Orange slices (aka Suns notes)

Coro's Suns dish | Arizona Republic — Phoenix Suns update: It's a holiday weekend so let's break out the orange slices: * It has been another great early turnout for the Suns voluntary workouts, which don't customarily start in earnest until after Labor Day. Nine of the 14 contract players are in town. The others are easily accounted for with Jared Dudley, Jason Richardson and Hakim Warrick sharing their workouts and events on Twitter and Hedo Turkoglu and Goran Dragic playing in the FIBA World Championship in Turkey. * With visitors like Amar'e Stoudemire, Zabian Dowdell, Cezary Trybanski, Sean Marks, Alex Scales and Lawrenc...

More from Amar'e

Coro's Suns dish | Arizona Republic — Phoenix Suns update: Amar'e Stoudemire's return to and reflections on Phoenix were chronicled in an article you can read here. But there was more of what Stoudemire said on Wednesday afternoon. As mentioned in the article, Stoudemire's main issue with taking New York's five-year, $99.7 million contract over Phoenix's five year, $96.6 million contract was that the Suns' offer had $40 million of non-guaranteed money, which Stoudemire fittingly compared to a NFL contract. He would have received all of his money in the Suns offer easily as long as he played even close to as man...

A Jones for the Suns' big man jones

Coro's Suns dish | Arizona Republic — Phoenix Suns update: The Suns signed Dwayne Jones on April 5 for the remainder of the season and a second-year team option because they believed he could stick with the team and there would likely be a big man spot with Louis Amundson becoming a free agent. That contract structure also made him a viable trade piece and he got tossed in the Leandro Barbosa-Hedo Turkoglu swap with Toronto last month. But it did not mean that the Suns had lost interest in Jones, who they re-signed today to address the smallish roster's need for a big man. Jones had impressed the Suns coaching ...read the res...

Good day, bad day for Dragic

Coro's Suns dish | Arizona Republic — Phoenix Suns update: That was Tunisia on Saturday. This was Team USA today. And Goran Dragic responded as such in both situations. After looking like the best player on the court in Slovenia's World Championship on Saturday, Dragic was barely on the court when it mattered Sunday in Slovenia's 99-77 loss to the U.S. The Suns guard picked up two backcourt fouls 28 seconds apart and in the first 3:08 of the group play game, forcing him to the bench after Slovenia already had dug a 10-2 hole. Slovenia rallied in the second quarter to within six points and Dragic returned to help ...read the rest o...

Dragic leads Slovenia to opening WC win

Coro's Suns dish | Arizona Republic — Phoenix Suns update: Suns guard Goran Dragic had a successful start today to the largest role of his international basketball career, starting at point guard for Slovenia in the FIBA World Championship. Slovenia opened group play with an easy 80-56 victory against Tunisia without ever trailing. Dragic led Slovenia with 16 points, making six of nine shots (including 1 of 3 3-pointers) and adding eight assists, five rebounds and a steal. Highlights showed him repeatedly penetrating the lane, breaking down the defense for layups and kick-out assists. Slovenia plays Team USA ne...

They're followed by the Orlando Magic (11-1), the Boston Celtics (12-1) and the Chicago Bulls (15-1). The youthful Oklahoma City Thunder, Dallas Mavericks and Denver Nuggets follow at 18-1. • 2010-11 roster breakdown: Pau Gasol Land O' Lakers | ESPN Los Angeles As part of our look ahead at the Lakers' projected roster next season, we continue to work our way from the bottom to the top of the rotation. Next up... Player Pau Gasol Salary $17,823,000 Garrett W. Ellwood/NBAE/Getty Images Pau Gasol has been to the Finals three straight times with the Lakers. How good does he need to be this year to reach a fourth? We've grown so used to the metronome-worthy consistency it was jarring to see him struggle, relatively speaking, but from the moment he tweaked a hammy in training camp nearly a year ago, Pau Gasol set himself up for much tougher sled...

  • The Lakers' second unit and the big question about offense Lakers Blog | Los Angeles Times Everyone who follows the NBA understands how important the second unit is to not only winning games but winning championships. The moves the Lakers made in the offseason certainly filled their needs -- a proven point guard in Steve Blake to team with high-flying guard Shannon Brown, providing a formidable long-range shooter and an athletic slasher. The departed Jordan Farmar was a fine second-unit point guard, but I think Lakers fans will be pleased with Blake's efficiency, and I expect Brown to continue to improve. Newly acquired Matt Barnes will team in the front court with Lamar Odom, givin...
