Assessing Arizona’s scholarship situation after Emmanuel Akot’s departure

Assessing Arizona’s scholarship situation after Emmanuel Akot’s departure

The thing about roster crunches in college basketball is they always seem to work themselves out. The Arizona Wildcats were two players over the 13-scholarship limit for 2019-20 after landing a commitment from Zeke Nnaji in November, but they announced the departure of sophomore forward Emmanuel Akot on Tuesday, putting them at 14 scholarship players for next season. That total includes former walk-on Jake DesJardins, who was put on scholarship this summer but is unlikely to stay scholarship next season, meaning Arizona is down to 13 players. As a refresher, here they are: Brandon...

Free throw shooting, better shot selection key to Arizona’s offensive improvement

The Wildcats shoot a high percentage from the line, but don’t always get there enough The Arizona Wildcats are on pace for their worst offensive season in the Sean Miller era, but they do have a couple strengths on that side of the court. For one, the Wildcats have done a nice job taking care of the ball, ranking 31st in the country in turnover percentage. Arizona’s two primary ball-handlers, Justin Coleman and Brandon Williams, are averaging less than two turnovers a game, while its two leading scorers, Brandon Randolph and Chase Jeter, have a minuscule turnover percentage of 10.9 and...

Report: Oregon unlikely to have forward Kenny Wooten for Thursday game at Arizona

The Arizona Wildcats will put their 4-0 record in Pac-12 play on the line Thursday when they host the preseason conference favorite Oregon Ducks. At least one of Oregon’s top players won’t be in action, due to a season-ending injury, and indications are another starter will also remain sidelined. Per Steve Mims of the Eugene Register-Guard, sophomore forward Kenny Wooten is not expected to play at McKale Center because of a broken jaw that has kept him out of Oregon’s last four games. The 6-foot-9 Wooten has been fitted for a face mask, which he’s started to wear in workouts and...

Justin Coleman ‘hitting his stride’ despite shoulder injury

Justin Coleman ‘hitting his stride’ despite shoulder injury

Justin Coleman admitted he was scared when he tumbled to the floor in Maples Pavilion late in Wednesday’s win at Stanford, causing him to land violently on his troublesome left arm. “(Josh Sharma) caught me off guard with a hard foul and I went down a little bit,” said Coleman, who’s been nursing a dislocated shoulder for two weeks now. “But after that I was all right.” And, somehow, better than ever. Three days later, the senior point guard turned in what Arizona coach Sean Miller called Coleman’s best overall game at the UA. The senior had 13 points and five assists in a...

How Arizona can make the most of Emmanuel Akot’s departure

How Arizona can make the most of Emmanuel Akot’s departure

It’s never a good thing to lose a player, no matter the sport or the team. It’s even more troubling when that loss comes midway through the season, regardless of the circumstances. But in the wake of Emmanuel Akot’s sudden decision to leave the program, a case can be made the Arizona Wildcats could end up benefitting from one less player logging considerable minutes. It helps when the departed player, from a statistical standpoint, had been the worst one among Arizona’s nine- or 10-man rotation. Coach Sean Miller said Tuesday that senior forward Ryan Luther would most likely...

Pac-12 Roundup: Oregon State, Washington and Arizona remain unbeaten in conference paly

Analyzing Week 2 of Pac-12 play After two weeks, disastrous non-conference results for the Pac-12 had given way to a generally thrilling conference slate. While the conference as a whole is still obviously having one of its worst years ever, the amount of teams who look to be in contention for the regular season crown is pretty high. With 14 to 15 games left for everyone, plenty of interesting results are certainly in the future. Here’s our roundup from last week. 1. Arizona Wildcats (13-4, 4-0) Sitting alone atop the conference, and looking to contend for yet another Pac-12 crown, is...
