Arizona basketball: Ray Smith won't be cleared for full-contact drills until August

Don't call it a setback The Arizona Wildcats are eager to get Ray Smith — who is recovering from a torn ACL that forced him to miss his freshman season — back on the court, but they'll have to wait a bit longer before he's able to take on a full workload. Sean Miller told Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports that Smith won't be cleared for full-contract drills until August. Arizona's Ray Smith (ACL) will not be cleared for full-contact drills until August, Sean Miller told @CBSSports. — Jon Rothstein (@JonRothstein) July 20, 2016 ACL tears can take around 12 months to fully recover from...

Arizona football roundtable: Predicting the Wildcats’ 2016 record

How many wins will Arizona finish with this year? We’ve seen the predictions for the Arizona Wildcats to finish fourth or fifth in the Pac-12 South this year, but what exactly does that mean? What record do we expect Arizona to finish the season with? We dive into that in our second roundtable of the week: Gabe Encinas: I think 7-5 is pretty fair. I would go 3-0 through non-conference play, with a win against either Utah or Washington State. Then picking up wins against Colorado, Oregon State and Arizona State. I don’t totally buy into the Washington hype and I think playing the Huskies...

Florida Gators reportedly have Arizona’s Greg Byrne as their “first choice” for vacant athletic director position

Reports are coming in that Florida has its eyes set on Greg Byrne to be its new athletic director. Last month, University of Florida Athletic Director Jeremy Foley stepped down after 25 years as the athletic director and more than 40 years with the school. With that announcement came the understandable chatter that Arizona Athletic Director Greg Byrne would probably show up on Florida’s short list. I mean why wouldn’t he? He’s young (both in age and in the sense that he fully embraces technology), he’s charismatic (when have you not seen him interacting with the Arizona faithful at...

Arizona football: Another year, another quarterback competition

Just a typical summer in Tucson Editor's note: This is Drake Horner's first piece for the site. Please welcome him to the team! It’s Mid-July in Tucson, Arizona, and with that comes another year of Rich Rodriguez claiming that "nobody’s job is safe". It is like clockwork every summer. Anu Solomon is the clear favorite to win the Arizona Wildcats starting quarterback job, but he is going to have to work for it like any other year. Brandon Dawkins is the second option this year, and we all got to see what he can do against the Arizona State Sun Devils in 2015. Some people think...

Arizona football recruiting: Wildcats add versatility with JuCo linebacker Delshawn Phillips

Arizona scores with a versatile JuCo linebacker The Arizona Wildcats now have 24 commitments for the 2017 recruiting class, still a top 15 class according to all major recruiting services. The latest commitment for the class came by way of junior college prospect Delshawn Phillips, a 6-foot-2, 228 pound linebacker out of Garden City Community College (Garden City, Kansas). Originally from Detroit, Michigan, Phillips was a 2-star prospect out of Cass Techinical, a football powerhouse. He signed with Western Michigan on National Signing Day of 2014, but ended up at Garden City. He is now a...

Sonoran Hot Reads: Scott Kingery promoted to Double-A

The entire 2015 middle infield is now in Double-A With one half of the 2015 Arizona Wildcats middle infield thriving in Double-A, the other half joined Kevin Newman there on Monday. Scott Kingery received the call up, moving up to the Reading Fightin Phils. Kingery was in the leadoff spot in his first game at the Double-A level, but went 0-for-3 in a 1-0 win over Binghamton. On the bright side, he was greeted by a double rainbow. Reading plays Newman’s Altoona team next weekend RHP Robby Medel, pitching for @Conejo_Oaks this summer, hasn't allowed a run over his last 5 appearances, w/a...

Arizona football roundtable: Which position group is most concerning?

What about the Wildcats is most worrisome in 2016? Heading into the 2016 season, it’s probably safe to say that most fans are concerned about the Arizona Wildcats defense in general. But which position group are you most concerned about in 2016? We turn to our team of writers, and it’s a pretty unanimous pick. Gabe Encinas: It has to be the defensive line. Having a front of Sani Fuimaono, Parker Zellers and Luca Bruno full-time is a little frightening. While I had zero expectations of Anthony Fotu having an impact once he came back from his six game suspension, the depth there takes a...

Arizona football recruiting: Wildcats in great shape for Hunter Echols, two 2019 quarterbacks and Jaylon Johnson

A quick roundup to catch up on this week’s latest news There was a whirlwind of Arizona Wildcats recruiting news that took place this weekend, so now it’s time to get all caught up. Arizona is in contention to finish off their 2017 recruiting class with some of the most highly-talented recruits in the nation. I said in my last recruiting roundup that I don’t think it’s crazy to think that Arizona lands four top 100 recruits in this cycle. There are a few mentioned in this post, but for a quick run down on the remaining prospects and their status with Arizona, check out my last...

Sonoran Hot Reads: Arizona makes cuts for DJ Harvey, Brandon Randolph and Quade Green

A busy weekend of basketball recruits making lists and checking them twice It’s been a busy few days in the college basketball recruiting world, with tons of prospects putting out their "Top ____" lists. Well, the Arizona Wildcats found themselves on at least three of those over the weekend. U of A is among ten schools in the mix for DJ Harvey, one of twelve for Brandon Randolph, and one of thirteen for Quade Green. While it’s still super early in the process for a lot of these players, it’s obvious that Sean Miller is in very good position when putting together the 2017...

Ken Griffey Jr. tells fun story about Trey Griffey during Hall of Fame speech

Just stories about Trey beating up TVs with a baseball bat On Sunday afternoon, notable Arizona Wildcats parent and part-time photographer Ken Griffey Jr. was enshrined in the National Baseball Hall of Fame. During his enshrinement speech, The Kid dropped a fun story about his kid, Trey Griffey, a wide receiver at Arizona. You can watch the entire speech here, with the below story about Trey starting around the 7:50 mark. "Trey, you’re my little man. My partner in crime. One day sitting there on the couch, you took a bat and hit the TV, and your mom got mad at you and then got mad at me,...

Arizona football recruiting: Recapping a big weekend filled with unofficial visitors

A huge day of recruiting for Arizona It was a big weekend for Arizona football as they hosted over 20 recruits from across the country. Many were commits, but there were also a handful of uncommitted folks in attendance. I was not expecting the Arizona Wildcats to land any commitments this weekend. The list of visitors that I had didn't even have Troy Young or Delshawn Phillips on it, making Saturday a day of surprise commitments. This now pushes the Wildcats up to 24 commitments, which means Arizona definitely has a plan for the scholarship count. These commitments won't have a drastic...

Tucson Restaurant Tournament: Sweet Sixteen matchups, voting dates, results and more

Which establishments will make it to our Elite Eight? We’re now down to our Sweet Sixteen in the inaugural Tucson Restaurant Tournament, and no one-seeds have made it through the first two rounds. Voting in the second round got serious, as many matchups had over 20,000 votes, and a couple of games were actually decided by exactly one vote. Check out the full second round results here. The Sweet Sixteen will work much like the second round did. New voting will open at 6 AM and 6 PM each day this week, and voting for each one will be open for four full days. All voting will...

Arizona football recruiting: 2-star safety Troy Young verbally commits to Wildcats

Arizona lands a true OKG out of Alabama The Arizona Wildcats have landed their 23rd commitment of the 2017 recruiting class. Currently a top 15 class, Arizona has added 2-star safety Troy Young, who verbally committed to Rich Rodriguez' program on Saturday. This is a pretty shocking commitment, as he wasn't a guy I would have projected the Wildcats to land. He checks in at 6-foot-1 and 190 pounds out of Mobile Christian School (Mobile, AL), the same school as top 2018 defensive end Andres Fox, who Arizona is in great standing with. The timing of this commitment makes you think that he is...

Arizona basketball recruiting: Five-star PG Collin Sexton a high priority for the Wildcats

Collin’s older brother chats about the guard’s recruitment and what he likes about the U of A. In late February, Georgia guard Collin Sexton was the 111th ranked player on 247 Sports’ composite rankings. Now, he’s 18th. Furthermore, he is the second-rated point guard, and arguably the fastest rising player in the entire country. Sexton, who led the Nike EYBL league in scoring at just a tad over 30 points per game, recently made the Team USA U17 squad, both of which were among his five goals for the 2016-2017 season. Oh, and he also led the team to a Gold medal and was named...

Sonoran Hot Reads: Arizona offers 2019 QB David Baldwin

Looking way ahead for a signal caller in Tucson While people continue to speculate about what the Arizona Wildcats quarterback situation will look like in 2016, the coaching staff also has their eyes on who will be calling plays four-plus years from now. On Friday, 2019 dual-threat QB David Baldwin received a scholarship offer from Arizona, the fourth he’s received, and third from a Pac-12 school. Even though there aren’t really 2019 rankings out yet, this feels like a guy who could be pursued by a lot of schools eventually, and UA is in on him early - There are tons of high-profile...

Arizona football: Anthony Fotu no longer with Wildcats

Another potential blow to the Wildcats defensive line situation Heading into the 2016 season, we knew that Anthony Fotu would not see the field for the Arizona Wildcats in the first six games as he continued to serve a year-long suspension. Now it appears we won’t see Fotu at all, as some time this week, he was pulled from Arizona’s online roster: One of our writers Brandon Combs was the first to notice this development. Fotu, a junior college transfer out of Oakland, would have been a senior this year. In five games last season, he recorded four tackles, and had a very...
