Michigan State's Brad Salem sees 'pretty even' competition between Andrew Maxwell, Connor Cook

Grand Rapids Press — Comparing Maxwell's first season as a starter to Cousins' first season is interesting. Maxwell went 7-6 last season with 13 TD passes, 9 interceptions and 2,606 yards, completing 234 of 446 passes. In 2009, Cousins was on a 6-7 Michigan State team, and he threw 19 TD passes, 9 interceptions for 2,680 yards on 198-of-328 passing.

The Only Colors — On the first play of Saturday's spring game, Andrew Maxwell dropped back and threw a deep pass across the middle to John Jakubik. It was dropped. One play in, things seemed different, yet the same. The spring game is the third scrimmage, but with divided teams. So it's important not to make any sweeping declarations.
