Duke 65, Georgia Tech 61

ACC Now | News & Observer — GREENSBORO - Duke senior guard Jon Scheyer shook off a poor shooting game to come off a baseline screen and fire in the biggest basket of the ACC tournament Sunday afternoon as the top-seeded Blue Devils held on to defeat Georgia Tech 65-61 at the Greensboro Coliseum. After No. 7 seed Georgia Tech scored nine straight points to cut the deficit to one, Scheyer took a pass from Nolan Smith on the right wing to sink a 3-pointer over Glen Rice with 18 seconds remaining. Scheyer had missed nine of his previous 12 field goal attempts before that shot. He finished with 16 points, as did backcourt pa...

Instant analysis: Thanks, Miami

ACC Now | News & Observer — GREENSBORO -- Duke can thank Miami for a very valuable object lesson in tournament play. So what’s there for Duke to thank Miami about after the 77-74 semifinal win? The Hurricanes’ first-half prowess gave Duke a chance to hone its halftime adjustments, and the Blue Devils showed some real aptitude for tweaking their system. The results were spectacular. Down three at the half after Mike...

Instant analysis: Hurricanes getting help

ACC Now | News & Observer — GREENSBORO -- With 295 pounds of Winston-Salem muscle pounding the glass, 12th-seeded Miami is still alive. Four years ago in Greensboro, Wake Forest went from last place to the ACC semifinals, but it’s hard to believe it could happen again, particularly given the Hurricanes didn’t win a road game in the league. Yet there they are, playing Duke in Saturday’s early semifinal. Redshirt freshman Reggie Johnson, a product of Winston-Salem Prep, pulled down 12 rebounds as the Hurricanes kept rolling with a 70-65 win over Virginia Tech. If no one saw this coming, maybe it’s because Miami’s be...

Duke 57, Virginia 46

ACC Now | News & Observer — GREENSBORO -- In rapid succession, Duke’s “big three” triumvirate of Nolan Smith, Kyle Singler and Jon Scheyer helped the top-seeded Blue Devils advance to the ACC semifinals on Friday afternoon. Thoughts of an upset had invigorated the Greensboro Coliseum when No. 9 seed Virginia trimmed top-seeded Duke’s 11-point lead to two with 6 minutes, 22 seconds remaining in the second half. But Smith tipped in a Singler miss, Scheyer cleverly shook free to make a 12-foot bank shot, and Singler added a putback of his own. The game was no longer in question, especially with Duke’s defense consistently ...

After slumping start, Scheyer lifts Duke

ACC Now | News & Observer — When Duke needed something, anything, to save itself from spending the weekend at home and leaving the ACC tournament minus its star attraction, Jon Scheyer returned. Until the final few minutes of Duke's hard-earned, 57-46 victory over Virginia today, Scheyer had spent the afternoon missing shots, shaking his head and appearing understandably frustrated. Going two-for-10 from the field in the first half will do that to a guy. When Virginia cut Duke’s lead to 46-44 with 6:18 remaining, a genuine wave of noise and nervousness entered the Greensboro Coliseum. As quickly as it did, though, t...

  • Defense, Jackson's 28 lift Bobcats to 6th straight win Charlotte Observer (By Rick Bonnell, rbonnell@charlotteobserver.com) ORLANDO, Fla. - It might take several years and a whole new team, but Theo Ratliff makes good on his debts. That's how Ratliff saw the Charlotte Bobcats' 96-89 victory over the Orlando Magic: A debt repaid to coach Larry Brown for seeing what he could be and dragging it out of him. That was with the Philadelphia 76ers, when Ratliff was struggling to evolve from a 7-foot athlete into a refined NBA center.
  • UNC, State earn NIT bids ACC Now | News & Observer North Carolina’s season will continue. So will N.C. State’s. Despite finishing a disappointing 16-16, the defending national champion Tar Heels earned a No. 4 seed in the NIT – and will host a game against William & Mary at 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday night. N.C. State earned a No. 6 seed, and will play at South Florida on 8 p.m. Tuesday.
