — he always is leaning somewhere. I don’t know who taught him that, but it can’t be untaught at this point. It’s just there.” However, Chris Herring of fivethirtyeight.com may finally have an answer behind the mystery of the sharpshooter who refuses to...

Marco Belinelli’s crazy shooting form is a joy to watch

...and other enjoyable observations from this season. Part of the fun of watching guys like Manu Ginobili, Boris Diaw, and Tony Parker was that in any game you stood a decent chance of seeing an offensive technique that you had never seen before. Marco Belinelli is in that club. One of the techniques that I’ve enjoyed watching this season is his one-dribble coming off screens going to his right. Just watch the 12 and 50 second marks in the below video and observe the distance he sometimes pushes the ball away from him if the space is there and the Spurs run something to his right. (Side...

Open Thread: Merry Christmas, Pounders

How do you celebrate the holiday? There has been lots of Christmas spirit coming from the San Antonio Spurs. Pop and Derrick White visited Pershing Elementary and gave out shoes through Shoes That Fit. Pau Gasol visited Methodist Children’s Hospital here in San Antonio. Pau, joined by Patty Mills and Bryn Forbes, visited The Children’s Shelter of San Antonio. Marco Belinelli helped distribute Christmas trees to some families in need at the Wesley Health & Wellness Center. Rudy Gay brightened a family’s Christmas dressed as Santa Clause through the Elf Louise Project. Lonnie Walker IV...

Spurs stay hot, light up Timberwolves

Spurs stay hot, light up Timberwolves

The unlikely trio of Forbes, Belinelli and Bertans combined for 54 points as the Spurs continued their torrid December stretch and rolled past the Wolves. Tom Thibodeau can’t say he didn’t see it coming. “San Antonio’s always played to their strengths,” the Wolves coach said before Friday night’s matchup. “They try to post LaMarcus quite a bit, but when their bench comes in the game changes a little bit. Patty Mills, Belinelli, Bertans — they get the pace up pretty good. If you let your guard down against those guys and they get those shots, they’re gonna make...

San Antonio vs. Minnesota, Final Score: Spurs reserves take care of Wolves 124-98

Spurs reserves put the game away with hot shooting from Bertans, Belinelli as the Spurs put away the Timberwolves The Spurs have been on a hot streak lately, and tonight it was the bench players who put away the Minnesota Timberwolves with hot shooting from Marco Belinelli and Davis Bertans sealing the game in the second half as LaMarcus Aldridge and DeMar Aldridge sat on the bench resting for the second half. Derrick White had a solid game on defense, taking on taller players on switches and holding his own as often as not. Robert Covington was solid for the Timberwolves, hitting outside...
