Syracuse softball hangs tight with North Carolina in 1-1 split

Syracuse softball hangs tight with North Carolina in 1-1 split

Despite a cancellation, still a reasonably productive weekend for the Orange. The Syracuse Orange softball team went into the weekend needing at least one win against the top-five North Carolina Tar Heels. Lucky for them, they pulled it off, earning a 3-1 victory on Saturday at Skytop Softabll Stadium. In the second game of the series on Sunday, SU fell 11-10. As a result of the longer first game, the second game of the scheduled doubleheader was cancelled -- the third cancelled game for Syracuse last week (along with two vs. Siena on Wednesday). Saturday’s contest saw the Orange start...

Florida sits on top for Tillman after offered: Florida Gators recruiting

Last week was a big week for the Florida Gators recruiting classes as the coaches were able to get out on the road and see prospects during the evaluation period. While out on the road the Gators offered 2019 safety Marcus Tillman Jr. (6-3, 203, Orlando, FL. Jones) after receivers coach Kerry Dixon visited his school. “Coach Dixon,” Tillman said of the coach who offered him. “He talked to my coach and said that they liked my film and I was good at making open space tackles. He said that I’m quick and he loves my athleticism. That I’m also a big safety at 6’3, 203.” This... Read...

Spring Game Thoughts

Spring Game Thoughts

I’m not gonna lie: there’s not a ton anybody can say based on Saturday’s action. But that never stopped us before! Ah, the spring ‘game,’ the saddest oasis in the already sad desert of nine months sans football. Spring games are already dangerous for fans and pundits - an odd confection of small sample size, weird lineup combinations, and general conservatism. But this year’s spring game was perhaps the least insightful I’ve ever kinda-sorta-seen. Consider: Spring practice has been closed to the media, meaning fans have no real sense of which players they should be keeping an...

Austin Fontaine and Evan Gregory just gave Maryland’s recruiting class a huge boost

Austin Fontaine and Evan Gregory just gave Maryland’s recruiting class a huge boost

This is the Maryland Minute, a short story followed by a roundup of Terps-related news. Maryland football entered Saturday’s spring game with the No. 51 recruiting class in the country. That class consisted of four players, none of which currently have four-star status on 247Sports Composite rankings. Then, Maryland gained eight stars of pure power up front. Guard Evan Gregory’s commitment came first, then defensive tackle Austin Fontaine’ announced his. Both are big gets for the Terps, and both attend DeMatha Catholic High School just down the road from Maryland’s campus. From an...

Missouri’s embrace of the nickel back gives the Tigers’ back 7 impressive depth

Missouri’s embrace of the nickel back gives the Tigers’ back 7 impressive depth

Here are today’s Mizzou Links. Missouri head coach Barry Odom and defensive coordinator DeMontie Cross made a concerted effort to get the nickel back more involved this year in spring football; it is a sensible change given the involvement of slot receivers in today’s college football offense — it’s also a position Mizzou has had success with in the past — and it maximizes the depth Missouri has coming into 2017, too. With not only the change, but also Kaleb Prewett’s star turn, suddenly Mizzou is two-deep with starter-caliber guys at each linebacker and each safety...

Ryan Edwards to Forego Final Year of Eligibility

Ryan decides to enter the workforce Well, the good news is Ryan Edwards won’t be transferring. The bad news is he’s decided to forego his final season of eligibility to enter the workforce. Edwards is scheduled to graduate in May with a degree in broadcasting and last summer worked as an intern for SWX, a Spokane local sports channel. The 7’1” 300 lb Kalispell, Montana native was expected to redshirt his freshman year when he arrived at Gonzaga for the 13-14 season. An early season back injury to Sam Dower forced him into action that season, despite his missing...

The Hokie 2017 Spring Game, and Some Other Things to Consider

The Hokie 2017 Spring Game, and Some Other Things to Consider

The Hokie Spring Game was Saturday. The last event and first event of each season. 2016 is over, and 2017 is now fully under way. Let’s look at some issues from a more sideways perspective. The other news services have their observations top 5 take away articles and such. I guess if we are following down the road of the obvious we’d put up our top five items and they’d look much like the remainder of the top five lists. While I am not putting such things out of reach, I am considering that my life has often been seeing things outside of the box and from less obvious angles. ...

Auburn Baseball Is Proving to SEC How Dangerous It Can Be

The best surprise  to come out of Auburn this spring has been a rejuvenated baseball program. And Auburn keeps on rolling along as the No.10 Tigers defeated No.11 Arkansas in a three game home-stand over the weekend in what was possibly the biggest series at Plainsman Park in the past seven years.  Sunday’s game marked […]The post Auburn Baseball Is Proving to SEC How Dangerous It Can Be appeared first on Track Em Tigers, Auburns oldest and most read independent blog.

Duke Recruiting: Another Name To Follow

A class of 2018 prospect. Jahvon Quinerly (2018) can’t help this year but the rising point guard could be the best point guard of his class and he’s getting ready to cut his list down. Currently he’s looking at Duke, Arizona, Kansas, Villanova, Virginia, Maryland, Seton Hall, Notre Dame, Stanford and Cal, according to Zagsblog.com, and he has an interesting comment about Duke: “They’re trying to evaluate me this first session, just see how I’m playing, get to know me better” he said. “[An offer] would mean a lot. I grew up looking up to Kyrie [Irving] so knowing that I...

The Chronicle Looks At Duke Athletes And Academic Choices

The Chronicle Looks At Duke Athletes And Academic Choices

A “bad” major at Duke is a great major at most schools. The Chronicle has an article up taking a critical look at how seriously Duke athletes take academics. The crux of it is that athletes don’t select the most demanding majors as frequently as non-athletes do. That’s not exactly paper classes, is it? It’s a reasonable discussion to have but our feeling about it is the same as we’ve said from time to time about minor issues athletes have at times like smoking a joint or going to bars when they’re underage. It’s within the normal experience for college students so it’s...

Juan Dixon Update

Juan Dixon Update

One of our favorite ACC players ever is starting a new chapter. We didn’t care much for Gary Williams when he coached at Maryland. He was not particularly likable. We remember one story where he berated a ballboy. His A.D., Debbie Yow, even ordered him into anger management therapy. He was just not a particularly nice man, not that he cared (and there’s no reason why he should have). Having said that though, we had great admiration for his ability to go his own way on the recruiting trail. He had an ability to pick up on recruits other coaches tended to miss. The greatest guy like...

Tony Bradley will declare for the NBA draft; won’t hire an agent

After one season at Carolina, Tony Bradley will test the NBA waters. Despite only coming off the bench during his first season at Carolina, Tony Bradley will test the NBA waters initially without an agent. The freshman out of Bartow, Florida, could return to Carolina if he doesn’t receive the feedback he seeks at the next level. Bradley was quick to say after the Tar Heels cut down the nets in Phoenix that he would be at least be making the jump to see what the NBA would say. His potential was always readily apparent, even as a substitute for the Heels his freshman year. Many hoped that...

Oklahoma Sooners Football Recruiting: Arjei Henderson De-Commits From OU

The 2019 WR committed in February. Oklahoma lost half of its nascent 2019 class on Sunday evening when Richmond, Texas wide receiver Arjei Henderson announced his decision to de-commit from OU. New Future pic.twitter.com/wRYNQ7USCv— Hendi™ (@king_hendi) April 24, 2017 Henderson announced he was committing to OU way, way back in February, along with Theo Wease who is, for now, still on board. Wease joined the 2019 class on the same day as Henderson, so it remains to be seen if Henderson’s decision will have any effect on him. This may be a simple case of a kid not understanding...

Purdue Baseball Sweeps First Big Ten Series since 2013

Purdue Baseball Sweeps First Big Ten Series since 2013

Purdue needed some brooms at Alexander Field this weekend as they swept away the Illini. It appears the nadir of Purdue baseball is over under first year coach Mark Wasikowski. Since winning the Big Ten with a 17-7 record in 2012 the Boilers went a dismal 20-75 in the following four seasons. The last two have been especially bad, as Purdue was 6-17 in 2015 and 2-22 in 2016. After this past weekend Purdue has now won more Big Ten games this year than in the previous two combined. Purdue swept Illinois in three games at Alexander Field for its first ever Big Ten weekend series sweep since...

Report: Michigan Hockey Hires Mel Pearson As Its Next Head Coach

The hire means there will still be a familiar face leading the hockey program. It seems that Michigan fans have gotten their wish: Mel Pearson, the obvious candidate to replace Red Berenson and a longtime Michigan assistant before coaching at his alma mater for six years, has agreed to return to Ann Arbor and take over in Red Berenson’s stead - this according to a report by ESPN’s John Buccigross. Washington softball uses long ball to take 2 from Alabama

Tide pitching gives up four homers in hard luck series against Pac-12 power Revenge is best served cold Washington’s football team couldn’t beat Alabama last season, but the Huskies softball team not only managed to take two games from the Tide in Tuscaloosa over the weekend, they now own the all-time series with Bama 6-5. More importantly for them, they exacted a measure of revenge (or two) against Alabama, the team that has eliminated them in the NCAA softball regionals the past two years. Game 1 Friday night’s game was decided by a two run homer in the seventh that gave U-Dub a...
