Three isn't a magic number: On the Wizards' struggles from downtown

The Wizards' offense has been among the lowest scoring in the preseason thanks mostly to awful three-point shooting. Is there any hope things get turned around before the team's shooters get healthy? The Wizards' reputation for offensive prowess exceeded the team's actual performance last year. Pulled down by a poor bench and an over-reliance on mid range shots, the Wizards finished the season 16th in the NBA in offensive rating. Significant improvement was expected given projected improvements from their young players, a deeper bench and the addition of the versatile Paul Pierce. But those...

Without Paul Pierce, Nets counting on Mirza Teletovic

Nobody can do more to erase the memory of Paul Pierce in a Brooklyn uniform than Mirza Teletovic. Whether or not GM Billy King will ever admit it publicly, dealing three first-round draft picks for Pierce and Kevin Garnett in 2013 was a failure.

Wizards vs. Hornets final score: 3 things we learned after Washington's 96-86 loss

The Washington Wizards fell apart in the fourth quarter of their 96-86 loss to the Charlotte Hornets, but at least Paul Pierce appears to be OK. A putrid second half doomed the Washington Wizards as they lost at home to the Charlotte Hornets, 96-86 Washington came out like gangbusters, shooting 54 percent in the first half and jumping out to a 14 point lead, but largely fell apart after Paul Pierce left the game with a knee injury. Even though Pierce would return in the third quarter before leaving for good, the Wizards never re-established their groove and couldn't buy a bucket during the...

Wiz Insider: Paul Pierce provides another Wizards injury scare in loss to Hornets

At this point, it seems the Washington Wizards cannot survive a preseason game without an injury scare. Last Friday, starting shooting guard Bradley Beal broke his wrist. On Wednesday, Beal’s replacement, Glen Rice Jr., sprained his ankle. And tonight, starting small forward Paul Pierce’s right knee collided with a Charlotte Hornets defender, and Pierce limped off the floor with 5.4 seconds in the first half. Read full article >>

Paul Pierce eventually leaves Hornets game after knee injury scare

It didn't look serious, but you never know. Can the Wizards get through one game without an injury scare? I guess not. This time, it's Paul Pierce who went down with what appeared to be a leg or knee injury in the closing seconds of the first half against the Hornets. Michael Kidd-Gilchrist ran into his knee trying to defend a pick and roll and Pierce stayed down for a while before limping to the locker room on his own power with the team's training staff trailing him. Pierce stayed in the game for a period in the third quarter, but later left for good. I don't think this is serious, but...

Washington Wizards 2014-15 Preview

With a savvy veteran leader like Paul Pierce on board, are the Wizards ready to take the next step and compete for an Eastern Conference title? Washington Wizards season preview: Can this team be great? - Bullets Forever Replacing Ariza with Pierce, who will be 37 and spent most of last year playing power forward for the Nets, will pose a challenge for Wittman. Though Pierce is a solid team defender, it's asking a lot at his age to chase around opposing small forwards from night to night, let alone take Ariza's role as the best perimeter defender. In response, Wall and Beal to step up on...

Joakim Noah, Paul Pierce fined $15K each for altercation

NEW YORK — Washington Wizards players DeJuan Blair, Nene, Daniel Orton and Xavier Silas were each suspended for one regular-season game by the NBA on Wednesday for leaving the bench area during an altercation between Paul Pierce and Chicago’s Joakim Noah. Noah was fined $15,000 for initiating the altercation in an exhibition game Monday night in Chicago by pushing Pierce in the chest, and Pierce was fined $15,000 for hitting Noah in the forehead with his left...

Nene, DeJuan Blair suspended for season opener for leaving the bench

They, along with Xavier Silas and Daniel Orton, violated a controversial rule by jumping off the bench during the Joakim Noah/Paul Pierce showdown on Monday. Monday's Paul Pierce-Joakim Noah skirmish has resulted in Wizards suspensions ... for players not named Paul Pierce or Joakim Noah. Instead, four players -- Nene, DeJuan Blair, Xavier Silas and Daniel Orton -- will be suspended for the regular-season opener for violating the age-old leaving the bench rule, the league announced Tuesday. Pierce and Noah, meanwhile, will both be fined $15,000. The leaving-the-bench rule is the famous, yet...

Nets GM Billy King responds to Paul Pierce

NEW YORK -- Nets GM Billy King responded to Paul Pierce’s comments about Brooklyn’s non-contending status Tuesday, saying the organization remains committed to winning. Pierce, who was not offered a contract by the Nets in the offseason and ended up signing a two-year, $11 million free-agent deal with the Washington Wizards, told NBA.com that the Nets “wanted to cut costs” and felt like they “weren’t going to be a contender.
