SDSU vs. Arizona final score: Wildcats take down Aztecs 61-59, take home Maui Championship

Arizona claimed the Maui crown in a very tight, defensive-oriented game. In a game that saw 13 lead changes, the Arizona Wildcats were able to pull out a win over the San Diego State Aztecs with their defense. Arizona won by a score of 61-59 to win the school's second Maui Invitational Championship. After trailing for the majority of the first half, Arizona closed on an 8-2 run to take a 32-31 lead into the locker room. Stanley Johnson had nine points and seven boards in the first half. The freshman was Arizona's best player all night, finishing with 18 points and nine rebounds. As...

Happy Thanksgiving from RCT

Wishing you the best on this holiday. As I'm up right now prepping the turkey to go in the oven, I thought I would let you guys know what to expect in terms of coverage during the holiday.  In the spirit of giving thanks, we've decided to thank all our contributors by giving them the day off.  A few have already scheduled their articles for the usual time, so you will still have some content today.  In a tradition I started last year and decided to continue this year, I'll be putting together a Thanksgiving-centric News and Notes sometime this morning.  With the KU game and all the...

Gonzaga's Josh Perkins feared to have broken jaw

The talented freshman may miss significant time... As time ran down on Gonzaga's win over Georgia at Madison Square Garden, the Bulldogs suffered a potential injury that could alter the 2014-15 season in a big way.  Prized 2014 freshman Josh Perkins suffered what looks to be a severe injury as Georgia's Kenny Gaines delivered a kick to Perkins' jaw.  Here's a look at the play: The officials decided that this was a standard foul and did not punish Gaines with a flagrant or technical or anything above and beyond the norm.  After watching this once, it is beyond clear that this was not a...

Instant Recap and Postgame Reaction: Cal beats Cal Poly 72-52

Cal wins what was a close game for 30 minutes against a Cal Poly team that controlled tempo early. In a game much closer than the final score, Cal got it going later for a 20 point victory over the Cal Poly Mustangs. The Beats struggled early, and held only a seven point lead due to struggles from behind the three point and Cal Poly determining the tempo. David Kravish and Tyrone "Smoochie" Wallace kept the game going our way in the early going, with seven points apiece. When the second half hit though, Cal Poly upped their tempo, which jolted the Bears enough as the lead got down to as low...

Gonzaga 88, Georgia 76: 'Dawgs Prove Not Ready For Primetime.

Georgia weathered a stormy start, kept it close for a time, but ultimately proved no match for #10 Gonzaga, falling 88-76 in their first of two games in the NIT Season Tip-Off Tournament, It's hard to isolate what Gonzaga did that Georgia couldn't stop. The list would take some time, but any summary would  have to begin with an inability to force Zags' point guard Kevin Pangos out of his comfort zone. Pangos started hot and never really lost control of the game, finishing with 22 points on a perfect 10/10 shooting. Pangos's ball distribution often found Kentucky transfer Kyle Wiltjer, who...

2014 Maui Invitational: Kansas State vs. Pitt - Game Recap

Tired isn't an excuse...but it is a reason. K-State finally breaks mentally and physically, and the results weren't pretty. This is going to be a quick one...there's no point in over-analyzing what just went down. The Kansas State Wildcats (3-3) went into the half down one to the Pittsburgh Panthers (4-2), thanks in large part to Thomas Gipson's effort late in the half (finished with 13 pts, 6 reb). Pittsburgh came out of their locker room in the second half; I'm not sure the Wildcats ever did. The Panthers proceeded to body-punch us throughout the first 10 minutes, then stepped on us the...

Postgame Thread: Gonzaga beats Georgia but may have lost Josh Perkins

It wasn't pretty, but the Bulldogs got it done... It was a matter of time before we had a "come back to reality" game.  Tonight was that game.  Luckily, the reality check still resulted in a win but it was a game that will result in a number of question marks for the Bulldogs that leave Madison Square garden with a pretty sloppy win over the Georgia Bulldogs.  Mark Few's squad will move on to play St. John's on Friday in the finals of the NIT Season Tip-Off. The first several minutes felt like it would be a continuation of that dream.  The Bulldogs built a ten point lead in no time and...

Auburn Edges Oregon St.

The Tigers clutch shooting down the stretch (and a pair of blown calls) out-distance Beavers Auburn edged Oregon St. 71-69 to take third place in the Heavyweight Bracket of the MGM Grand Main Event tournament Wednesday night. KT Harrell scored 8 of his team and co-game high 20 points in a matter of less than 2 minutes to bring the Tigers from 1 point down with 4 1/2 minutes left to take a 66-61 lead, and then Auburn buried 5 consecutive free throws, the last 4 by KC Ross Miller, who connected on 7 of 8 from the line, and it was enough to stave off a Beaver rally of back to back 3 pointers by...

Rick Pitino Talks Cleveland State Game, 700th Victory

Video available here Opening Statement Well, it was not a pretty game. What I basically told them at halftime was, "look guys, you're pouting to the officials about being fouled, and you're using that as an excuse." It not only looks bad, but that's the way Virginia and Pittsburgh are going to play. We watched them play Kentucky last year, and with about three minutes left in the game, they had a good chance of winning. And then the year before they almost beat Vandy. We knew how they play against great teams. He's done a fabulous job with that for a long time. I told them that what was...

Week 14 College Football Schedule

Everything you need to plan a special holiday weekend of college football viewing. Rivalry weekend is upon us. For anyone that emerges from their tryptophan-induced slumber Thursday afternoon, you get to choose between watching a pair of four-loss SEC teams or a Big 12 game with possible playoff implications. A very good TCU team that currently sits just outside the magic four team playoff  will see if they can make a statement against the rapidly improving Longhorns. On Black Friday, the Huskers and Hawkeyes headline the morning lineup. Husker fans will be hoping their leftover turkey...

Sunflower Showdown: 1934

Ahead of this weekend's game against Kansas, we take a look back at Sunflower Showdowns of years gone by, including the game from 1934. The early 1930s were not a great time in the state of Kansas. The Crash of 1929 had segued into the Great Depression and devastated the lives of thousands of citizens, including students at Kansas State. Unable to support themselves financially, many students were forced to take part-time jobs, but with staggering unemployment in town, some had no choice but to drop out, at least temporarily. One bright spot through those dark days had been the football...

Utah Volleyball Knocks off Oregon

The No. 23 Utes drop the No. 13 Ducks in four sets for their fifth victory over a Top 25 team, a new school record. The Jon M. Huntsman Center is home sweet home for No. 23 Utah, as they defeated a top-ranked team for a school record fifth time this season, knocking off the No. 13-ranked Oregon Ducks in four sets (25-23, 17-25, 25-16, 25-21) Tuesday night. "I do not even know how to explain this one," said Utah head coach Beth Launiere. "I was nervous about this match and worried about [Oregon's] speed. You could see there in the second set, they are like their football team. They can...

No serious challenge from the Hawkeyes' visitor tonight as the Hawkeyes roll. Another cupcake, another victory. It's an automatic process at Carver-Hawkeye in November, and the Hawkeyes did not disappoint in front of the home crowd tonight. Your final score is 70-49, good guys. This wasn't a pretty win. Iowa turned it into a laugher late, but there was about 20 straight minutes of action within a narrow window of margins between a 10 and 17-point lead. Still, the tone was set early with a 16-0 Iowa run, and after NIU "hung around" down about a dozen or so, Iowa erased all doubt with another...

Making the Grade: Utah vs Arizona

How did the Utes grade out in Saturday's 42-10 debacle? Saturday's game was disappointing to say the least, as the Utes stumbled and bumbled their way to a 42-10 defeat at the hands of the Arizona Wildcats. As you can guess the grades were pretty ugly for this one. Offense: D- The fact that Arizona's defense outscored the Utes offense 14-10 is all you need to know. The only reason I don't give the offense a big fat F is the play of Devontae Booker. Every week Booker comes up big for the Utes, which is saying something as he is the only weapon opposing defenses have to prepare for. Booker...

Spaulding Roundup: #Hundley4Heisman Talk, Senior Day, & UCLA Football vs the Cardinal Lines

As the Bruins continue to prepare for the all important game Friday against Stanford (and a great Thanksgiving meal), we have news and notes from Spaulding Field and beyond.
