The Chiefs have done the Jimmy Garoppolo thing before, it didn’t work out

The Chiefs have done the Jimmy Garoppolo thing before, it didn’t work out

It’s the offseason so eventually we’ll throw out every scenario imaginable for the Kansas City Chiefs, especially as it relates to the quarterback. We’ve gone from keeping Alex Smith to signing Cowboys QB Tony Romo to drafting a top quarterback. Here’s a new one: Patriots QB Jimmy Garoppolo. “There’s a growing sense among NFL executives that Kansas City may be willing to move on from quarterback Alex Smith if the Chiefs are able to get Tony Romo or even get into the market for Jimmy Garoppolo,” Bleacher Report’s Jason Cole said in a video on Twitter. Read that again ......

Chiefs still listed high on Tony Romo odds

Chiefs still listed high on Tony Romo odds

I didn’t have a Tony Romo post for today and because I just loooove annoying you with Tony Romo posts I had to track one down. Bovada emailed me these odds regarding next year’s quarterbacks, specifically where Tony Romo, Jimmy Garoppolo, Jay Cutler and Tyrod Taylor will play next year. I’m a little surprised to see the Chiefs still listed so high on Romo. Clearly, not everyone believes the Chiefs are all in on Alex Smith. There’s apparently just enough wiggle room that the Chiefs are the team with the second highest odds here. I hate to say it but I think Denver makes a lot of...

I’ll still take Alex Smith over Jay Cutler all day

I’ll still take Alex Smith over Jay Cutler all day

The Chicago Bears have reportedly made Jay Cutler available in a trade. ESPN’s Jeff Darlington reports: Teams around the league are now aware of Cutler's availability while the Bears attempt to garner draft compensation for their eight-year starter, and conversations are expected to heat up during next week's NFL scouting combine. There was at one point, I’m sure, a debate over Alex Smith and Jay Cutler. I hope history remembers that I was on the side of Alex Smith, who is a better quarterback than Jay Cutler. Cutler has started all 16 games just three times in his career. In those...

Arrowheadlines: Chiefs salary cap questions, 2016 NFL draft redo is good for KC

Agent's Take: How the Jets, Chiefs and Cowboys can navigate cap crunch | CBSSports.com Andy Reid recently reiterating his confidence in Alex Smith hasn’t stopped speculation that he’ll be out of a job because of Tony Romo. Should the Chiefs change plans, $9.7 million of cap room will be gained by walking away from Smith’s $16.9 million cap number and next season’s unguaranteed $13.3 million salary. A short-term Romo deal could be easily structured with a 2017 cap number significantly less than Smith’s cap savings. Chiefs: Could they turn Jamaal Charles into Tony Romo? |...

“Growing Sense” That Chiefs May Be Willing To Move On From Alex Smith

Jason Cole of B/R reports that there’s a “growing sense” that the Chiefs may be willing to move on from veteran QB Alex Smith this offseason if they can either sign Tony Romo as a free agent or get into the trade market for Patriots backup QB Jimmy Garoppolo. According to Cole, there’s a feeling … The post “Growing Sense” That Chiefs May Be Willing To Move On From Alex Smith appeared first on NFLTradeRumors.co.

Does winning make Alex Smith a good quarterback?

Does winning make Alex Smith a good quarterback?

I’m assuming you’ve been handed the information in the table below on several occasions. Alex Smith has the fourth most wins of NFL starting quarterbacks in the last three seasons. From this many may state the following: Alex Smith is a good quarterback. He is a good quarterback because he wins. The assumption is that Alex Smith is a good quarterback because he wins football games. Is it true that all winning quarterbacks are good quarterbacks? We’ve gone over this time and time again. We’ve seen the stats shoved in our faces countless times. But none of these numbers actually...

Are the Kansas City Chiefs in win-now mode?

Are the Kansas City Chiefs in win-now mode?

I posted a story wondering if Tyler Bray was ready to be the Chiefs No. 2 behind Alex Smith and someone suggested to me in response that they need a veteran back there because the Chiefs are in win-now mode. I won’t argue the value of a veteran back there but I wondered if the Chiefs are really in win-now mode. Are they? I look at the quarterback and the fact that they have this playoff window and windows aren’t forever and you say they’re in win-now mode. But the Chiefs are also a young team. They have a lot of depth. John Dorsey has killed the draft the last couple of years and I...

Chiefs, Tony Romo chatter continues

Chiefs, Tony Romo chatter continues

Though he didn’t comment directly when I asked him about Tony Romo, Kansas City Chiefs GM John Dorsey left reporters in a conference call last week with the idea that Alex Smith and not Romo will be their starting quarterback next season. Andy Reid said it was a good bet that Alex would be their guy (as long as he doesn’t get attacked by a shark). Despite all that, the chatter about Romo and the Chiefs continues. I do agree, as Peter King explains here, that the Texans and Chiefs make the most sense for Romo because they’re good teams without the clear-cut franchise quarterback of...

Arrowheadlines: Tony Romo talk won’t stop, NFL Draft re-do

Tony Romo and the quarterback dominoes | The MMQB In Kansas City, Andy Reid has seen the ceiling of Alex Smith, and it is nice. Nice, as in final eight of the NFL … not as is final two. Reid has never minded upsetting the apple cart for a potentially special player. Romo would be that. Smith is mature enough to take this, to understand the addition of Romo would be good for the team. Smith wouldn’t pout. He’d be a team guy. That’s why the Chiefs make sense too. Texans and Chiefs could be favorites for Tony Romo | Pro Football Talk While other teams (specifically the Broncos) have...

Is Tyler Bray ready to be the Chiefs No. 2?

Is Tyler Bray ready to be the Chiefs No. 2?

You saw the news this week that the Kansas City Chiefs are likely to pass on Nick Foles’ option making him a free agent in March. That would mean behind Alex Smith the Chiefs have only Tyler Bray and Joel Stave heading into 2017. Stave was a late add to the practice squad so they really only have Bray as a viable option to back up Alex Smith next season. Is Bray ready to be the No. 2? The answer that I have and that everyone should have: I have no idea. Bray has been in the system for four years so I feel better about his chances than Stave but we still have no idea what Bray brings. He...

Chiefs’ Andy Reid on Alex Smith and shark attacks, Jamaal Charles’ future, play calling

Chiefs’ Andy Reid on Alex Smith and shark attacks, Jamaal Charles’ future, play calling

KC Chiefs coach Andy Reid joined Soren Petro on The Program last Friday. I wasn’t able to catch the entire interview until this morning and took some notes on what Reid had to say. Here we go .... Is Alex Smith the Chiefs quarterback next year: Yes. Now, he trains over in Hawaii and he goes down and grabs boulders off the bottom of the ocean. So there are sharks in the ocean (laughs) ... if I was a betting man, I would bet he’ll probably be our starting quarterback next year. On his contract extension: I’m old in this business. I’ve been doing it a couple years. Where other people...

Chiefs’ Andy Reid says Alex Smith is his QB (again)

I like yes or no answers. Some people will talk and then at the end you’re not really sure what they said. Not so with this yes or no questions. Take this one for Andy Reid who joined Soren Petro on The Program today: “Alex Smith is your quarterback next year, yes or no?”“Yes.”#reid— Soren Petro (@SorenPetro) February 10, 2017 I say that actions matter more than words with these NFL people but the words are pretty clear here. Chiefs GM John Dorsey said similar things on Thursday but without the clarity of a simple yes or no. There’s so much that would have to happen with...
