Alabama's Jesse Williams & Eddie Lacy: First Round or Second Round?

Roll 'Bama RollJesse Williams: He might be big (6-4, 323) but at least he is fast (4.94 in the 40). With a story and a look that may have come right out of Hollywood, Williams has been a fan favorite in Tuscaloosa the moment he stepped on campus. Originally from Brisbane, Australia, he grew up playing rugby and basketball in Australia before taking up football at the age of 15. He landed at tiny Arizona Western College before signing with Nick Saban in 2011. Besides great size and speed, what else is there to like about Jesse? How about his versatility? In his first year, Williams earned a starting...

Field performance rather than Pro Day may make difference for Tide's Jesse Williams

Anniston StarJesse Williams started for two years for two national championship teams, but the NFL draft buzz surrounding him concerns a blip of fewer than five seconds March 13. That's when Alabama hosted a Pro Day for NFL scouts to work out Crimson Tide stars eligible for the draft. Williams was timed in the 40-yard dash at 4.9 seconds, which seems awfully swift for a 325-pound defensive tackle. In addition, he bench pressed 225 pounds 30 times in repetition.

Spring Look-Ahead: Defensive Line

Roll 'Bama Roll — Of the three prominent departees, starters Jesse Williams and Damian Square and key reserve Quenton Dial, only Williams, a rare combination of strength and quickness, looks to be difficult to replace. But Bama will not be hurting at the nose. Brandon Ivory already proved himself in 2012, spelling Williams all season and being pressed into greater service when the starter was hampered by injury late in the season. The Tide run D stayed strong with Ivory in the middle, the only real measure of a nose tackle's effectiveness. Darrin Lake spelled Ivory when Williams was injured in 2012, and...

Bama DL, LB inactive at Combine

Roll 'Bama Roll — What started out as one of Bama's largest NFL Combine classes in history has been relatively quiet throughout this year's event, with many begging pardon of the NFL's coaches and scouts while mending from injuries (or subsequent surgeries) suffered during the season. On the defensive side of the ball, the Crimson Tide was well represented (in theory), with expected first-rounder Jesse Williams leading the contingent of Bama defensive front 7 players. Filling out the group were defensive linemen Damion Square and Quinton Dial, as well as linebacker Nico Johnson. None of the DL or LB p...
