Hoops Hype
The Memphis Grizzlies have decided to part ways with Wade Baldwin, who was a first-round pick for the team in the 2016 NBA draft. Last season, Memphis also waived their 2014 first-round pick, Jordan Adams. Baldwin, 21, played 33 games for the Grizzlies as a rookie after he was selected at No. 17 overall. Tim Bontemps of the Washington Post notes the trend of moving on from players drafted early is certainly notable for the franchise. With todays Wade Baldwin news, the last Grizzlies 1st rounder to get a 2nd contract from the team was Mike Conley. He was drafted in 2007. — Tim Bontemps...

Key Match Up: Mike Conley is the homeless man’s Steph Curry

Key Match Up: Mike Conley is the homeless man’s Steph Curry

Steph Curry dominates elite PG conversation; Conley wants in Stephen Curry is the two time Most Valuable Player, the only Unanimous MVP in league history, and the greatest shooter to ever grace planet earth. He once led the league in scoring and steals in the same season while skipping 4th quarters like Ferris Bueller ditching class. I mean, why play in the 4th when you’ve already scored 40 and your team is up 30? He is the face of the new era of basketball. He is the living intersection where analytics and humanity’s wildest dreams meet. The Baby Faced Assassin is a fun-sized guard in...

Report Card: Grizzlies vs. Pelicans

Grading the Grizzlies season-opening win against the New Orleans Pelicans Four minutes in the game and FedExForum was overcome by silence. JaMychal Green goes down with a left ankle injury and it is déjà vu to the Celtics game from the night before. Fortunately for the Grizzlies, the injury did not look as severe. However, after Green went down the bench stepped up huge in defeating the Pelicans after a dominant second half. The win can be described in two words: Team Basketball. Now, to team grades. Mike Conley- A Conley came ready to play tonight. He had a captain-like mindset leading...

Grizzlies top Pelicans on Opening Night 103-91

Tony Allen comes back to Memphis and takes a loss at the hands of Mike Conley and the Grizzlies. The emotion of the night was clear with Tony Allen’s return to the Grindhouse he helped build as the new-look Memphis Grizzlies pulled out a double-digit win over the New Orleans Pelicans 103-91 in the first game of the season for both teams. First Quarter The game started off great for the Grizzlies. Mike Conley and Marc Gasol are still good at basketball. Mike Conley dropped in 10 points in the first quarter alone, in just 8 minutes. Marc Gasol was on the court throwing dimes down the floor...

Recap: Grizzlies Roll New Orleans 142-101

Tony Allen is back in his first appearance as a Pelican in Memphis The Grindfather was back in the building tonight, but it was only as a spectator as the Memphis Grizzlies got a commanding victory over the New Orleans Pelicans, 142-101. The Grizzlies and Pelicans both looked a bit out of sync early on, the Grizzlies especially so. Marc Gasol got the Grizzlies first basket with about 8:30 left in the quarter. Wade Baldwin got the start at the 2 spot like Andrew Harrison did last game. Wade, Marc, and Mike Conley each had threes to help give the Grizzlies a 34-24 lead at the end of the...

Conley and Gasol have been through it all together, and they both face new challenges this season with this new-look Grizzlies team. Marc Gasol has more pressure than ever on him to perform and help carry Memphis this season. Game Recap: Grizzlies beat the Sixers 110-89

Game Recap: Grizzlies beat the Sixers 110-89

Diving in to the numbers and highlights for Grizzlies-76ers takeaways. Your preseason undefeated Memphis Grizzlies came away with a meaningless big victory last night against the overrated up and coming Philadelphia 76ers last night by the final score of 110-89. This performance, without Mike Conley and Marc Gasol, is promising but not particularly enlightening. The 76ers were debuting talented-but-unproven rookies in Markelle Fultz and Ben Simmons, Joel Embiid did not play, and these early games as a whole do more for finding conditioning and footing than projecting to the regular season...

Memphis Grizzlies vs. Orlando Magic: Preseason things to watch for

BASKETBALL IS BACK HOORAY! The Memphis Grizzlies are playing a “basketball game” for the first time since April 27th. 157 days is a long time to go without seeing basketball from the Bears of Beale Street, but finally, we’re back. Of course, “basketball game” is in quotes because it is only the preseason, and we are actually a little more than two weeks away from the beginning of the games that count. But for some players, this game matter a lot. Maybe not for Marc Gasol, who is sitting this one out for precautionary measures with his ankle, or for Mike Conley, whose role on this...

Memphis Grizzlies 2017-18 Player Previews: Wade Baldwin IV

Memphis Grizzlies 2017-18 Player Previews: Wade Baldwin IV

Not gonna lie, it’s bleak... Did we, as fans and media, put too much pressure on Wade Baldwin IV in his rookie season? I thought of this question while researching this post and haven’t been able to convince myself fully that we didn’t. Much has changed approaching year two for the Vanderbilt product. This time last year, it was a distinct, if not likely possibility that Baldwin would be the primary backup for point guard Mike Conley. His first round status and the lack of depth at the position primed people to think that, yes, he should be the rightful potential long-term heir to...
