Staring Down The Musket At...The Alabama Crimson Tide - Q&A With Roll Bama Roll

The editor/manager from the SBNation Alabama blog, Roll Bama Roll joins us this week. bammer, editor/manager from Roll 'Bama Roll, who also joined us for our podcast this week, was kind enough to answer some questions about the Tide. Let's get started, shall we? MKirchner12: You guys are obviously coming off of two straight losses to end the 2013 season, and that's basically uncharted territory for Alabama in recent years. What was the fanbase's reaction to that end of the year slide and how do you think the team responded to it in Spring and Fall camps? bammer: Our reaction? Well I didn't...

The Smoking Musket College Pick Em Gauntlet Is Back, Plus Staff Predictions For WVU vs Alabama

Our annual pick 'em game is back plus this year, you'll get to see the staff predictions each week. The Smoking Musket Pick Em Gauntlet is an online college pick em game where we will try to pick the winners of the weekly Big 12 contests plus Yahoo! editors' selected games (usually the games involving the top 25 teams). There are usually 20-30 games to pick each week and each correct pick is worth one point. The winner (excluding Musket staff) will be the person at the end of the regular season who has the most correct picks/points. Points are cumulative, so don't worry if you happen to...

West Virginia Mountaineers Football: Rifling Through Recruiting

A quick rundown of WVU's 2015 recruiting class as it currently stands. With the wait for the start of the season almost over, now is as good a time as any to quickly check in on WVU's recruiting efforts.  Though these young guys may not be playing in the upcoming games, they are the future cornerstones of our program and the success of the team could depend on who stays on board.  Luckily for the Mountaineers, they have the good problem of just needing to keep people on board rather than finding commits, as most of the spots in the class are already taken. Right now the WVU class of 2015...

West Virginia University Ties That Bind

Sometimes it's just a game or a season, but sometimes it's more than that. My father died on July 1st. This will be the first season of Mountaineer football since the birth of my fandom in 1980, as a 10-year old, where my father,  and his love for the state, the University, and the team, won't be a speaking part in the narrative of the Fall.  It is a hard concept for me to fathom.  Those of you who were close to your father and have lost him know of what I am writing.  There are no words. He was so disappointed in last season.  4-8 had him calling for Holgorsen's head.  The loss at...

2014 West Virginia Mountaineers Football Unit Previews: Running Backs

The 2014 West Virginia Mountaineers features another deep running back corps. In 2013, the Mountaineers running backs were a deep unit, lead by senior Charles Sims, who ran for 1,095 yards and 11 touchdowns. Even with the departure of Sims to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the third round of the NFL Draft, the West Virginia backfield, will be just as strong, if not stronger. The 2014 running backs corps will be lead by Dreamius Smith, who was second on the Mountaineers with 103 rushes for 494 yards and five touchdowns in 2013. Next on the depth chart is Wendell Smallwood, who had 39 rushes...

2014 Mountaineers Unit Preview: Defensive Line

The Mountaineers look to dial up the pressure on opposing quarterbacks this year. Last season, WVU allowed 33.3 points per game and gave up 455 yards per game.  Those numbers were good enough for 99th and 101st respectively in the country.  Most fans who were able to stomach each game of the season last year can probably remember the lack of pressure or ability to get off the field on 3rd down consistently as significant contributors to those abysmal numbers. Keith Patterson, the former WVU defensive coordinator, left for the warmer climates of Arizona to reunite with his old college...

2014 West Virginia Mountaineers Football Unit Preview: Quarterbacks

2014 West Virginia Mountaineers Football Unit Preview: Quarterbacks

Is the Mountaineer quarterback cup half empty or half full? Was last year an aberration or the new reality? The biggest position for WVU also has the biggest question marks and the way you answer them probably depends on how you see the world. What can be said about the Mountaineer quarterback position that hasn't been said a thousand times already? Unlike last year head coach Dana Holgorsen announced his starter early, thereby removing any suspense or reason for debate. And unlike last year we have a significant sample by which to judge the top two candidates. But most pointedly unlike...

2014 West Virginia Mountaineers Football Unit Preview: Secondary

2014 West Virginia Mountaineers Football Unit Preview: Secondary

The Mountaineer secondary has struggled on historic levels since arriving in the Big 12, but the 2014 season brings an optimism that the unit, led by Daryl Worley, can be one of the team's strengths. I don't know if there is a strong enough word to explain the degree to which the WVU secondary has struggled in their first two seasons in the Big 12 conference. There is no sugarcoating it. The unit was historically bad. Take your pick of most any game the past two seasons. In 2012: the 63 points given up in their debut in the Big 12 in a win against Baylor, the 49-14 loss at Texas Tech a...

WVU Football: Can Mountaineers Return To Relevance?

Dana Holgorsen made an interesting comment near the end of last season regarding the status of WVU football. Dana Holgorsen made an interesting comment near the end of last season regarding the status of WVU football.  The Mountaineers had just lost to lowly conference bottom feeder Kansas.  Holgorsen, in his press conference previewing the Iowa State matchup, answered questions in his typical manner. It was the week of Thanksgiving, so a reporter asked Holgorsen this last question: "What are you thankful for?" Holgorsen responded with the following statement: "I'm thankful for the...

2014 Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game: What Would A WVU Victory Over Alabama Mean?

Last week @Abpriddy outlined why Alabama is vulnerable, but what would the impact of a Mountaineer upset be? If the Mountaineers were to do the unthinkable and beat the Crimson Tide this week it would have immediate repercussions in Morgantown for the coaches, the rest of the season, recruiting and legacy. Let's take a look at what those repercussions would be. 1. Dana Holgorsen's Future in Morgantown I'm firmly in the camp that believes that unless WVU repeats its four win performance from 2014 Holgorsen likely has at least one more year following this one to right the ship. A win over the...

Why West Virginia Might Beat Alabama

Why West Virginia Might Beat Alabama

Dreams do come true. The Old Gold and Blue crowd sounds off one last time in approval. Emotions inside the Georgia Dome range from the tear-streaming, heart-wrenching extremes of euphoria and remorse. Clint Trickett can't believe it. He walks up behind the center Tyler Orlosky, but it is all muscle memory. Coach Holgorsen had prepared the victory formation as a motivational ploy during practice, but the Mountaineer quarterback did not realize how truly gorgeous the sight would be. The play clock goes black, but the game clock remains winding down. Trickett barks out the cadence. The ribbon...

Potential Affect Of Clint Trickett Injury For WVU Would Be Like Ohio State’s Braxton Miller

Potential Affect Of Clint Trickett Injury For WVU Would Be Like Ohio State’s Braxton Miller

After the season-ending injury by Ohio State's Braxton Miller, what should happen if Dana Holgorsen lost West Virginia starting quarterback Clint Trickett for the season this fall? Losing a starting quarterback, no matter the level of competition, could take a team from being a contender to one that will have to wait until next year to make a run at championship for their respective program. The Ohio State Buckeyes, No. 5 in the AP Top 25, have the task of remaining a contender ahead of them this season after losing their senior star quarterback, Braxton Miller, to a torn labrum in his...
