GAME GRADES: Another season. Another heartbreaker for Nets

GAME GRADES: Another season. Another heartbreaker for Nets

BROOKLYN NETS Grade: B- The Nets battled (shout out Avery Johnson), but ultimately came up short against a team they could be competing for a playoff spot with in April. The Nets got off to a rousing start, leading by as much as twelve in the first quarter, but the lack of depth without four key rotation players (Rondae Hollis-Jefferson, DeMarre Carroll, Shabazz Napier, Allen Crabbe) was evident as Detroit battled back to tie the game going into the half. Then, the infamous third quarter woes made a return, with Detroit using their bulk inside to power their way to a 32-25 advantage through...

The Brooklyn Nets didn’t give rookie scale contract extensions to starting point guard D’Angelo Russell and power forward Rondae Hollis-Jefferson. Monday was the deadline for teams to give out rookie scale extensions, something Russell and Hollis-Jefferson apparently  weren’t aware of, per Michael Scotto of The Athletic. No extensions for DAngelo Russell and Rondae Hollis-Jefferson. Nets extend Caris LeVert, Jarrett Allen, not D’Angelo Russell, Rondae Hollis-Jefferson

In what has to be the biggest Duh of the off-season, the Nets have exercised the 2019-20 contract options for center Jarrett Allen and guard Caris LeVert. As players on rookie deals, Allen and LeVert would have been free agents next season unless the Nets moved to keep them. It will be Allen’s third season and LeVert’s fourth. There was never any doubt the Nets would exercise the options, which will pay Allen $2.4 million and LeVert $2.6 million. Sean Marks had until Monday to do so. Both have spoken in recent days about their excitement for the regular season to start. “We’re...

Rondae Hollis-Jefferson looking good for opener

Rondae Hollis-Jefferson looking good for opener

He may not start and he certainly won’t play big minutes, but Rondae Hollis-Jefferson —and his coach— think he’ll be on the court Wednesday in Detroit for the Nets opening game. RHJ started practicing fully just this week after straining his adductor muscle more than two months ago during warm-ups for a charity game in Shenzhen, China, sponsored by former teammate Jeremy Lin. He missed the entire preseason and lost valuable time during training camp as well. “Whenever they give a green light, we’re good,” Hollis-Jefferson said. “Because I play so energetic and all over the...

Nets injury problems ease ... as Kenny Atkinson lauds Rodions Kurucs

Rondae Hollis-Jefferson, whose defense was missed Wednesday against the Knicks, participated in some of the Nets practice Friday, but still isn’t practiced fully. He suffered a strained adductor injury on August 4 while warming up for a charity game in China sponsored by Jeremy Lin. Similarly, Kenneth Faried practiced partially Friday. As Brian Lewis reported, Faried’s been out with an ankle injury. No word on whether the duo will travel to Detroit for Monday night’s game vs. the Pistons ... or participate in the Nets Practice in Park Saturday at Brooklyn Bridge Park. Shabazz Napier...

Kenny starts LeVert; says Rondae will return at the 4 upon return

He also discussed the combination of Spencer Dinwiddie and D’Angelo Russell, plus what to expect from Kenneth Faried, Ed Davis and Shabazz Napier In his first pre-game address of the season … okay preseason Kenny Atkinson had plenty to say, since there was plenty ask. After announcing the debut starting line-up of D’Angelo Russell, Allen Crabbe, Caris LeVert, DeMarre Carroll and Jarrett Allen, Atkinson quickly said Rondae Hollis-Jefferson will return to start at the 4 upon his return from injury. “When Rondae’s back fully, I expect Rondae to be in that position and we’ll...

For Nets, rebounding improves, but shooting?

For Nets, rebounding improves, but shooting?

During an 11-game stretch that bridged January and February last season, Rondae Hollis-Jefferson was out with a strained groin. The Nets suffered too, winning only one game (surprisingly against Philadelphia) while RHJ recovered. For the most part, the Nets used a gerry-built line-up that featured two stretch-4’s, Quincy Acy and Dante Cunningham, at power forward with Cunningham even playing a little 5! They were decidedly out of place and over and over again, the Nets got killed on the boards and on defense. Maybe it was Kenny Atkinson begging Sean Marks to find him legitimate big...

RHJ on Jimmy Butler: “We’d love to have him...”

Rondae Hollis-Jefferson is an advocate for #JimmyToBKN... unless he’s in the trade. Rondae Hollis-Jefferson is the lone survivor from the Billy King era. He’s entering his fourth year in the league and has taken a veteran leadership role at 23-years-old. But he’s never seen more than 28 wins in his short career and that came last year with 28. It’s easy to understand why he would welcome superstar Jimmy Butler with open arms. He’s a good guy who wants to win. It’s in his DNA, Hollis-Jefferson believes. But there’s also been a lot about how he doesn’t get along with young...
