2018 NCAA Draft: Trevon Duval Declares

2018 NCAA Draft: Trevon Duval Declares

Duke’s freshman point guard will be working for a living very soon. No great surprise as Duke’s Trevon Duval joins Marvin Bagley in declaring for the NBA draft. Bagley is, at worst, a likely top three pick; Duval’s range is much less certain. He could conceivably go in the first round or fall to anywhere in the second. On the positive side, he has immense physical talent. On the negative side, he was (sort of) demoted as a point guard later in the season. He also didn’t shoot well although that improved somewhat later in the year. The scouts and executives will also want to...

N&O: Duke, NCAA Cleared Bagley & Family

Eligibility concerns were dealt with proactively The News & Observer’s Jonathan Alexander and Steve Wiseman teamed up to write this story about the recent story about the Bagley family benefiting from AAU basketball. As it turns out, Duke and the NCAA had carefully checked the situation and found that Marvin Bagley was eligible and that there were no NCAA issues. So that’s that as far as the NCAA is concerned. However, there’s a real howler in this article, a bit of opinion which is treated as fact. And it’s quite a whopper: “Athletes who want to turn professional are forced to...

Bagley Declares For The NBA

Bagley Declares For The NBA

Stop the presses! Just kidding. It’s the least surprising story in weeks. To absolutely no one’s surprise, Marvin Bagley has declared for the NBA draft. He’ll be, at the least, a top three pick and has a chance of going first. He had a superb year at Duke and we’re sure he’ll be brilliant as a professional. Best of luck to him. He leaves as a story is emerging suggesting that his family got rich from AAU basketball. We’ll say this: nothing much would surprise at this point, but he did attend class while he was at Duke, took no paper classes, and no one we’re ware of has...

Grayson Allen’s Legacy

Grayson Allen’s Legacy

Winning games takes a lot of work but understanding and accepting yourself takes far more. Now that Duke’s out of the NCAA tournament, that means that several players are done. Marvin Bagley said that he “wasn’t even thinking” about the NBA which was the decent thing to say even if it wasn't entirely true. It would be a major shock if he did anything other than turn pro. Same for Wendell Carter. Carter had a subpar final game at Duke (assuming that he does go) and seeing how upset he was by his poor performance was touching. In K parlance, that guy unpacked his bags. As impressed...
