NBA Draft 2014: Aaron Gordon and Nick Johnson leave Arizona

Aaron Gordon and Nick Johnson are going pro, while Rondae Hollis-Jefferson, Kaleb Tarczewski and Brandon Ashley return. The painful hits kept coming as the final seconds wound down in Arizona's 64-63, Elite Eight overtime loss to the Wisconsin Badgers on Saturday. Yahoo! Sports' Marc J. Spears reports that forward Aaron Gordon will leave school after his freshman season and enter the 2014 NBA Draft. Barring a stunning change of mind, freshman Aaron Gordon has likely played his last game at Arizona and is headed to the NBA, sources said. — Marc J. Spears (@SpearsNBAYahoo) March 30,...

Pac-12 Baseball Power Rankings: The curious case of Stanford

No in-conference sweeps makes this week a little more difficult The Pac-12 had an interesting weekend, with none of the five conference series being swept.  Oregon was the only team to pull off an undefeated weekend, but they were playing at home against UC-Riverside. UCLA had the most disappointing week, losing the series at Arizona, and possibly losing their closer David Berg due to a bicep injury. Also surprising was Oregon State losing on a Friday.  That almost never happens.  Props to Washington State for pulling that off. Stanford is the most confusing of all the Pac-12 teams, with...

NBA Draft 2014: Aaron Gordon and Nick Johnson officially go pro

NBA Draft 2014: Aaron Gordon and Nick Johnson officially go pro

Arizona will lose Nick Johnson and Aaron Gordon, but Kaleb Tarczewski and Rondae Hollis-Jefferson are back. Nick Johnson will join Aaron Gordon in the 2014 NBA Draft, and the two Arizona Wildcats announced their intentions Tuesday at a press conference that was also used to announce the return of three other UA players. Brandon Ashley, Kaleb Tarczewski and Rondae Hollis-Jefferson return to give Arizona another shot at a deep NCAA Tournament run. Arizona's Kaleb Tarczewski just texted me: "I'm on a mission. 2015: Indianapolis." — Jeff Goodman (@GoodmanESPN) April 15, 2014 While Gordon's...

Arizona baseball: Three Up, Three Down: UCLA series victory

Arizona baseball: Three Up, Three Down: UCLA series victory

A strange weekend on the diamond resulted in a second-consecutive series win for Arizona The weekend started off poorly for the Arizona Wildcats, dropping the Friday game in embarrassing fashion by getting shutout and a horrible pitching performance.  But Saturday, things started to turn around with a 3-2 win, and Sunday topped it all off with the walk-off 6-5 series-clinching victory. Unfortunately, that Sunday game saw both teams lose their starting centerfielders, and UCLA also lost All-American closer David Berg.  Tough breaks on both sides no doubt, but gotta fight through it and...

Rondae Hollis-Jefferson joins Jewish Frat AEPi, not the NBA Draft

The freshman forward is joining a fraternity, so that means he's staying ... right? So Yeah, Rondae Hollis-Jefferson has apparently been sworn in to Alpha Epsilon Pi at the University of Arizona. And yes, that is the Jewish Fraternity AEPi. That commitment might mean he's staying at Arizona, which would be helpful for Sean Miller's team. @ZackBlatt Biggest question: will @RondaeHJ23 shimmy on Shabbat? — Jonathan Zoob (@JZoob) April 14, 2014

NBA Draft update: Nick Johnson leaning toward leaving Arizona

Reports by ESPN's Jeff Goodman indicate Nick Johnson is leaning toward joining Aaron Gordon in the NBA Draft. Arizona guard Nick Johnson is likely joining Aaron Gordon out the door, according to sources of ESPN's Jeff Goodman, who also reported that Rondae Hollis-Jefferson and Kaleb Tarczewski are likely to return to Arizona. Evaluations from an NBA Undergraduate Advisory Committee should be returned to all players interested in learning their draft prospects by today (here's Draft Express on the whole "testing the waters" process), so word should come down shortly about the final...

UCLA vs. Arizona: Wildcats win weird one to claim series victory over Bruins

UCLA vs. Arizona: Wildcats win weird one to claim series victory over Bruins

Name a weird thing that can happen during a baseball game, and it happened on Sunday. But Arizona prevailed in walkoff fashion For the first time since 2005, the Arizona Wildcats took a regular-season series from the UCLA Bruins after Kevin Newman hit a walk-off single to third base. "That was definitely a moment where definitely two deep breathes were in need." Newman had two strikes on him, and the pitch before had a check swing that the umpire ruled he didn't go around.  But Newman was already running towards first. "I personally thought I did go," the shortstop said afterwards.  "I...

UCLA vs. Arizona: Cody Hamlin goes the distance in 3-2 win over Bruins

Cody Hamlin has been something else the last few weeks, and he kept it going with a complete game victory over UCLA on Saturday The Arizona Wildcats returned to their winning ways on Saturday vs. UCLA with a 3-2 victory.  Cody Hamlin went all nine innings, allowing just five hits and one earned run on the night. "What an outstanding performance," head coach Andy Lopez said after the game.  "We needed it badly." Hamlin, who threw 111 pitches on the night, was pounding the strike zone all night. "It's just how I come out every game," Hamlin said.  "I'm just trying to be better than the...

Arizona football spring game: Offense dominates as expected

Fans got their first look at just how ridiculous these receivers really are It was mostly expected, but the offense performed much better than the defense in Saturday's Arizona Spring Game. The game gave most fans their first look at all the new faces on offense, and those faces certainly did not disappoint. Early in the game, Austin Hill got destroyed on a ball that Anu Solomon left him out to dry on. "That shouldn't have happened," Rich Rodriguez said afterwards.  "We told our guys it was live, but we didn't want any blow-up shots." Listen: Rich Rodriguez | Cayleb Jones | DaVonte'...

Arizona baseball: Another Friday night loss

Friday I'm not in love Everything was bad for Arizona on Friday against UCLA. Farris was bad. The offense was bad. The defensive positioning was bad. The defense itself was bad. Everything. Bad.  Just bad baseball. There was really no hope once UCLA scored their first run of the game in the third inning.  Only thrice did an Arizona runner even reach second base.  Never did an Arizona runner reach third. Time to make a change.  Do it now.

Arizona vs. ASU: Wildcats hang on for 10-9 win, even season series with Sun Devils

Four lead changes after the fifth, but Arizona held on for a big win It was long.  It was high-scoring.  And it was close the entire way.  But Arizona held on in the ninth for a 10-9 win over ASU, evening the season series at one game apiece. The Wildcats had that 10-9 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth, and freshman phenom Bobby Dalbec came on to close it out.  But RJ Ybarra started the inning off with a double off the top of the left-center wall, and then moved to third on a balk before Dalbec had even thrown a pitch to Jake Peevyhouse. The freshman responded to the pressure,...

Pac-12 Baseball Power Rankings: Huskies hold on to top spot

A walkoff win on Sunday will keep UW at the top of the Pac-12 Power Rankings Another week, another series win for the Washington Huskies, this time thanks to a walkoff double on Sunday against the Oregon Ducks. Oregon State swept Stanford last week, pushing the top two farther away from the rest of the field. Some changes in the middle of the rankings from last week thanks to those Washington and Oregon series, plus a weekend full of struggles for UCLA. Without further ado, here's how the Pac-12 Power Rankings shape up this week: 1. Washington Huskies (22-6-1, 10-2) Previous ranking:...

Grant Jerrett signed by Thunder for remainder of season

Former Arizona Wildcats forward Grant Jerrett finally signed a deal with the Oklahoma City Thunder after spending the year in the D-League. Grant Jerrett spent a year at Arizona, was drafted by the Oklahoma City Thunder with the 40th overall pick, never signed with the team and was picked No. 1 overall in the D-League draft by the Thunder's affiliate, the Tulsa 66ers, after they moved up the draft via trade. Doing it right An odd path is not only the right one, but a safe one for Grant Jerrett Jerrett made a head-scratching decision to leave the Wildcats after his freshman season,...

College basketball rankings: Arizona finishes 5th in Coaches poll

Sean Miller's Elite Eight run earned Arizona a No. 5 ranking to close out the year, but the Wildcats are getting favorable bit of respect looking to 2014-15. The Arizona Wildcats finished the 2013-14 season where they started. Sean Miller's team ends the year ranked fifth, the same ranking it received to start the year. The Wildcats finished its Elite Eight run behind national champion UConn, Kentucky, Florida and Wisconsin. UCLA and Stanford finished ranked in the top-25 of the coaches poll. But how about next year? Even without knowing the final decisions by Aaron Gordon and Nick...
