Could we be satisfied with an unlicensed college football video game?

Could we be satisfied with an unlicensed college football video game?

One company is banking on it. It’s been nearly five years since you could play as the Syracuse Orange in a new college football video game. That’s a crime, clearly, and one that has yet to be rectified by the powers that be (aka, an agreement between EA Sports and more importantly, the NCAA). However, there may be hope yet, if you’re buying into the idea behind the unlicensed “Gridiron Champions” game from Imackulate Gaming, due for release in 2020. With 126 teams and the ability to create-your-own brands, you can see where this is going. It won’t include mascot mode, sadly....
Can Syracuse avoid first 2-year streak without NFL Draft pick since 1949?

Can Syracuse avoid first 2-year streak without NFL Draft pick since 1949?

“Help us, Steve Ishmael. You’re (probably) our only hope.” Even keeping in mind the recent 15-year rough patch for Syracuse Orange football, the program’s managed to produce NFL players throughout its long history. However, that did get a little bit harder in recent seasons. After having at least one player selected every year from 1976 through 2007, Syracuse has been shut out three times in the last decade — 2008, 2015 and 2017. We could’ve been shut out back in 2016 as well, if not for (now New York Giants punter) Riley Dixon getting picked in the seventh round. So needless...
Syracuse football 2018 opponent preview: Wagner Seahawks

Syracuse football 2018 opponent preview: Wagner Seahawks

For the first time since 2013, Syracuse’s home opener is not in week one. SU also opened against Wagner that year. Spring practice is over with, which opens the floodgates to start talking about the Syracuse Orange’s actual football opponents for fall 2018. Maybe the rest of you aren’t as excited about this fact in April. But... I certainly am, so we’re doing it. SU faces another challenging schedule, so this is not going to be easy, even with an improved and/or healthier team. Still, we’re looking at the positives wherever possible. Today’s foe: Wagner Seahawks School: Wagner...
Elijah Hughes’s potential impact on Syracuse basketball

Elijah Hughes’s potential impact on Syracuse basketball

Don’t forget about the Orange’s dynamic transfer guard. With Tyus Battle’s recent decision to test the NBA Draft waters, the Syracuse Orange are now left with a possible questionmark in the backcourt — or are they? Once Geno Thorpe departed last year, Paschal Chukwu was the lone imported talent on the floor for SU last season. However, there was also a transfer sitting on the bench, waiting for the NCAA’s questionable rules to take its place—the forgotten player: Elijah Hughes. Hughes transferred from Eastern Carolina University, where he averaged 7.8 points, 2.3 rebounds, and...
Syracuse MLAX falls out of top 10 in one of two polls

Syracuse MLAX falls out of top 10 in one of two polls

Not the best news as we look ahead to the ACC Tournament. While the NCAA Tournament selection committee considered the Syracuse Orange men’s lacrosse team a top-10 team over the weekend, those rankings were also compiled prior to the results of Saturday’s contest. Syracuse fell to Navy, 13-12 at the buzzer, knocking them down to 7-5 on the year. That loss does have some repercussions in the polls, as you’d guess. SU fell from the top 10 in the Maverik media poll, dropping from ninth to 12th. However, the Orange maintained that distinction in the Nike/USILA rankings, falling three...
Riley Dixon returns to New York to stiff-arm defensive backs again (LINKS)

Riley Dixon returns to New York to stiff-arm defensive backs again (LINKS)

The former Orange punter was traded from the Broncos to the Giants. We all know former Heisman contender and Syracuse Orange punter Riley Dixon is great. But apparently the Denver Broncos didn’t get the memo. As we mentioned recently, Denver traded for Marquette King to replace the future NFL MVP. That could’ve meant Riley was a free agent, but instead, he’ll get to land on his feet in some familiar-ish territory. The Broncos traded Dixon to the New York Giants for a seventh-round pick, effectively making him the Big Blue starter barring other offseason (free agency/draft)...
SU looking to get ahead of slim 2019 QB recruiting class

SU looking to get ahead of slim 2019 QB recruiting class

Things get a little more difficult this year than most. The Syracuse Orange football program is always looking to get ahead of the recruiting cycle, given its place in the larger picture of the sport. When you’re in the middle of a rebuild, you’re not necessarily asking kids to buy into on-field results as much as potential early playing time and the promise of getting better (with their help). Upset wins over teams like Virginia Tech and Clemson clearly help show that progress is being made. But appealing to talented players early can help the Orange get set up to withstand a little...
More Syracuse Track records for Knight and Stoner

More Syracuse Track records for Knight and Stoner

The Orange’s top runners keep getting faster It was another outstanding weekend for the Syracuse Orange track and field teams. As we’ve said a lot over the last two years, both Justyn Knight and Paige Stoner led the way with new school records. Stoner took the victory in the 3000m steeplechase at the Virginia Challenge in a time of 9:57.20. She dropped over five seconds off her previous record and has a top-five time in the country in the event. If Paige is able to keep this up, she could become Syracuse’s 1st women’s distance runner to be a First Team All American in all three...
Tournament committee says Syracuse MLAX is top 10

Tournament committee says Syracuse MLAX is top 10

Or at least, they thought so before the Orange lost to Navy... Early on Saturday afternoon, the NCAA men’s lacrosse selection committee released its latest top 10 rankings -- a recent development across most college sports to try and build some hype leading up to the postseason. The Syracuse Orange were No. 4 in the previous rankings, but dropped to No. 7 this time around. Of course, this was also created before SU’s heart-breaking 13-12 loss to Navy at the Carrier Dome later on Saturday afternoon. As much as the one-goal loss won’t do Syracuse too many favors in the eyes of the...
Syracuse women’s lacrosse scores big 19-8 win over Louisville

Syracuse women’s lacrosse scores big 19-8 win over Louisville

Orange score 11 straight to blow past the Cardinals on Senior Day. The Syracuse Orange women’s lacrosse team went into the Louisville game with their backs literally against the wall. Sitting at 8-8, the No. 16/19 Orange needed a win to avoid going into ACC Tournament later this week below .500 and a mathematical elimination possibility for selection into the NCAA Tournament. SU took care of business on Sunday, and closed out the game with an 11-goal run to beat the Cardinals 19-8 on Senior Day in the Dome. Syracuse (9-8, 1-6 ACC) jumped out to a 6-3 lead about 13 minutes into the...
What are Tyus Battle’s chances to be a first round pick in the NBA?

What are Tyus Battle’s chances to be a first round pick in the NBA?

Several factors working for and against Tyus Battle as he tests the NBA Draft waters. Syracuse Orange guard Tyus Battle declared for the NBA Draft today, but won’t hire an agent. As long as he remains unrepresented, that means May 30 is the date we’ll know whether or not he’s back at SU. The NBA’s withdrawal deadline is June 11. However, because the NCAA is the NCAA, its deadline is earlier on May 30 (10 days after the NBA Draft combine wraps up). Battle joins 97 other NCAA players without representation who will potentially participate in the draft combine with the option to go...
Report: Tyus Battle declaring for NBA Draft, won’t hire agent

Report: Tyus Battle declaring for NBA Draft, won’t hire agent

To little surprise, the Syracuse sophomore is going to be testing the waters. Syracuse Orange basketball fans have been waiting on Tyus Battle’s decision for weeks now. And with a looming declaration deadline this weekend, we finally got our answer today — per a report from Jonathan Givony. Syracuse wing Tyus Battle, a projected first round pick on the latest ESPN mock draft, will declare for the 2018 NBA Draft without an agent, sources say.— Jonathan Givony (@DraftExpress) April 20, 2018 As stated there, Battle will declare for the 2018 NBA Draft without hiring an agent. This...
No Syracuse football coach has ever made a bowl game in year three

No Syracuse football coach has ever made a bowl game in year three

To make the postseason this year, Dino Babers must buck a long-standing trend at SU. As we enter year three of the Dino Babers era for Syracuse Orange football, we’re sitting in a familiar spot for the program. Progress is apparent, but we’re waiting on the wins to go with it. Injuries have been a subplot, and also a major source of frustration. While we weren’t always sure of the plan with previous coaches — even Doug Marrone surrounded his own steady hand with the uncertainty around the offensive scheme — Babers is a known entity in that regard. Win or lose, succeed or fail, we...
Dino Babers confident in Syracuse’s young linebackers

Dino Babers confident in Syracuse’s young linebackers

The Orange move on from three cornerstone linebackers to an experienced, but also inexperienced, group. SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Replacing your top three linebackers sounds difficult. Replacing two that may be headed to the NFL sounds even more difficult. Replacing those players, who also happen to be three of your top four leading tacklers? That sounds the most difficult. Syracuse Orange football coach Dino Babers wasn’t shy to note the departures of said players during the ACC coaches teleconference on Thursday. “I see youth,” Babers said. “I see guys making mistakes. I see a lot of...
Texas A&M grad transfer OT Koda Martin joins Syracuse football

Texas A&M grad transfer OT Koda Martin joins Syracuse football

SU has a few scholarships available, and offensive line depth is always helpful. With a few scholarships available, the Syracuse Orange football program has some leeway to add some bodies to the roster before the 2018 season starts. There are some positions we could use some experienced help at -- wide receiver, linebacker, safety, defensive tackle — and sure, I guess offensive line as well, just because it’s always worth adding more help there. We mention that last one because Syracuse officially made an O-line grad transfer addition late Thursday, in the form of former Texas A&M...
