Jets release LB A.J. Edds, sign cornerback

With a glut of linebackers on the 53-man roster, the New York Jets released A.J. Edds, the team announced Tuesday. Edds played in four games, but didn't see any time on defense. He was used exclusively on special teams, including 21 snaps in Sunday's loss to the Buffalo Bills. The depth chart at linebacker had grown to 10 players, with the return of Antwan Barnes two weeks ago. Rookie Trevor Reilly, out the last two games with a knee injury, could be ready to return this week.

Rex Ryan tweaks Tom Brady for his flop

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- That Tom Brady, he's some actor. Rex Ryan called out the New England Patriots' quarterback for a flop in last week's game, an attempt by Brady to draw a penalty flag. It happened after an overthrow by the New York Jets' sideline. Linebacker Antwan Barnes gave Brady a shove out of bounds, and that didn't sit well with Patriots' guard Jordan Devey, who pushed Barnes to the ground and was penalized 15 yards. Amid the chaos, defensive end Leger Douzable made incidental contact with Brady, who paused a moment or two and fell down.

Former No. 1 pick Quinton Coples demoted to bit role

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- Outside linebacker Quinton Coples, whose playing time began to shrink last week, was dropped from the starting lineup and played only a handful of snaps in the New York Jets' 27-25 loss to the New England Patriots Thursday night at Gillette Stadium. Coples, a first-round pick in 2012, was replaced by graybeard Jason Babin at the "rush" linebacker spot. The Jets rotated three outside linebackers -- Babin, Calvin Pace and Antwan Barnes, who made his 2014 debut after being activated Wednesday from the PUP list.

Pass-rusher Antwan Barnes active for Jets

FOXBOROUGH, MASS. -- Outside linebacker Antwan Barnes, activated Wednesday from the physically-unable-to-perform list, will make his season debut Thursday night for the New York Jets, who face the New England Patriots at Gillette Stadium. It will mark Barnes' first action since last Oct. 7. That night, he suffered a major knee injury and underwent season-ending surgery. The Jets would've preferred to wait another week before dressing Barnes -- he's had only one week of practice -- but they had an opening at linebacker with rookie Trevor Reilly (sprained knee) out of the lineup.

Antwan Barnes comes off PUP; Josh Bush released

The New York Jets activated linebacker Antwan Barnes from the physically unable to perform list Wednesday as the team prepares to head to New England for a Thursday night game. Barnes initially sustained the knee injury last season and was placed on the IR on Oct. 9, 2013. "Obviously, [we've] got to get him in [shape]," Jets coach Rex Ryan said. "He might be in shape, but trying to get him in football shape and stuff like that. So, we'll see." Meanwhile, the Jets released injured safety Josh Bush.
