Buckeyes/Illini survive

Purdue Insider | Indianapolis Star — INDIANAPOLIS -- The top half of the Big Ten men's basketball tournament semifinals is set with No. 1 seed Ohio State winning on Evan Turner's bomb at the buzzer, and No. 5 seed Illinois hanging on for a 58-54 victory against No. 4 Wisconsin, which made 6 of 33 first-half shots. In typical Michigan fashion, the Wolverines took a 68-66 lead with 2.2 seconds remaining, then set up a defense that didn't contest the inbounds pass and allowed Turner to catch the ball in full stride moving in the direction of the basket. He hit a 37-footer, giving the Buckeyes a 69-68 victory. Tonight, No. 2 seed P...

Football recruiting: 2011 targets

Purdue Insider | Indianapolis Star — Does Westlake High School in Austin, Texas sound familar? It should because that's where the Boilermakers found Drew Brees many years ago. Purdue's coaching staff is looking at another quarterback from Westlake. His name is Preston Dewey. According to an espn.com article, Dewey "may have been the smoothest of the quarterbacks Saturday" at the Steve Clarkson Dreammaker Tour stop at SMU's Ford Field. The story says that Dewey "worked through the drills with calmness and confidence." Gerry Hamilton writes that the 6-2, 175-pound Dewey is patiently awaiting his first offer. "His game is all ab...

Purdue's quarterfinal foe set

Purdue Insider | Indianapolis Star — INDIANAPOLIS -- For the first time in the Big Ten men's basketball tournament's 13-year history, Purdue and Northwestern will play. At 6:31 Friday night, the No. 2 seed Boilermakers will play the No. 7 seed Wildcats, who rallied from a halftime deficit Thursday night to pull away from No. 10 seed Indiana, 73-58. While it has 20 victories, Northwestern is not playing as well right now as it was in January, when it beat the Boilermakers 72-64 in Evanston. But what the Wildcats had Thursday night was more than enough to beat an Indiana team that was simply awful during the final 20 minutes. No...

Purdue football: Quick hits

Purdue Insider | Indianapolis Star — Notes from a recent conversation with Purdue football coach Danny Hope. 1. The chances of QB Justin Siller returning to the program are: "Damn good," Hope said. Siller was dismissed from school in April, 2009, for a violation of university academic policy. He was given a three-semester sentence. "I'm holding a spot for him," Hope said. "He's in the driver's seat for that. He can do whatever he wants to do. He has options. I think his heart is with Purdue and we certainly hope he comes back. We're waiting to make sure he's squared away academically." Hope didn't rule out using Siller at qu...

  • Rice hires Greenspan as athletics director Indianapolis Star HOUSTON -- Rick Greenspan is the new athletics director at Rice. Greenspan, the former AD at Indiana, was introduced Friday. He replaces Chris Del Conte, who resigned in October to become the AD at TCU.
  • Pacers' Rush delivers another late push Indianapolis Star In a short span against Philadelphia earlier this week, Brandon Rush made three nice moves to the basket. Each time, however, he missed a layup, part of a 1-for-7 shooting performance in the quarter.
  • Forward-thinking Hoosiers would rather forget this season Indianapolis Star There are no fast-forward buttons in Indiana basketball coach Tom Crean's Bloomington office, although I'm pretty sure IU athletic director Fred Glass has looked far and wide for one. There is no way to suddenly make it 2012, no way to put a running clock on IU's massive and painful rebuilding program.
  • Bad habits return Indianapolis Star One of the reasons Indiana snapped its 11-game losing streak by beating Northwestern five days ago was that the Hoosiers attacked the basket and controlled the tempo.
  • IU knocked out in 1st round of Big Ten tournament Indianapolis Star Northwestern rallies to beat Hoosiers; Purdue will face Wildcats in grudge match
  • Ex-Colt Jackson signs with Eagles Indianapolis Star Marlin Jackson's comeback from a second season-ending knee injury will continue in Philadelphia. The Indianapolis Colts' 2005 first-round draft pick, who missed 21 regular-season games the past two years with knee injuries, signed a two-year contract with the Eagles on Wednesday reportedly worth $6 million.
