Sonoran Hot Reads: BYU outselling Arizona for Glendale game

Maybe it won't feel like an Arizona home game in Glendale against BYU The Arizona Wildcats open the 2016 football season with a neutral site game against the BYU Cougars in Glendale at University of Phoenix Stadium. With the game being just two hours away from the University of Arizona, and many more hours than that away from BYU, you would think the Wildcats would be selling more tickets to this game. You would be wrong. Greg Byrne told a Utah radio station "Right now, BYU has sold more tickets that we have". I would be surprised by this, but I also witnessed Boise State outdraw Arizona at...

Arizona baseball recap: Wildcats win on Senior Night 8-3 over Abilene Christian

The perfect way to send out the seniors and close out the 2016 home schedule The Arizona Wildcats closed out their 2016 schedule in the best way possible on Wednesday night...by honoring their seven seniors and picking up an 8-3 win over Abilene Christian. It also gives the team their most wins since the 2012 National Championship year. The Wildcats are now 35-20 overall. "They turned this thing around overnight, so all the credit to them," head coach Jay Johnson said after the game. Arizona is now on a three-game winning streak heading into their final series of the year, which starts...

Arizona baseball: Nathan Bannister's senior year boosts his MLB Draft stock

From undrafted to Pac-12 standout in less than a year As the names were called out during the 2015 MLB Draft last June, plenty of draft-eligible Arizona Wildcats never heard their name announced. Nathan Bannister, even after sporting a sub-3.50 ERA for most of the 2015 season, was one of those Cats that were snubbed by every MLB team 40 times over. "It always stings a little bit when people don't draft you or if you don't get noticed," he explained. "But you just gotta restart, refocus, rededicate yourself to the game, and I think that's a really good job of what Jay (Johnson) and the...

Arizona basketball: Terrance Ferguson officially signs with Wildcats

Time to stop speculating about whether or not Ferguson will be in Tucson With the spring signing period having come and gone, it was unclear whether or not Terrance Ferguson would actually be a member of the 2016-17 Arizona Wildcats. Sean Miller put any speculation to rest on Wednesday by officially commenting on Ferguson. "Evidenced by me talking about him, he signed something," Miller explained. "We anticipate him being here and I really look forward to coaching him." Coach would not go into detail what the actual document Ferguson signed was, but by commenting on him, it is clear that...

Pac-12 Conference: Under Armour breaks the bank for UCLA with $280M apparel deal

UCLA's contract with Under Armour towers over the collegiate landscape. Earlier this week, the UCLA Bruins and Under Armour announced the most lucrative apparel contract in the history of collegiate athletics. The deal, $280 million over 15 years, tops Ohio State's Nike contract by $28M and Texas' Nike deal by $30M. The LA Times notes how it'll be broken down: UCLA will receive $15 million in cash up front, according to a person with knowledge of the agreement who was not authorized to speak publicly. The school will subsequently be paid approximately $11 million annually in rights and...

Sonoran Hot Reads: Pac-12 announces court storming fines, new football game times and more changes

Some changes that probably make Arizona coaches happy After the end-of-year meetings came to a close, the Pac-12 announced several changes. Two are extremely notable for Arizona Wildcats fans. They are the implementing of fines for schools after court/field stormings, and the change of football TV time slots. 7 PM time slots or later on Pac-12 Network will be moved up to possibly 2:30 or 6 PM. This doesn't get rid of late games though, since ESPN or FOX will still have a late game option. Also, schools will be fined $25k for a first-time court/field storming offense, $50k the second time,...

Arizona baseball recap: Wildcats crush Abilene Christian 12-1

Wildcat on Wildcat crime The Arizona Wildcats are finishing their 2016 home schedule with a couple of midweek games against the Abilene Christian Wildcats. The ACU (16-36, 8-21 Southland) version of the Cats is definitely the worst team Arizona has faced all year. Tuesday's game was never in doubt, as Arizona took a 12-1 decision. Kevin Ginkel got the start on the mound for Arizona. He certainly looked like the dominant pitcher he's been over the last month, allowing just three hits and one earned run in six innings of work. "Yeah Ginkel, he's shown to everyone that he's a dude," Ryan...

Arizona recruiting: Sergio Brown's unique background and personality drawing top baseball prospects to Wildcats

Recruiting is more important than ever in baseball, but Arizona has the right guy on their side "You gotta keep it fun. You gotta keep it light." Such is the life of Arizona Wildcats assistant baseball coach Sergio Brown. In addition to his duties of coaching first base during games, and working with the hitters and infielders during practice, Brown is the lead recruiter for Arizona's baseball program. Brown, a 44-year-old English major from Cal State Fullerton, is in his 15th year of being an assistant coach at the Division-1 level, and his first with Arizona. He was also a member of the...

Sonoran Hot Reads: Will Nick Wilson get 1,000 rushing yards in 2016?

Is a 1,000 yard rusher in Arizona's near future? After a season filled with injury, Nick Wilson's value to the Arizona Wildcats offense became even more obvious than it was before 2015. As we head into his junior year, injuries are still a major question, but there are also lofty goals for the talented running back. ESPN wondered if each Pac-12 team would have a 1,000 yard rusher this year, and Arizona is in "Good Shape". Their reasoning: As a true freshman, Nick Wilson had a monster season with 1,375 yards -- including 17 total touchdowns. His health likely determines Arizona's shot at a...

Arizona football recruiting: Greg Johnson actively recruiting for Wildcats

It's a good sign when a top 100 commit is swaying guys to Arizona The Arizona Wildcats are off to a rabid start in recruiting for the 2017 class, loaded up with nine commitments, floating within the top 25 of the national rankings. Among those nine commits, three are 4-star prospects according to 247Sports, all ranked within the top 260 overall. Arizona's top-ranked prospect, Greg Johnson, was the first big splash by this new defensive staff, committing back on March 1st to become the third member of the class, joining Rhett Rodriguez and Braxton Burmeister. The commitment of Johnson is...

Arizona baseball recap: Wildcats continue to sputter in 4-2 loss to Oregon

Where has all the offense gone? There's never a good time for a three-game losing streak, but the Arizona Wildcats have picked the worst of times to have one. Saturday afternoon was another instance of no offensive output, resulting in a 4-2 loss to the Oregon Ducks, sealing the series fate for both teams. The Cats are now 15-14 in conference, and are in danger of finishing the Pac-12 season .500 if they are to lose Sunday afternoon's contest against these very same Ducks. Saturday's game was a tale of two-run bursts from each side. Oregon executed a safety squeeze in the second off of JC...

NCAA Softball Tournament results: Arizona advances to Knoxville Regional Final

Domination by Danielle For the 26th time in the last 27 years, the Arizona Wildcats have advanced to a Regional Final through the winner's bracket. Arizona took down Regional host Tennessee by a score of 4-0 on Saturday. This time, it's all about Danielle O'Toole. O'Toole, who won a 2-0 decision against Ohio State earlier in the day, was setting down Tennessee Volunteers left and right, essentially throwing a perfect game after allowing a leadoff single, retiring the final 21 batters she faced. The Arizona offense would finally reward her for her efforts in the sixth. Ashleigh Hughes...

Arizona football recruiting: 2018 defensive end Andres Fox has Wildcats in top three after offer

Arizona is getting a huge lead on a top 2018 defensive end The Arizona Wildcats have been sending offers out left and right as we approach the summertime. While the coaching staff seeks out commitments for their 2017 class, they're also getting a jump start on the 2018 class. Calvin Magee has extended into Mobile, Alabama, home of Andres Fox, 2018 defensive end out of Mobile Christian. It's still extremely early in the 2018 recruiting class cycle, so Fox isn't ranked by any recruiting services yet, but that will change. His offer list includes Kentucky, NC State and West Virginia, while...

Sonoran Hot Reads: Arizona softball starts dancing...literally

Not quite actual game action, but still good stuff The Arizona Wildcats were supposed to start their quest for another Women's College World Series appearance on Friday. They did...sort of. The opening game against Ohio State started a little late, and was suspended in the third inning due to weather. But that didn't stop the Cats from having some fun. pic.twitter.com/H9By34gEbi — Arizona Softball (@UA_Softball) May 20, 2016 The more it rains, the more fun we have. pic.twitter.com/6FxQ4JCcq8 — Arizona Softball (@UA_Softball) May 20, 2016 Singing in the rain ...

Arizona baseball recap: Wildcats shutout by Oregon in series opener

Unable to plate a run to start the Oregon series. The Arizona Wildcats' Pac-12 Championship hopes likely came to an end on Friday night in Eugene. They were unable to score a run against the Oregon Ducks, falling 3-0 in the series opener. In a kind of surprising move, Arizona started Cameron Ming on the mound against Cole Irvin. But for Irvin, it wouldn't matter who was on the other side. Ming did what you would expect him to do against a lineup composed mostly of left-handed hitters. He only allowed one earned run and three hits in five innings of work to keep Arizona in the game. The...
