Josh Smith and Dwight Howard can be unstoppable together

Once they got going, Game 2 ended pretty darn quickly. After three quarters of Game 2 of their first round playoff series against the Mavericks, the Rockets were only leading 81-80 despite outplaying Dallas.  Their defense was good overall, but a couple of key lapses led to open threes, and James Harden was having an off shooting night -- for that matter, everyone was having an off shooting night. The fourth quarter began with James Harden sitting on the bench. On the floor were Pablo Prigioni, Corey Brewer, Trevor Ariza, Josh Smith and Dwight Howard. All of a sudden, something clicked...

Trevor Ariza says Rockets not worried by any Mavericks’ adjustments

Rockets forward Trevor Ariza said he knows Dallas will make adjustments for Game 2. He just isn’t worried too much about what the Mavericks are doing. Ariza said the Rockets’ offense is set up to work around whatever their opponents are doing defensively. “We are the type of team that will take what the defense […]

Trevor Ariza likely to defend Monta Ellis

The Rockets and Mavericks likely will put their top defenders on the opposing teams’ top scorers, ignoring positions to try to match strengths with strengths. For the Rockets, that will likely mean having Trevor Ariza often defending Monta Ellis (with James Harden on Chandler Parsons). The Mavericks could have Rajon Rondo on Harden, as they […]

Wild playoff race piques Rockets’ interest as they enter regular-season finale

The Rockets won’t know who they will face in the playoffs until they finish their regular-season finale Wednesday night against Utah and until the Spurs and Pelicans finish their game. Several scenarios still exist, but the Rockets can guarantee home-court advantage with a win. Trevor Ariza, who is in his 11th season in the NBA, […]

Rockets to get a repeat starting lineup vs. Spurs

With Dwight Howard and Terrence Jones not listed on the Rockets injury report for the first time since January, the Rockets starting lineup in San Antonio on Wednesday will play its third game together this season, more starts together than any lineup of current, available Rockets players. The lineup of Jason Terry, James Harden, Trevor […]

Rockets make comeback, beat Mavericks 108-101

Trevor Ariza had a James Harden game tonight. And James Harden, well, he did too. Coming into tonight's game against the Dallas Mavericks, ex-Washington Wizard Trevor Ariza had been averaging 16 points in the Houston Rockets last 10 games. Tonight, he scored 19 points on 6-of-12 shooting, going three-of-seven from the three-point arc, and tallied six assists, six rebounds and two steals. I think it's safe to say Ariza has found his shooting touch again. And at the perfect time. With seven more games until the postseason begins, Ariza has helped shoot the Rockets in pace to break the league...

What we learned from the Rockets’ victory over the Wizards

Rockets 99, Wizards 91 The Rockets could not have known how crucial reinforcements would be in a season overrun by injuries. They do now. Other than Trevor Ariza and James Harden, who between them have missed only the one game Harden was suspended, the most durable and dependable Rockets have been the players they acquired […]

Rockets turning to rookie Nick Johnson as injuries continue to mount

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Rockets rookie Nick Johnson played for more than 16 minutes off the Rockets bench, more than he had in the few games he has played combined since Jan. 2. With Pat Beverley out and the injuries to Rockets power forwards Donatas Motiejunas and Terrence Jones pushing to Trevor Ariza to minutes at […]

Morning tip: Wizards can trace perimeter D issues to Trevor Ariza

Whenever the Wizards have confusion or a major flub on a key defensive play down the stretch, the loss of Trevor Ariza, who they couldn't afford in free agency, is more glaring.
