Tuesday Afternoon Chart of Great Optimism

The Only Colors — I'm on record as being quite worried about how Michigan State matches up with Duke. I think Derrick Nix will struggle to score consistently against a defender like Mason Plumlee. He may be able to get decent position on Plumlee, but he's going to have a hard time over a 6'10" defender with good athleticism. (Going the other direction, hopefully Plumlee will struggle to score in the post, as well. He was just 4 for 7 from the field against Creighton's 6'9", 260-pound Gregory Echenique on Sunday, as he was unable to get position near the lane.) At the 4-spot, Adreian Payne is really ...

In a game that featured more fouls than field goals, it was the Blue Devils that prevailed, collecting a 66-50 victory to send the program back to the Sweet 16. The 50 points for the Bluejays represented their lowest output for the season. Creighton was whistled for 26 fouls and made just 16 field goals. “There’s different flow...

Duke downs the Hokies 85-57

Credit: CHUCK LIDDY DURHAM—The senior night festivities for Mason Plumlee, Ryan Kelly and Seth Curry actually started Monday night, when Mike and Mickie Krzyzewski and their daughters took them out to dinner. Before the game, Plumlee paid attention to every song the pep band played, trying to soak in the sights and sounds of his last game in Cameron. So when the ball was tipped, it wasn’t easy to cancel out the background noise and focus on the game. “It’s hard,” Plumlee said, “u...

More on the all-ACC, POY race

ACC Now | News & Observer — In today's print edition, I wrote about the topsy-turvy all-ACC situation, where it's possible only one member of the preseason all-ACC team may make first-team all-ACC at the end of the season, and the player-of-the-year race remains wide open. Additionally, I checked in with tempo-free stat expert Ken Pomeroy to get his statistical take on the ACC awards race, with Mason Plumlee leading the pack, and I also put together my ballot if I had to vote today -- which, thankfully, I do not. Pomeroy picks a national player of the year based on a proprietary formula that combines player performance w...

No longer Plumlee's 'little brother,' Alex Len asserted himself against Duke

Washington Post — Alex Len emerged from the fray battered and sweating, the white sleeve on his Maryland Pride jersey dirty after students tugged on the fabric near midcourt and clung to his arms like tree limbs.
