Syracuse’s Steve Ishmael added to Biletnikoff Award watch list

Racking up yards and receptions at this rate will do that. Senior Syracuse Orange wide receiver Steve Ishmael has been added to the 2017 Biletnikoff Award Watch List, according to a release from the Tallahassee Quarterback Club Foundation on Tuesday. The Biletnikoff Award, which is given to the country’s most outstanding receiver, regardless of position, added 10 players total. However, the headliner is Ishmael, who currently leads the nation in receptions with 45. He’s also third overall in receiving yards at 512. Just four games in, both totals are already nearing...

Stuff and Shenanigans: ColoraD’Oh

Stuff and Shenanigans: ColoraD’Oh

A bunch of Washington things we thought were bad are maybe not bad? It’s almost like football teams are dynamic apparatuses formed by dozens of human beings who are learning and growing each day. Hello and welcome. I never know what to do with this introductory paragraph; it’s like holding your hands in a photograph. This is partly because (A) I don’t want to give away any of my upcoming hot Washington Football takes, and (B) I write it after everything else and at that point am too mentally exhausted to come up with something witty or relevant. I suppose then, that we should just get...

FBI College Basketball Investigation: The Purdue Effects

FBI College Basketball Investigation: The Purdue Effects

Purdue’s marquee home non-conference game just got a lot more interesting. Corruption seems like it has always been part of college basketball. It seems like every team that gets busted for having a bagman hides 10 more that have secret money behind the scenes. While at times it feels like everyone is dirty, there are some schools and coaches that have a “reputation” for skirting the legalities of the NCAA. Today it was federal law that took a larger stand against school, as a few assistant coaches were actually arrested on corruption charges: Investigators have been looking at...

The View From Section 7

A Twitter-esque recap of the Kansas football game against West Virginia. PREGAME Got the folks coming up from Wichita today for the game. Not sure why. But whatever, we’ll have fun regardless of the outcome. Checked out the drumline for a few minutes by the Campanile. Gotta get to the stadium early today as we’ve got some sideline pregame passes from the ticket office. They walk you down the visitor’s sideline and you get to watch the players go through their pregame drills. Now they’re asking for volunteers to help with the flag on the field for the national anthem. Dad and I...

Pinto's Points: West Virginia’s defense, two-headed monster, and more thoughts following the Kansas game

Pinto's Points: West Virginia’s defense, two-headed monster, and more thoughts following the Kansas game

Apologies on the absence last week, I'm currently indisposed somewhere in the eastern hemisphere and think the missus would've neutered me if I'd tried to justify writing a follow up for Delaware State. Conference play started this week though, meaning I was able to sneak away for a few minutes to jot down some thoughts on our 56-34 way-closer-than-it-needed-to-be win over Kansas in Lawrence. Let's get to it.. The defense... My god. I don't even know where to start with them. Actually, wait, I do. Let's start with the 367 rushing yards and 7.3 ypc we gave up to a Kansas team that came in...

Iowa Hawkeyes in the NFL: Week 3 Results

Some former Hawks were hard at work over the weekend. Another week of NFL play is in the books, and once again, some of your favorite former Iowa Hawkeyes were right in the thick of the Sunday action. Here is what their hard work yielded in Week 3: George Kittle, Tight End, 49ers George was targeted three times but only hauled in one catch for eight yards in a 41-39 loss to the Rams. His production has been minimal thus far, as it’s starting to look like this offense does not rely on the tight end position very much in the passing game. Micah Hyde, Cornerback, Bills Micah was in on...

Rutgers & B1G Attendance: a good week and it might get better

Rutgers returns home to host Ohio State and #OperationScarlet. No, I don’t understand, either. Around the college football world Attendance. People do take notice. There is actually a Twitter account that literally ridicules USF Football’s attendance. The Bulls, former opponents in the old Big East, play at Raymond James Stadium, a pro venue. And this year they are 4-0. And are averaging just under 29,000 per game. Their largest crowd was for Illinois when they drew 35,404. Such is life for a winner in the American Athletic Conference. And look at Boise State,...

Former Texas basketball target Brian Bowen apparently implicated in massive NCAA corruption scandal

This is how a recruitment can turn on a dime (many, many, many dimes). On Tuesday, the college basketball world was rocked with the news that the FBI has been investigating fraud and corruption in the NCAA since 2015, resulting in 10 charges, including four against assistant coaches, and more news to follow. And one of the players involved appears to be former Texas Longhorns basketball target Brian Bowen, a top-20 national prospect and the nation’s No. 5 small forward who starred at La Lumiere School in Indiana and signed with the Louisville Cardinals. Texas seemed to be on the outside...

College Football Random Thoughts From Around the Country: Struggle Wins!

College Football Random Thoughts From Around the Country: Struggle Wins!

We are a third of the way through the regular season. The topic this week is Struggle Wins! [I stole that from Funny Maine] It seems to be a recurring theme among supposedly elite teams who have been playing neck-and-neck with lesser teams but then score a bunch of points at the end and make it look like a big win. And of course then the impressionable bozos at ESPN go all gaga over the final score. On another front, several teams were walking around all proud, wagging their big ol’ butts because they were 3-0. Well, now that second digit is a 1 and the planet Earth came rushing at them...

Former South Carolina assistant Lamont Evans arrested in FBI college basketball corruption investigation

Evans has been charged with accepting cash bribes, starting back when he was with the Gamecocks. Former South Carolina assistant coach Lamont Evans is one of several individuals arrested as part of an FBI fraud and corruption investigation focused on college basketball, according to filings published today. Evans currently coaches at Oklahoma State, where he has been since the 2016-17 season. However, FBI filings point to him accepting bribes to steer players toward certain agents/apparel companies as early as March 3, 2016, when he was still employed by South Carolina (referred to as...

Louisville basketball appears tied to ‘pay for play’ corruption scandal

Another dark morning for Cardinal basketball fans. Probably the worst part about this “scandal period” of the last two years or so is that every time it’s felt like things are settling down or comfortably quiet, something unpredictably awful breaks and becomes a national news story. Welcome to Tuesday morning. The FBI has announced that it has caught as many as 10 college basketball assistant coaches, agents and sneaker executives in a corruption case related to wire fraud and money laundering. At the center of the case are players who had their full scholarship and full cost of...

After a weird offseason, it is almost time to start thinking about Gonzaga

Basketball isn’t here, but it is almost here. We aren’t quite there yet, but pretty soon, all of our lives are going to get that much more exciting, because for the first time in school history, the Zags will open the year as a team who was in the national title game. That in itself would be more impressive if we didn’t have one of the more odd “offseasons” in recent memory. Gonzaga’s first man off the bench Zach Collins declared for the NBA Draft, and he was joined by second-team All-American point guard Nigel Williams-Goss. Throw in a graduated (finally) Przemek Karnowski and...

WSU bowl projections: Mosey down to San Antonio

Things tend to get better when you’re 4-0 and ranked in the top-20. Hey, would you look at that! Another comfortable win over an opponent you should comfortably win over. I could get used to this kind of thing. With the victory over the Nevada Wolf Pack, the Cougs jump to 4-0 on the season and No. 16 in the AP and Coaches poll. One would expect, then, for WSU to look better in the eyes of bowl prognosticators throughout college footballdom. Your expectations would be correct. Mostly.
