Could the Celtics revisit the Josh Smith, Paul Pierce 3 way trade with Dallas?

CelticsBlog — Danny Ainge's comments and actions seem to indicate that he'd like to find a way to trade Paul Pierce and move on with the next era of Celtics basketball. Maybe I'm reading too much into his comments yesterday, but he said his first decision would likely be to decide what to do with Paul Pierce (after a lot of "discussions" with all the parties involved). He also said that he expects Pierce to play and and that the Celtics were more than one player away from a Championship. Also, go back to the last trade deadline and you'll find that he was pretty close to moving Paul Pierce to the ...

Regardless of what could happen in the free agent market, the draft is still first on the agenda. The 2013 NBA Draft is on the 27th of June and the Boston Celtics will be selecting at pick number 16. Ainge’s roster hinges on Pierce-Garnett decision

Boston Herald — Danny Ainge has stood here each of the last four seasons. The Celtics president of basketball operations’ choices date back to the summer of 2010, when coach Doc Rivers signed a one-year contract extension and followed up with a five-year extension the following spring. Paul Pierce signed a four-year contract extension in 2010, and Kevin Garnett signed for three more years last summer. This was an overall attempt to prop open a window that was expected to close three years ago.

Into the Mind of Danny Ainge : The Post-Big 3 Era

CelticsBlog — Pretend that the Boston Celtics let go of Paul Pierce, and as a byproduct of that move, Kevin Garnett decides to retire. After six memorable years, with a championship win in 2008, the Big 3 era would officially be over. Let that sink in for a moment. The Boston Celtics have had many teams with a "Big 3" over the years, whether or not they were categorized as such at the time. It all started with Bill Russell, Bob Cousy, and Bill Sharman -- which morphed into Bill Russell, Sam Jones, and John Havlicek -- and into the 70s it became John Havlicek, Dave Cowens and Jo Jo White -- then there...

Futures of Garnett, Pierce big questions

Boston Globe — Their pasts intertwine, dating to 1995 when Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett were part of the same high school class and played ball during summers in the same basketball camps.

Building blocks - Rondo has help in Green, Bradley, and Sullinger

CelticsBlogPaul Pierce has been the face of the Celtics since most of the people reading this post can remember. The winning tradition was restored when Kevin Garnett came into town. If those two are gone this summer (and barring other large trades), the future is in the hands of Rajon Rondo, Jeff Green, Avery Bradley, and Jared Sullinger. We know, for the most part, what we have in Rondo. He's a star and he's someone that you can build around. Ainge may chose not to, but that's a whole other article. To build around a star, you need building blocks. Sure, it helps to have other stars and s...

Stars hardly in alignment for C's

Boston HeraldPaul Pierce and Kevin Garnett could still play major roles in a Celtics push for a championship. We honestly believe that. But the key word in the opening sentence is “roles.” As with most things in life, context is king, and the ability of the Celts to surround the Hall of Fame pair with the pieces that would allow them to move to the roles for which they are now better suited is critical to this equation.

Jeff Green dances around a lead role

Boston HeraldPaul Pierce walked off the floor Friday night to a 50/50 Celtics future. Some have envisioned Jeff Green as the heir to Pierce’s longtime role, though the 26-year-old forward has only shown flashes of an ability to lead. But should the Celtics buy Pierce out of the remaining year of his contract, that weight will indeed descend on Green.Doc Rivers, who remains unconvinced of Green’s ability to step onto Pierce’s level, showed some of that cynicism recently when asked about Green’s emergence as a so-called go-to guy.

For Paul Pierce, ball in Ainge’s court

Boston HeraldPaul Pierce trudged off the floor with 27 seconds left Friday night, his season over and maybe his Celtics career as well. One of president of basketball operations Danny Ainge’s biggest decisions in the offseason will be what to do with the captain. Pierce has a year left on a contract that would pay him $15.3 million, but the C’s could save more than $10 million if they buy him out by June 30.

From Celtics to Pacers, perimeter D key

Knicks Blog | ESPN New York — GREENBURGH, N.Y. -- The Boston Celtics had just gone on a 20-0 run in the fourth quarter of Game 6 when the New York Knicks' Iman Shumpert made a game-changing play to stop the scoring. Shumpert saw Paul Pierce about to make a difficult cross-court pass, and he jumped into the passing lane, stole the ball and finished a fast-break layup. Those kinds of plays owned the Celtics, fueling the Knicks to a 3-0 series lead and the eventual takedown. In fact, both teams basically shot the same from the field (41 percent), but it was the Knicks' perimeter defense that made the biggest difference.

What will Danny do? What will he do with Pierce, Garnett, and the rest of the roster?

CelticsBlog — There are dozens of different directions that Danny Ainge could go in this offseason. Run it back, reload on the fly, rebuild around Rajon Rondo, rebuild by trading Rondo and others, tank completely for a shot at Wiggins, or some odd combination of 2 or 3 of those. Everything is on the table, ...everything. It appears that the window has officially been slammed shut. We will not see the Celtics compete for a championship with Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett as the best two players on the roster. I'd argue that they probably can't do it with Pierce and Garnett as the 2nd and 3rd best ...

Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett have ‘no idea’ about their futures after Game 6

Green Street | WEEI — It was the obvious question to ask Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce in the moments after their season came to an end with a Game 6 loss to the Knicks. Will they be back for another season? “I haven’t really thought about it, to be honest with you. I’m kind of digesting , obviously, the [...]

Future in Boston up in the air for aging Garnett, Pierce

New York Post — BOSTON — The future for two cornerstones of the 2008 Celtics, Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett, is as uncomplicated as picking a winning powerball scenario. Both have indicated they want to be back in Boston. That’s where it gets tricky for Pierce and Garnett, who both will be 37 at...

  • The Pelicans rumor: Paul Pierce and Avery Bradley for Eric Gordon
This is the time of year where GM's do a lot of window shopping and make sure the stuff they're trying to pawn off on to other GM's are front fixtures of their store. If you haven't heard, the marriage between NO and Eric Gordon hasn't been going well and the long time union between Paul Pierce and Boston might be coming to a close. Naturally, they make for a perfect wife swap right now. The only place this is getting traction right now is in the Twitterverse and in the forums, but here ya go: Just heard strange rumor from EC source: Celtics talking about possibility of Pierce and B...

  • The doctor is in: Rivers to return for 2013-2014 season
For now, the story exists only in the Twittersphere without any formal announcement, but it looks like Doc is coming back next season. Danny Ainge confirms that Doc Rivers is returning next season as #celtics coach. "We've got a coach everybody would love to have." — gary washburn (@GwashNBAGlobe) May 16, 2013 That's the first domino to fall in the "run it back" plan, but there's still the uncertain futures of Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett. Garnett would have probably retired had Doc left, so there's that. Pierce is still the key piece to the puzzle though. In other Doc news: Rive...

  • Another idea: Bring back Al Jefferson (sign and trade for Paul Pierce)
Like many Celtics fans, I hated seeing Al Jefferson go back in 2007. It was totally worth the price, especially in hindsight, but it was hard to say goodbye to the kid that grew into a legit low post star before our eyes in Boston. It was hard to watch from afar as he struggled through injuries and horrible seasons in Minnesota and a first round flame out in Utah. All along the way, there have been countless fan generated ideas on how to bring him back to Boston, but of course that never worked out. Now he's a free agent (in the same year that teammate Paul Milsap is a free agent by...
