Arizona football: Jared Baker shows Wildcats have depth at running back

Arizona football: Jared Baker shows Wildcats have depth at running back

Arizona's going to need some depth at running back with six-straight games coming up. When Terris Jones-Grigsby went down after a vicious hit in the USC game, there were questions about who would be the next man up at running back for the Arizona Wildcats. Nick Wilson wasn't dressed, and we hadn't really seen any of the other backs since Week One. On the ensuing drive, Jared Baker found himself lined up in the slot at first, and then started lining up in the backfield. He went on to score three times for the Wildcats in the second half. "He was the second back behind Terris Jones-Grigsby,"...

College football rankings: Arizona inches up Coaches poll, passed by ASU

College football rankings: Arizona inches up Coaches poll, passed by ASU

Arizona slid two spots up the coaches poll from last week. The Arizona Wildcats moved up two spots during the bye week into the 15th spot in the Amway Coaches Poll, but they also shifted about in the Pac-12 hierarchy. Arizona State's win against previously-ranked Stanford pushed the Cardinal out of the rankings for the first time since 2009 and leapfrogged the Sun Devils to No. 14 in the rankings. Oregon sits at No. 7 and with ASU remains the other Pac-12 team ahead of Arizona in the national standings. The AP Poll should be released in a few hours. Check back here for more, and take a look...

Arizona Red-Blue scrimmage: Rondae Hollis-Jefferson, Stanley Johnson lead the way

The Red team took home the victory behind Stanley Johnson's 17 points. Two 12-minute halves gave way to the Red team's 53-46 win against the Blue team in Arizona's season tipoff scrimmage, but it's what happened more than the result that we'll talk about. But that comes with a warning: Remember, Sidiki Johnson once upon a time put together a stellar Red-Blue scrimmage. Matchup of the day Sean Miller said Kaleb Tarczewski may have become the Wildcats' best player this offseason. He and T.J. McConnell might be the two most important, though Stanley Johnson and Rondae Hollis-Jefferson have the...

Arizona basketball Red-Blue game: Time, TV and what to watch

Arizona basketball tips the 2014-15 season with a No. 2 ranking in the coaches poll. The Arizona Wildcats will fill a renovated McKale Center with a sold out crowd and big expectations for the annual Red-Blue scrimmage. Drake probably won't make an appearance, but on to the more important things. Time Live: 3 p.m. MST TV 7:30 p.m. MST on Pac-12 Networks (tape delay) What to watch Brandon Ashley's big return: Putting your money on who will receive the biggest ovation should be pretty easy. Ashley is apparently healthy and ready to go. The team has the same expectations as last year but...

Arizona football: Q&A with Wildcats punter and holder Drew Riggleman

I asked Drew Riggleman questions about special teams, and he answered them. What is the process of holding on a field goal? Drew Riggleman: So first, I count to make sure we have everybody on the line. Then I'll look down at my spot, look back at Casey (Skowron). When he gives me the nod, I'll look down and then signal for the snap. What did you see on Skowron's missed field goal at the end of the USC game? (Casey)'s form was a little bit off. Nothing really big. How do you evaluate Arizona's special teams as a whole so far this season? I think we're doing a lot better than we were...

Arizona football: David Richards still learning to be unselfish; going about his business quietly

David Richards is quiet off the field, but is starting to make more noise on the field Even in a loss to USC, the Arizona Wildcats put up some truly amazing stats in the passing game. One of those stats was that four different guys had seven catches each. Now, you would expect to see Cayleb Jones and Austin Hill as two of those guys. DaVonte' Neal had what could be a breakout game in what he says was his first game at full-health this year. The fourth guy though? David Richards. Richards, a redshirt junior, has sort of been replaced as the guy with size by Cayleb Jones, but that...

College basketball rankings: Arizona a preseason No. 2 behind Kentucky

College basketball rankings: Arizona a preseason No. 2 behind Kentucky

The Arizona basketball team is No. 2 behind Kentucky. Sean Miller's Arizona Wildcats will begin the 2014-15 season ranked No. 2 in the country by his fellow coaches, unsurprisingly behind a two-deep Kentucky Wildcats team. Arizona earned three first-place votes and 746 total points, while UK gathered 24 first-place votes and 785 points. Duke, Wisconsin and Kansas round out the top-5 schools. As for top-25 schools on the Wildcats' schedule next year, there's not much to work with. San Diego State, ranked 17th, could meet UA for another showdown, this time in the Maui Invitational....

Arizona football: Former UA back Nic Grigsby leaves CFL's Winnipeg Bombers

Wonder what happened to former UA running back Nic Grigsby? Some news out of the CFL has an answer. All the success this season from senior Arizona running back Terris Jones-Grigsby probably made you wonder: Where in the heck is his half brother, former starting UA back Nic Grigsby? Wednesday, we found out. It seems Grigsby was doing well considering all things. He was a member of the Canadian Football League's Winnipeg Bombers -- was being the key word there. Grigsby's name popped up on my Twitter feed because he was surprisingly released from the 6-9 team despite still leading the CFL in...

Arizona football: Anu Solomon added to Maxwell watch list, Scooby Wright added to Bednarik

The two Arizona football players are on two award watch lists for their respective positions. Arizona quarterback Anu Solomon has joined receiver Austin Hill on the Maxwell Award watch list for college football's best offensive player, while linebacker Scooby Wright has been added midseason to the Bednarik Award watch list given to the best defensive player. Solomon so far has accumulated 2,136 passing yards, 15 touchdowns and four interceptions. He has completed 62.6 percent of his passes also has added 160 yards on the ground. Wright perhaps has a more legitimate case to be in the...

Steve Kerr donates $1 million toward McKale Center renovation

The new Golden State Warriors coach is putting that new contract to use. Former Arizona Wildcats guard Steve Kerr recently signed a five-year, $25 million contract with the Golden State Warriors, and he's putting a good chunk of money to use by giving back to his alma mater. The athletic department announced Steve and wife Margot have donated $1 million that will go toward the McKale Center renovation project. From the school's official release: "We are really excited that Steve and Margot have decided to show this kind of support for Arizona Athletics," athletics director Greg Byrne said...

Coaches Association sends Ka'Deem Carey's All-American award to ASU

Ka'Deem Carey won many All-American honors, so we suppose it's inevitable one was sent to Arizona State. We will accept this award on behalf of @azathletics as it was sent to our office. #SorryKaDeem pic.twitter.com/skqnbMXJWE — Maggie Emmons (@MaggieEmmons) October 13, 2014 @MaggieEmmons Well, this is awkward. — Arizona Athletics (@AZATHLETICS) October 13, 2014 If there's one thing Wildcats and Sun Devils agree upon, it's that ASU and UofA are two different schools. Turns out ESPN isn't the only college sports entity that can't figure out which is which. This picture, tweeted...

Pac-12 Power Rankings: USC up, UCLA down

Pac-12 Power Rankings: USC up, UCLA down

Things are getting weird in Los Angeles. 1. Oregon Ducks -- : Maybe the Ducks are simply a bad matchup against Arizona. Oregon made gravy out of UCLA's defense until 20 points in the fourth quarter made the score more respectable. Or maybe the game said more about the Bruins. In any case, Mark Helfrich's team isn't in a freefall. Still a lot for the Ducks to play for. 2. Stanford Cardinal ↑↑ : Both the passing game and the running game were working against Wazzu in a 34-17 win. The Cardinal need confidence on the offensive side of the ball -- however that comes shouldn't be a worry. 3....

Arizona Diamondbacks name Chip Hale new manager

A former Wildcat great will now be managing the DBacks On Monday morning, the Arizona Diamondbacks officially named Chip Hale as their new manager after firing Kirk Gibson last month. Hale has quite the tie to the state of Arizona. From 1984-87, Hale starred at the University of Arizona, starting in all 255 games in his four years. That is the most games played by a single player in the history of the program. He's also Arizona's all-time leader in at bats (978), hits (337), walks (162), sac flies (21), and total bases (507). He's also second all-time in runs scored (246). During the 1986...

Arizona football: Bad read on two-point conversion by Anu Solomon one of many costly mistakes made by Wildcats against the Trojans

Arizona football: Bad read on two-point conversion by Anu Solomon one of many costly mistakes made by Wildcats against the Trojans

This would have tied the game late against a team without its starting kicker The Arizona Wildcats came roaring back against the USC Trojans Saturday night, but came up just two points shy of completing the rally and staying undefeated. A late drive that ended with Jared Baker's third touchdown of the night left the Wildcats down 28-26, forced to go for two. On the first attempt, Cayleb Jones had one-on-one coverage on the left side of the field, but was not on the same page as Anu Solomon with which route he was supposed to run. The throw soared over his head as Jones ran a slant...
