So, last night’s game didn’t exactly go as planned and our tournament run ends in the Sweet Sixteen this year. Of course, that means all the news today is pretty much the same from everyone. West Virginia Mountaineers Vs. Jacksonville Dolphins Preview: The Return Home

The Mountaineers return to Morgantown after 18 straight games on the road. OPENING THOUGHTS Okay, now that basketball season has come to an abrupt close (but not quick enough for Chris Webber), we here at the Smoking Musket will begin covering baseball as much as we can. This will include series/game previews as well as recaps and various stories from around the Big 12. Now that we have seen what Randy Mazey has done with this team as he has taken a Big East bottom feeder playing in Hawley Field (terrible place to watch a game by the way) to being on the brink of a Big 12 title and an NCAA...

West Virginia’s season ends with a 61-58 loss to Gonzaga in Sweet 16

West Virginia’s season ends with a 61-58 loss to Gonzaga in Sweet 16

Unable to generate a clean look on a final possession, the Mountaineers season will end in the Sweet 16. A back and forth affair all game saw big shots made by both teams until Gonzaga made its final three point attempt, while West Virginia did not. In the end, Gonzaga will advance to the Elite 8 and in the process, end the season for the Mountaineers. Gonzaga started the scoring and led for most of the first half. West Virginia was able to keep the game close and slowly chipped away at the Bulldog lead. Eventually, West Virginia would tie the game at 22 on a Tarik Philip free throw with...

Looking Back On Bob Huggins Sweet 16 Appearances with WVU

On the heels of West Virginia taking on the number one seed in the West Region, let’s look back on Bob Huggin’s Sweet Sixteen appearances with his alma mater. 2007-08 West Virginia earned an at-large bid as a number 7 seed in the West Region in Bob Huggin’s first year as head coach at his alma mater. As the 7-seed, WVU drew the Arizona Wildcats and defeated them 75-65. In the Round of 32, the Mountaineers drew the 2-seed Duke. Do you remember where you were that day? After West Virginia forward Joe Alexander led the seventh-seeded Mountaineers to an upset of second-seeded Duke in...

Maryland ends West Virginia’s season 83-56

The Mountaineers finish their season at 24-11. During her pregame speech to her team, Brenda Frese, discussed about how her Maryland Terrapins (32-2) will win only if and when they break their opponents spirit. For the Mountaineers (24-11), their spirit was broken right at the end of the second half. West Virginia came out hot to start the game with Tynice Martin leading the team to out score the Terps 16-12 in the first quarter. The wheels came of the car in the second quarter, as the Terps went on a 23-8 run which was concluded by Maryland’s Destiny Solcum hit a 75-footer as time...

West Virginia Mountaineers Vs. Maryland Terrapins Preview: NCAA Women’s Second Round

The Terps host the Mountaineers for a spot in the Sweet 16 OPENING THOUGHTS Now that we have the men in the Sweet 16, time to get the women in. It’s a great thing to think about, but after the way we played Elon, I’m concerned. For those of you who decided to embrace the Irish in you on Friday, here are the highlights from that game: It took a while for the Mountaineers to prepare an answer for Elon’s Shay Burnett. If they have problems, what are they going to do against Maryland? The Terps have only lost to UConn (by 6) and Ohio State (by 11). I don’t mean to be “that guy”,...

West Virginia Mountaineers Vs. Notre Dame Fighting Irish Preview: Season 108 Episode 36 - NCAA Second Round

Don’t let March Madness distract you from the fact that Notre Dame went 4-8 in 2016. OPENING THOUGHTS You know, maybe President Obama knew more then we thought he did... It was a crazy close game and the Nana Foulland/Kimbal Mackenzie really made Bob Huggins and the Mountaineers earn it. But we got that Lamont West dunk highlight and move on to the second round, so let’s call this a positive experience. Earlier today (Friday) the university re-published an article that John Antonik wrote back in February 2012 (our last season in the Big East) about our top seven wins against the Notre...

WVU Women’s Basketball Defeats Elon 85-72 in NCAA First Round

A fourth-quarter scoring burst finally gave the No. 6 seed Mountaineers the separation they needed to knock out the No. 11 seed Phoenix. March Madness fully injected itself into the 6-11 matchup in the Bridgeport Region on Friday. West Virginia and Elon traded baskets, leads and stops from start to finish, but the No.6 Mountaineers came out with a 75-62 victory in College Park, Maryland. A 10-0 run in the middle of the fourth quarter gave the Big 12 tournament champions the decisive advantage they needed. WVU will face host and No. 3 seed Maryland on Sunday. Tynice Martin was again stellar...

West Virginia Mountaineers Vs. Elon Phoenix Preview: NCAA Women’s First Round

The 6-seeded Mountaineers head to College Park to take on Elon on St. Patty’s Day. OPENING THOUGHTS Wow. What a run in the Big 12 Tournament by these girls! Tynice Martin is on fire and I think that the Mountaineers have the potential to go as far as the Elite Eight if this run can continue. I did a bracket on the Women’s Tournament Challenge, and here’s what I have: Elon. Maryland. Duke. No doubt that the Mountaineers can win those three games. Just not UConn. Ain’t nobody beating UConn, right? WHEN/WHERE Date: Friday, March 17th Tip-Off Time: 2:30 PM ET Where:...
