Video: Five newcomers to watch for USF

The Bulletin | St. Petersburg Times — So I've resorted to all the cliche telltale signs of modern-day journalists doing video for their blogs -- I've embraced the tiny little tripod, I'm using the little remote control, and (shame) I've lined myself up in some random corner of my house. Anyway, here's a look at five newcomers to watch in Saturday's opener against Stony Brook -- really could have done 10, but they want to keep these videos short, just so we don't destroy Youtube's servers and keep my kids from enjoying the Geico little-pig-goes-weeeee commercial over and over again.

Preseason done, ex-Bulls await final NFL cuts

The Bulletin | St. Petersburg Times — Time for one last roundup of former Bulls in NFL camps, with the preseason finishing Thursday night and all NFL teams making the big cut from 75 to 53 players by Saturday. That could claim a handful of USF alums -- receiver Taurus Johnson, cut by the Browns this past week, is hopeful of landing on an NFL practice squad next week. One more transaction -- former USF defensive end Jarriett Buie was among the cuts announced Friday by the UFL's Florida Tuskers, who still have Matt Grothe, J.R. Reed and Huey Whittaker in camp. Onto the NFL guys ... First, three USF ...

No. 1 on list of 10 questions: Did USF make right hire in Holtz?

Giddins slowed by blister; Marc suspended

Bulls Report | Tampa Tribune — By Phil Neary Tribune correspondent TAMPA— It’s not a tear or a sprain, but rather a blister on his foot that has kept redshirt freshman DE Ryne Giddins, listed as a second-teamer, out of the last two practices, coach Skip Holtz said after practice Wednesday. Giddins’ status for Saturday’s…

Giddins, Popek officially out for Stony Brook

The Bulletin | St. Petersburg Times — The Big East is now asking its schools to issue an NFL-style injury report on Thursday of each game week (or 48 hours before kickoff with non-Saturday games) and USF sent out its first Thursday, with news that defensive end Ryne Giddins will miss Saturday's opener against Stony Brook with a painful blister on his right foot. Giddins was on crutches Wednesday to keep his weight off the blister, so it's hardly a surprise. Nor is news that tackle Mark Popek will also miss the game as he recovers from a sprained knee -- it's reasonable to think both could play next week at Florida. Receivers A.J. ...

Men's soccer takes rare home loss to FGCU

The Bulletin | St. Petersburg Times — Fresh off an exhibition win against No. 1 Akron, USF men's soccer team stumbled in its regular-season opener Wednesday, falling 2-1 to Florida Gulf Coast University to end a 30-game home unbeaten streak. Here's the writeup from USF's official site, including a video interview with coach George Kiefer, and here's  the story from FGCU's site. Soccer America called it FGCU's "biggest win ever." Both FGCU goals came right after the Bulls had to play a man short due to a red card to Hasani Sinclair. The Bulls play Saturday at Doug Woolard's old school, Saint Louis, then return home t...

Video: Holtz says 'the hay's in the barn'

The Bulletin | St. Petersburg Times — Lots of fun in two minutes of video from Skip Holtz after Wednesday's practice. Sorry for the occasional gusts of wind -- they helped Wednesday afternoon, believe me -- but you do get the debut of another Holtzism -- "the hay's in the barn" -- and a steady parade of Bulls players walking past in the background.   Holtz is laidback enough that he'll talk to reporters briefly during practice -- he's giving me grief for wearing khakis to a hot afternoon practice Wednesday, and I explain that many days I'm working in an office before coming to practice, where shorts seem less appro...

Stony Brook WR Brevi injured, won't travel

The Bulletin | St. Petersburg Times — Former Armwood receiver Mat Brevi, a starter for Stony Brook, injured his knee in Wednesday's practice and will not be able to travel  with the Seawolves for a homecoming game of sorts in Saturday's USF opener at Raymond James Stadium. Brevi, whose 26 catches last season matched the most of any returning receiver, had 344 receiving yards and two touchdowns last season. Stony Brook's top receiver graduated, and another top receiver, Donald Porter, is now a starting cornerback. The Seawolves still have receiver Jordan Gush, who caught a team-best six touchdown catches last season. Brevi nea...

  • Butch Jones' UC era starts in Fresno Cincinnati Enquirer The UC Bearcats, who have won 18 straight regular-season games dating to 2008, are not likely to take Saturday' night's season opener for granted simply because Fresno State plays in the Western Athletic Conference, a non-BCS league, not after the way the Bulldogs pushed around the UC defense last year and nearly pulled off an upset in Cincinnati.
  • Panthers see red Pittsburgh Post-Gazette SALT LAKE CITY -- Dion Lewis needed only two words to summarize the Pitt Panthers' 27-24, overtime loss against Utah Thursday night before a hostile crowd of 45,730 of Rice-Eccles Stadium. "Missed opportunities," Lewis said quietly after the game.
