RG Alex Boone will not report to 49ers training camp, as expected.

Baalke mum on holdout Boone, praises RG’s potential replacement

Niners general manager Trent Baalke said the same thing Jim Harbaugh did about the contract holdout of right guard Alex Boone: nothing.

Baalke meets the press: won’t discuss Boone’s holdout, expects Aldon Smith discipline soon, likes ‘odds’ for success

General manager Trent Baalke didn’t drop any bombshells in a 45-minute, impromptu press conference but did cover a slew of topics. Here’s a quick breakdown of them: – On guard Alex Boone’s holdout: Baalke would not discuss the status of… Continue Reading →

How will the 49ers handle a changing of the guard?

If Alex Boone doesn’t get a new contract from the San Francisco 49ers, we may very well see a new starting right guard this season. Who are the likely candidates? Training camp is underway and incumbent right guard Alex Boone is still nowhere to be found.  Unlike fellow holdout Vernon Davis, who returned to the team on Wednesday, Boone remains resolute in getting a new deal.  With his immediate future with the team unclear, it's time to explore the most likely candidates to replace him. I feel obligated to at least mention Daniel Kilgore in this conversation since he was drafted as a...

Boone lacks leverage in his holdout

This is my Thursday column on Alex Boone. SANTA CLARA – Alex Boone is making a big mistake. Boone is the only 49er holding out of training camp. The 27-year-old guard wants a new contract. You can understand why. He signed his current deal at the end of the 2011 season when he was a […]

Alex Boone placed on Reserve/Did Not Report list: Roster, fines, salary cap implications

The San Francisco 49ers placed Alex Boone on the Reserve/Did Not Report list. There are several implications with that move, including fines, roster decisions, and of course the salary cap. The San Francisco 49ers welcomed back their veterans on Wednesday, and while Vernon Davis reported to camp, Alex Boone continues to hold out in hopes of a new contract. The 49ers made his holdout official on Wednesday. The Wednesday NFL transaction report came out late Wednesday, and the 49ers officially moved Boone to the Reserve/Did Not Report list. There are several implications that come with placing...

49ers have battle at right guard ... until Boone comes in from the cold

We continue to examine the 49ers’ most intriguing training-camp battles today with a look at what has been one of the most stable spots in recent years, the offensive line. If Alex Boone’s holdout continues as expected, Joe Looney is the frontrunner to replace him at right guard.

Vernon Davis and Alex Boone — a way their expected holdouts could end

Two days before the 49ers full squad reports, the fates of tight end Vernon Davis and guard Alex Boone remain undetermined. Both are expected to hold out. As has already been mentioned, the 6-8, 300-pound Boone has drastically out-played his contract. If he realizes his $200,000 roster bonus, he will make $2.2 million this year, less than half what he should be making. How can the 49ers resolve their contract differences with Vernon Davis? (AP Photo/Jeff Chiu) The issue with Boone is re-doing his deal without impacting the team’s salary cap. The 49ers are only $5.9 million under the cap,...

Staley won’t compare his contract pursuit to those of Boone, Davis

Well aware that tight end Vernon Davis and guard Alex Boone also want new deals, left tackle Joe Staley declined to compare his situation to theirs, especially in terms of him showing up throughout offseason workouts while Boone and Davis… Continue Reading →

Thoughts on Alex Boone as training camp holdout looms

Thoughts on Alex Boone as training camp holdout looms

Of the 49ers' two potential training-camp holdouts, one has a stronger argument than the other. Whereas Vernon Davis currently is the fourth highest-paid tight end in the NFL, you'd have to drop far down the list of starting guards to find Alex Boone's name. Alex Boone promises to turn his spring holdout into a summer holdout when the 49ers veterans report for training camp one week from today.

Are Vernon Davis and Alex Boone looking at Frank Gore type hold outs?

Word out of each camp is that Vernon Davis and Alex Boone will not be in Santa Clara when the 49ers start training camp. What does all of this mean? Saturday morning, Matt Maiocco tweeted that Alex Boone was not expected to report to training camp without a new contract. A day later, Pro Football Talk reported that "at the present time", Vernon Davis was also not expected to report on time. A source with knowledge of the situation tells PFT that, at the present time, Davis would not be reporting.  That doesn't mean he won't show; with nine days to go, Davis can change his mind and...

Alex Boone holding out for new contract

Alex Boone holding out for new contract

The San Francisco 49ers might have an unhappy camper. OG Alex Boone is reportedly not pleased with his current contract and may skip all of the voluntary OTAs. The San Francisco 49ers open OTAs today, and we already have our first piece of noteworthy news. ESPN's Bill Williamson was the first to report (followed up by Matt Barrows) that offensive lineman Alex Boone is skipping the team's voluntary OTAs. They both said Boone is not happy with his contract situation. OTAs are voluntary, so we'll see where this proceeds when the team's mandatory minicamp kicks off on June 17. That is the...
