Team USA clobbers Iran

Charlotte Observer — (Associated Press) The United States earned a top seed in the knockout round of the world championship with an 88-51 victory over Iran on Wednesday in the first meeting between the countries with a history of contentious relations.The U.S. team, which downplayed the political aspect of the game, methodically pulled away in the first half, wearing down the Asian champions with its depth and athleticism.

Michael Jordan lends schools a hand

Charlotte Observer — (By Ron Green Jr., rgreenjr@charlotteobserver.com) Michael Jordan and the NBA's Charlotte Bobcats will announce a $250,000 donation Monday to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg school system to help fund middle-school athletics programs this academic year.Jordan, an NBA legend who made a fortune with his basketball skills and marketing savvy, bought the Charlotte Bobcats this spring. At the time, he talked of the importance of making the franchise an active contributor within the Charlotte community.

Big second quarter helps US run away from Croatia

Charlotte Observer — (By BRIAN MAHONEY, AP Basketball Writer) Kevin Durant scored 14 points and got the United States started on a dominant second-quarter stretch in a 106-78 victory over Croatia on Saturday in its opening game at the world championship.Eric Gordon made four 3-pointers and had 16 points to lead the Americans, who turned a close game into a blowout by limiting the Croatians to six points in the second quarter. Chauncey Billups finished with 12 points.

Curry makes the cut as U.S. team sets final roster

Charlotte Observer — (Associated Press) Former Davidson star Stephen Curry was named to the U.S. national basketball team Tuesday as it finalized its roster for the world championships.The final 12-man roster includes: Curry, Kevin Durant, Derrick Rose, Rudy Gay, Lamar Odom, Chauncey Billups, Danny Granger, Russell Westbrook, Eric Gordon, Kevin Love, Tyson Chandler and Andre Iguodala.
