Texas A&M Baseball Grabs #1 Spot in USA Today Poll

Texas A&M baseball clinched the #1 spot in the USA Today Coaches poll after coming out of their weekend series with Missouri holding a 27-2 record (7-2 SEC). Last week the LSU Tigers held the number 1 spot, but slid down to number 4 this week after dropping two games to Kentucky during their series over the weekend. With over half of the season in the books, Texas A&M will continue to rely on their clutch hitting as they get ready to face the 9-19 SFA Lumberjacks on Tuesday, before hitting the road for a weekend series with the 18-10 Kentucky Wildcats. While Kentucky currently sits...

NCAA Tournament: How Have "Syracuse Regional" Winners Fared in the Final Four?

Michigan State is the seventh Syracuse regional winner since the Carrier Dome opened. Syracuse is never going to host the Final Four. That's both true and okay, since a) it's not the type of city destination that earns those types of events, and b) even if it were, the infrastructure is not there to support an event that size. BUT, Syracuse's Carrier Dome has hosted seven different NCAA Tournament East Regionals -- the latest culminating yesterday with Michigan State's overtime victory over Louisville. The Spartans are the biggest surprise in this year's Final Four, and now the question...

Washington Football Spring Practices - Day 1

Day One of Washington's spring practice sessions is in the books. Here's what the beat writers on hand had to say... Washington kicked off their first official off-season practice session this morning, the first of 15 culminating in what's being called the Spring Preview on Saturday, April 25th.  The beat writers were on hand, and here's some of what they've been reporting: Wouldn't necessarily read much into it, but K.J. Carta-Samuels is working with No. 1 offense early in 1st practice. Jeff Lindquist w/ twos. — Adam Jude (@A_Jude) March 30, 2015 #UW true frosh QB Jake Browning...

Utah State vs Utah football game moved to September 11th

Looks like we'll be tailgating one day earlier for the Utah State football game this upcoming season. It was announced today by the U that the game with Utah State is being moved up a day, from Saturday, September 12th, to Friday, September 11th. The move was requested by the Pac-12 Conference and the Pac-12 TV partners. The game will be broadcast on national TV at 7pm local time, but the channel has not been announced at this point - my guess is that it'll be Fox Sports1. The USU game is the 2nd game of the season for the Utes, following their opener at home against Michigan, eight days...

Maryland softball drops pair to Ohio State

After a remarkable comeback Friday night to grab the series opener against Ohio State, Maryland was one out away from winning their second consecutive Big Ten softball series. And then... The 2015 edition of Maryland softball under first year head Courtney Deifel is much improved from their 2014 season. But, the team has also lived on the edge for much of their success. Four of the team's first 33 games went to extra innings and Maryland won them all including one in which they scored three runs in the seventh just to send the game to extra innings. The Terps had also won three other games...

Rick Pitino says Montrezl Harrell and Terry Rozier are both '100 percent' going pro

Rick Pitino put to bed (or attempted to) any hopes Louisville fans may have had of either Montrezl Harrell or Terry Rozier opting to return to U of L for another season during his end of the year press conference on Monday afternoon. "They're both leaving, yes, 100 percent," Pitino said. "It's the right thing to do for both of them. You all may have some doubts about Terry, but I don't." Harrell was honored on Senior Night this season, so his departure comes as little surprise, but Rozier had been non-committal either way as recently as Sunday afternoon. "Terry looks at home and sees his...

Syracuse Basketball: Chris McCullough To The NBA?

The forward hasn't made a decision yet. Syracuse Orange forward Chris McCullough is still considering entering the 2015 NBA Draft later this spring, according to syracuse.com. From the syracuse.com report: "Right now, he's concentrating on school and rehabbing," his uncle Andre McCullough said Monday. "He and his mom and dad are going to sit down at some point and talk about it. It's been on his mind. A lot of people have been asking him about it." McCullough averaged 9.3 points and 6.9 rebounds per game in 16 games this season. His freshman season ended when he tore his ACL during a win...

Nebraska Pitchers Earn National Honor

That marathon game against Texas on Saturday allowed Nebraska to get some national recognition. The Husker are ranked in at least one poll now, as D1Baseball.com has them at #18. That and the pitchers involved in the marathon were given a national award as Louisville Slugger's National Players Of The Week. It was the first time in award history that four pitchers from the same school were given such an award. Nebraska’s Kyle Kubat, Jake Hohensee, Colton Howell and Jeff Chesnut earned the honor following their 15-inning shutout against Texas on Sunday that included nine-straight no-hit...

Syracuse Basketball: Rakeem Christmas Named AP Third-Team All-American

The awards keep coming for the SU big man. The Associated Press released its All-American teams Monday afternoon, naming Syracuse Orange center Rakeem Christmas to the third-team. Christmas was joined on the third-team by Gonzaga's Kevin Pangos and Kyle Wiltjer, Iowa State's Georges Niang, and Oklahoma's Buddy Hield. Christmas was previously named a second-team All-American by USA Today. He also earned All-ACC first team and All-ACC defensive team honors earlier this month. The big man averaged 17.5 points and 9.1 rebounds per game in 2014-15, leading Syracuse to an 18-win regular season....

Interactive WSU spring football preview: The defense

Who do you want to see step up on the Cougar defense to replace the departures of Daquawn Brown and Xavier Cooper? While the WSU offense has some questions marks, it has shown consistent improvement throughout the Mike Leach era. However, the defense has been a bit of a roller coaster and is going to be led by a new defensive coordinator, looking to replace 5 starters, and dealing with the recent departure of yet another promising defensive back. I went through a bit of my own emotional roller coaster when Xavier Cooper declared for the draft, being very happy and excited for the big man...

2015 Powerade Jam Fest: Event Schedule, TV Channel, Live Stream info

Jalen Brunson will be competing in two events, so you'll want to tune in! The Powerade Jam Fest is the prelude to the McDonald's All-American game, and features three events that are familiar to anyone who has watched any of the professional All-Star weekends. The skills competition, three-point shooting contest, and dunk contest are fun to watch and can provide fans with bragging rights, even if they're inconsequential at the end of the day. Tonight, Villanova Wildcats signee Jalen Brunson will play a part in all three events, even if he's only directly competing in two of them. Brunson...

Top Dog bracket: (7) Garlic frankfurter vs. (10) Weinie

Who ya got? Garlic Frankfurter LeonPowe: Who doesn't like garlic? Vampires and other evil doers, that's who. This dog is buried on the menu, and yet really nice snap and garlic flavor which isn't overpowering. (also endorsed by Berkelium97) LEastCoastBears: the "German" Frankfurter has apparently been renamed "Garlic" Frankfurter. Pretty sure it's the same dog...the Top Dog website calls it German Frankfurter, by the way. @BenAtJob Top Dog Rankings right? 1. German Frankfurter. 2. Kielbasa 3. Linguica 4. WLAX: No. 7 Orange Fall to No. 6 Duke in Fourth Loss of the Season

Syracuse faced a tough Duke squad in Durham, North Carolina and came up on the short end of another one-goal loss. In another Top-10 matchup, Syracuse (8-4, 1-2 ACC) stuck with the Blue Devils (10-1, 4-1 ACC), never being down more than two goals after the first half, but failed to score in the last nine minutes to surrender their third one-goal loss of the season. Kayla Treanor led the Orange with three goals, bringing her total for the season to 28, but it wouldn't be enough to propel her team to victory, unfortunately. It was all Duke for the first 20+ minutes of the game. The team went...

Recruiting Roundup: The recruitment of Thomas Bryant comes into focus

Indiana is in prime position to land the quality big man as Tom Crean continues a last ditch effort to beef up inside for the 2015-16 season. News, notes, and any other tidbits that deal with Hoosier targets (Note: With the high school seasons coming to a close and AAU seasons a ways off, the Recruiting Roundup will be posted with a bit less frequency, as there are no new statistics to pass along. In the mean time, the Roundup's focus will be on news relating to how the 2015 class rounds into shape and its impact on the current IUBB roster.) - Scholarship numbers have always been a hot...

This Week In Texas Tech Sports: 3/23-3/29

Spring Game stuff, Baseball, and a Basketball commitment highlight this week in Texas Tech Sports. Texas Tech had their spring football game in Grande Communications Stadium in Midland this Saturday. It had it's ups, it had it's downs, but ultimately we won't know anything substantial about our team until the fall. It was more or less a glorified practice, but it still held some small previews of what we might see next year. Our fearless leader Wes posted a solid writeup on it here. 24/7's Michael LaBarre reported that 3-star JUCO PG Devon Thomas has committed to play for Tubby Smith and...

(Temporarily) Moving on: Early thoughts on the 2015-16 Gonzaga Bulldogs

The Bulldogs look to be loaded in the frontcourt but full of questions outside... It is remarkably clear from my early attitude at work that I am not ready to discuss the conclusion of the 2014-15 season quite yet.  As usual, when the basketball season ends, I am overcome by several emotions: - Grief that we will not longer have the departing seniors (multiplied by 100x this year) - Generally upset over how abrupt the tournament can be and how quickly everything can change - Summer sports depression (i.e. baseball starting and having to hear about the same NFL story over and over and...
