Big Ten football divisions: Winners/losers

Purdue Insider | Indianapolis Star — Now that we know how the new Big Ten is going to be shaped, who are the winners and losers? To recap, here are the divisions: Ohio State, Penn State, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana and Purdue. The other: Nebraska, Michigan, Iowa, Michigan State, Northwestern and Minnesota. WINNERS Fans No question, you benefit. Better matchups. Prime time games that ABC/ESPN/Big Ten Network will quickly jump to televise. Almost all of the rivalries were protected and that's a good thing for the ticket buyers. Ohio State Currently, there doesn't appear to be a strong challenger to the Buckeyes for the divis...

Hummel getting closer

Purdue Insider | Indianapolis Star — Robbie Hummel's Tuesday appointment with Dr. Donald Shelbourne revealed that the 6-8 forward's surgically repaired right knee is progressing on schedule, but the Boilermaker forward will have to wait a bit longer to be cleared for five-on-five pickup games. Hummel was cleared last week to take part in all facets of individual workouts except for five-on-five drills. Hummel said last week that when he met Tuesday with Shelbourne, he hoped to be cleared to participate in scrimmages. With the regular season still more than two months away -- Nov. 14 -- it makes sense for Hummel to work back i...

5 things from Danny Hope press conference

Purdue Insider | Indianapolis Star — Today was our first teleconference of the season where coach Danny Hope and selected players fielded questions from the media. Five things we learned: 1. First depth chart of the regular season is out. A couple of observations. The secondary No. 1's feature Charlton Williams and Josh Johnson at cornerbacks; Logan Link and Albert Evans at safeties. Others on the two-deep are freshman Ricardo Allen and Mike Eargle at cornerbacks and Chris Quinn and Max Charlot at the safety spots. Elsewhere, junior Chris Carlino is listed No. 2 at middle linebacker behind sophomore Dwayne Beckford. On the offe...

Sunday 8/29 football practice report

Purdue Insider | Indianapolis Star — It's officially game week. The Boilermakers had a short practice in shorts and shoulder pads. They'll have Monday off and resume workouts Tuesday in preparation for Notre Dame. -- Coach Danny Hope isn't ready to release a depth chart. Most are curious about who starts in the secondary since the Boilermakers had to replace four veterans. "We'll see what happens the next couple of days," he said. "We have a lot of guys that are going to play. Not a lot of guys that are going to the game but a lot of guys that are going to play in the game. That's exciting because more guys that are into it."...

Strange Big Ten basketball schedule

Purdue Insider | Indianapolis Star — If the Purdue men's basketball team doesn't get off to a good start in the 2010-11 Big Ten Conference season, the Boilermakers will have no one to blame but themselves. The league office released the Big Ten schedule Thursday afternoon, and it's obvious the TV networks dictated a bulk of the schedule, setting most the high-profile games for February and early March. Beginning with a Dec. 28 game at Michigan and concluding with a Jan. 19 home game against Penn State, Purdue's first six conference games are against opponents who had a collective 30-60 Big Ten record last season. To me, it's e...

Big Ten divisions taking shape

Purdue Insider | Indianapolis Star — Wisconsin athletic director Barry Alvarez told the Wisconsin State Journal one piece to the Big Ten division puzzle: Iowa and Wisconsin will be separated. Comments from Iowa athletic director Gary Barta indicate that the league is down to two models. "There's a scenario that shows a set-up like that, but again there are multiple scenarios," Barta told the Cedar Rapids Gazette. "Until the commissioner comes out and says, 'Here it is,' I'm going to stay pretty tight on the different scenarios because the more I try to break it down question-by-question, I'll start to get in a situation where I...

Quarterback shuffle?

Purdue Insider | Indianapolis Star — With the news that backup quarterback Caleb TerBush is academically ineligible for the 2010 season, I thought Justin Siller might get a shot at quarterback. Well, I was wrong about the former quarterback now receiver. He won't be considered for the No. 3 quarterback spot. Freshman Sean Robinson moves into that spot, according to coach Danny Hope. "Not right now because we have a No. 1 who is a really good player, a No. 2 that is a really good player and we have a talented No. 3," Hope said of Robert Marve, Rob Henry and Robinson. "(Siller) doesn't figure into the equation at all. He's still ...

  • Lynn Henning: Big Ten realignment has big-time flaws Detroit News You have to be patient with protests when the Big Ten does something radical.
