Virginia softball is off to a historic start in 2024

Photo courtesy of Virginia Athletics Add another program to the list of UVA spring sports to be excited about. Carla Williams and the Virginia Cavaliers athletic administration have made a clear investment into the rapidly rising sport of softball. Over the past five years, UVA opened Palmer Park and added an indoor player development center, team lounge, training room, and press box in that same complex. The on-field results have followed. In 2022, head coach Joanna Hardin led the ‘Hoos to their first winning season in a decade. She followed that up with another...

Yes, An NIT Banner Needs To Be Raised

Yes, An NIT Banner Needs To Be Raised

Dale Zanine-USA TODAY Sports Georgia is a football school. There is absolutely no denying that fact, and what happens from August to January is the thermostat of how things are felt about around the Classic City year-round. Sure, you want to win in everything. But some sports at UGA are not at the level of where Kirby Smart has things. One hurdle some sports face is tradition - or lack of. Men’s basketball falls into that category. The greatest moment in program history rolled across its anniversary spot this week. That occasion was not even a championship. Rather,...

‘We’re everyday guys’: Underwood details Sweet 16 mindset

TCR // Jack Jungmann The Illini are looking to capitalize on their first second weekend game since 2005. The time has come. Tonight, for the first time in 19 years, the Illini will be playing in the Sweet Sixteen. The excitement is building and this team has all the potential in the world. But carrying this run on to the next round will be far from an easy task. Standing in the way of an Elite Eight matchup is No. 2 seed Iowa State. The success of this team is built off hustle, athleticism, and not allowing opponents to score many points. “Now it’s on to a very good...

Thursday Headlines: Pat Kelsey to Louisville Edition

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports Louisville has their guy. After a long coaching search that saw more than its fair share of twists and turns, Louisville Basketball has its next coach. Pat Kelsey is set to become the next head coach of the Cardinals program. This coaching search did not go quite like anyone expected. Scott Drew was thought to be the first realistic option, then Dusty May, and at one point, even Richard Pitino was thought to be the favorite with plenty of other names in-between, but ultimately, Kelsey is set to be the next coach of the Cardinals. Kelsey has...

Shotblocking has been around since the 1950’s when Bill Russell imagined a new way to defend. Before he revolutionized the sport, players were told not to leave their feet on defense. Russell was a superb shot blocker. Typically he would tip a shot then control it and...

'A great basketball year': UNLV bows out in NIT loss to Seton Hall

UNLV’s season came to an end on Wednesday with a 91-68 loss at Seton Hall. It was a blowout from start to finish, which one might assume would put a damper on the campaign. But that wasn’t the case for Kevin Kruger’s squad, which advanced to the postseason for the first time in 11 years before finally running out of gas in the quarterfinals of the NIT ...

ASU Hockey: Former Sun Devil Josh Doan scores twice in NHL debut

Photo by Norm Hall/NHLI via Former ASU forward Josh Doan writes storybook beginning to career A more perfect script could not have been written Tuesday night in Mullett Arena as former Arizona State forward Josh Doan scored twice in his NHL debut with the Arizona Coyotes in the arena where he so comfortably blossomed. Son of Coyotes’ all-time leading goal scorer, Shane Doan, Josh was destined for hockey in the desert. His playing days for the Jr. Coyotes of the Coyotes Hockey Association prepped him for an inevitable calling from them years later when the Coyotes...

Arizona’s depth, and that depth’s dependability, is central to its Final Four chances

Photo by Christian Petersen/ Don’t you just love when a plan comes together? Around this time a year ago, Tommy Lloyd and his staff set out to rebuild an Arizona program that was lacking something. Not wins, of course, as it had piled up plenty in the previous season, albeit with a caveat: None came in the NCAA tournament. Arizona’s first-round exit at the hands of Princeton was as illuminating as it was upsetting. It was not as if the 15th-seeded Tigers had played out of their mind. There was no barrage of 3-pointers and no ref-fueled parade to the free throw line....
